Report: Wisconsin basketball adding Sun Belt opponent to 2024-25 schedule

Wisconsin basketball is adding a contest against Appalachian State to its 2024-25 nonconference schedule, according to CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein.

The game is reportedly scheduled for Nov. 10 at the Kohl Center.

The Mountaineers will enter the upcoming season after a 27-7 2023-24 campaign. The team finished last year ranked No. 83 overall in KenPom and No. 2 in the Sun Belt Conference, ranked behind only James Madison — who defeated Wisconsin in the NCAA Tournament.

The contest will serve as an early test for Greg Gard’s team as it works to gel after a busy offseason of turnover.

Wisconsin’s 2024-25 nonconference schedule also includes a Nov. 15 home matchup against top-ranked Arizona, the Greenbrier Tip-Off with UCF, Pittsburgh and LSU, a Dec. 7 road matchup with rival Marquette and a Dec. 14 neutral site contest against Butler.

That gauntlet then leads into a challenging conference landscape that now also includes former Pac-12 powers USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington.

The Badgers’ 2024-25 schedule again guarantees to be one of the toughest in the nation after KenPom ranked its 2023-24 slate No. 3 overall.

Wisconsin basketball officially announces nonconference game vs. Butler

Wisconsin basketball officially announced its 2024-25 nonconference contest against Butler on Thursday.

The game will take place on Dec. 14 at a neutral site — Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana, home of the Indiana Pacers.

This matchup, which was initially reported by CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein back in May, adds another difficult matchup to what is an already challenging nonconference schedule for the Badgers.

The team hosts top-ranked Arizona on Nov. 15, faces UCF and either LSU or Pittsburgh in the Greenbrier Tip-Off, visits rival Marquette and now will also meet Butler. That is all before a Big Ten schedule that now includes conference newcomers UCLA, USC, Oregon and Washington.

Wisconsin is sure to again have one of the toughest schedules in the sport as the Big Ten and college basketball’s new landscape comes into focus.

The Butler program that Wisconsin will tip off against is fresh off an 18-15 2023-24 season. The Bulldogs have not made the NCAA Tournament since the 2017-18 season. Former Ohio State head coach Thad Matta appears to have the program trending in the right direction after its first winning season in four years.

This will be the 32nd all-time meeting between the two programs. Wisconsin leads the all-time series 17-14.

Wisconsin men’s hockey releases 2024-25 non-conference schedule

Wisconsin’s men’s hockey program released its 2024-25 non-conference schedule on Wednesday.

Following an exhibition match in Nebraska against the Omaha Mavericks on Oct. 5, the Badgers will welcome the Lindenwood Lions to the Kohl Center for their 2024-25 home opener.

Wisconsin will play two games against Lindenwood on Oct. 11 and Oct. 12 before matching up with the defending NCAA champion Denver Pioneers on Oct. 25-26. This will mark the first non-conference road series for Mike Hastings’ squad this coming season.

About a month later, UW will return home to host Alaska Anchorage on Nov. 29-30, preceding their participation at the Kwik Trip Holiday Face-Off in Milwaukee on the final weekend of December.

There, the Badgers will face Ferris State on Dec. 28 before playing either UConn or Alaska in a championship scenario or third-place game on Dec. 29. Those matches are schedule to be played just down the road at Fiserv Forum.

Finally, UW will complete its non-conference schedule against Brookfield, New York’s LIU Sharks at the Kohl Center on Jan. 17-18.

For reference, Wisconsin went a combined 2-1-1 against this field in 2023-24.

The Badgers will look to build off a strong 26-12-2 showing and clinch their second consecutive postseason berth under second-year head coach Mike Hastings.

Wisconsin basketball will play a neutral site game against Butler this season at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana, according to CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein.

The game is added to an out-of-conference schedule that has been a challenge for the Badgers in recent years. The 2024-25 slate now includes a home battle with top-ranked Arizona, the Greenbrier Tip-Off, this game against Butler and the annual rivalry matchup with Marquette.

That is all in addition to a conference slate that now includes contests against  USCUCLAOregon and Washington. Wisconsin’s recent schedules have been among the toughest in the nation (No. 3-toughest in 2023-24). The current direction of the sport and the team’s tendency to schedule top teams could see those schedules become even more difficult.

This new addition to the schedule is another meeting with longtime Ohio State head coach Thad Matta. His Butler program went 18-15 in his second year in charge in 2023-24. He has the program trending in the right direction after years of struggles after the Brad Stevens (2007-2013) and Chris Holtmann (2014-2017) eras.

Wisconsin, meanwhile, reworked its roster this offseason in preparation for the 2024-25 season. It landed three transfers — Central Arkansas guard Camren Hunter, Missouri guard John Tonje and Northern Illinois forward Xavier Amos. Greg Gard and his staff did well given the circumstances of A.J. Storr (transfer portal), Chucky Hepburn (transfer portal) and Tyler Wahl (graduation) all departing after the 2023-24 season.

The Badgers roster appears to be in good shape entering what will be a challenging 2024-25 campaign.
