Breaking down the San Antonio Spurs’ roster ahead of the 2024 NBA draft

What do the Spurs have to work with to make trades go down?

With the arrival of San Antonio Spurs star forward Victor Wembanyama as a defensive savant and developing offensive threat, the Spurs’ front office has rightly surmised that it is time to start reshaping the roster in a hurry to match Wemby’s teammates to the level of basketball he is capable of playing.

But amid all of the speculation of which players from other teams can be both good enough to trade for and able to be pried loose from their current ball club, one key element of the team building picture has largely been missing in the San Antonio media. And that would be an account of what exactly the Spurs have to work with to make those trades go down.

The folks behind the “SSPN: A San Antonio Spurs Podcast” YouTube channel recently decided to help solve that issue with a clip taking stock of the Spurs’ roster with a mind for what can be done in trades on draft night and beyond.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear their assessment of San Antonio’s roster heading into the thick of the 2024 NBA offseason.

Is Utah Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen a realistic trade target for the San Antonio Spurs?

How realistic is it that the Spurs could pry loose the Finnish big man, and how good is the fit in San Antonio

We have been hearing rumbles about the possibility of pairing star San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama with a bona fide star in the league to speed up the rebuild around Wemby next season. And more recently, a few names have been floated as potential targets for the Spurs’ front office to target.

One name in particular that has captured the imagination of San Antonio fans is that of Utah Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen. But how realistic is it that the Spurs could pry loose the Finnish big man, and how good is the fit in San Antonio given the likely steep asking price?

The folks behind the “TSR Sports” YouTube channel recently took a magnifying glass to such rumbles with the same questions in mind.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear their take on whether it makes sense for the Spurs to try to trade for The Finisher this offseason.

San Antonio Spurs hosting free 2024 NBA draft watch party

The hosts will show the whole first round of the draft.

The San Antonio Spurs are reportedly hosting a free 2024 NBA draft watch party at The Rock at La Cantera at Frost Plaza (located at 1 Spurs Way, San Antonio, Texas, 78256) according to KENS’ Jeff Garcia. It will take place on the day of the big event (June 26) of course, with things kicking off at 6 p.m. local time.

The hosts will show the whole first round of the draft (the second round will be held on another night starting this year, per league changes) to see what San Antonio will do with their Nos. 4 and 8 picks in the first round.

That could of course involve trading one or both of the picks, but we suspect the Spurs will be making at least one of the two lottery selections as they seek to improve the roster for next season.

To read a little more about the event and what to expect, check out the full post from KENS.

Could the San Antonio Spurs and Atlanta Hawks make another trade this offseason?

Their most recent exchange was the swap that sent former Spurs guard Dejounte Murray to the Hawks.

Could the San Antonio Spurs and Atlanta Hawks make another trade this 2024 NBA offseason? Their most recent exchange was the swap that sent former Spurs guard Dejounte Murray to the Hawks, but as we have all seen, the fit there has not been very good.

And as a result of that ill fit, there has been renewed chatter about San Antonio and Atlanta reversing that deal with Murray — or perhaps sending his backcourt counterpart Trae Young to the Spurs instead. Throw in the fact that the Hawks landed the top overall pick of the 2024 NBA draft, and things get even more interesting with the possibilities that could open up.

The folks behind the “TSR Sports” YouTube channel recently put together a clip of a debate with the host of the Hawks-centric pod “The Dixon Way” to talk over the possibilities.

What would a successful season for the San Antonio Spurs look like in 2024-25?

Do the Spurs need to make the play-in tournament? Or even the playoffs?

After one of the longest stretches in decades of the San Antonio Spurs missing the postseason, fans of the team expect a movement toward making the playoffs if not a postseason berth outright in the coming season.

But when one gets down to the proverbial brass tacks of what a successful season for the Spurs could end up looking like, it gets harder to say exactly what success looks like at this stage of a rebuild with a generational talent on the roster in Victor Wembanyama. Does a successful season mean adding a handful of wins to the regular season total while adding to and developing the young roster? Do the Spurs need to make the play-in tournament? Or even the playoffs?

To talk it over, the host of the “Locked On Spurs” podcast, Jeff Garcia, sat down with “Sweep The League” host Rudy Campos.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear what they had to say.

Could Colorado’s Cody Williams be a sleeper draft target for the San Antonio Spurs?

At just 19 years old, Williams has time to shape his game to compliment his physical gifts.

Could University of Colorado small forward Cody Williams be a sleeper draft target for the San Antonio Spurs in the 2024 NBA draft? At just 19 years old, Williams has time to shape his game to compliment his physical gifts. And they have him standing at nearly 6-foot-8 with a 7-foot-1 wing span that help him defend in ways which get him compared to Minnesota Timberwolves small forward Jaden McDaniels.

As we hinted, his offensive game is a work in progress, but if you happen to be a believer in his ability to grow that aspect of his toolkit, he could be the steal of the first round.

And his existing size, length, and athleticism gives him a fairly high floor should that gamble not pan out.

The folks behind the “SSPN: A San Antonio Spurs Podcast” YouTube channel took a closer look at his game and his fit in San Antonio. Check it out for yourself above!

Should the San Antonio Spurs take Providence College point guard Devin Carter?

Sometimes compared to star Boston Celtics point guard Derrick White, Carter has been garnering a fair amount of attention.

Should the San Antonio Spurs take Providence College point guard Devin Carter in the 2024 NBA draft? Standing at 6-foot-2 with a near 6-foot-9 wing span, Carter is a bit undersized at under 200 lbs., but his length, athleticism, and aggressive style of play on both ends make up for that quite a bit.

Sometimes compared to star Boston Celtics point guard Derrick White, Carter has been garnering a fair amount of attention above where he has been mocked, including in range of the Spurs’ No. 8 pick. And Bleacher Report’s Jonathan Givony relates that San Antonio is “high” on Carter, who has also worked out with the Chicago Bulls and Sacramento Kings.

The folks behind the “TSR Sports” YouTube channel took a closer look at how he might fit with the Spurs on a recent episode of their show.

What sort of star would you want to see the San Antonio Spurs go all-in for via trade?

San Antonio may elect to trade one or both of their lottery picks for an established player.

A whole lot of attention is being paid toward what the San Antonio Spurs will do with their Nos. 4 and 8 picks in the 2024 NBA draft, and rightly so. The moves they make with those picks could one day affect whether star French forward Victor Wembanyama wins a title with the players who end up on the Spurs roster from those selections.

But it’s important to keep in mind that San Antonio may elect to trade one or both of those picks for an established player instead. What sort of star would you want to see the Spurs go all-in for?

The host of the “Locked On Spurs” podcast, Jeff Garcia, took some time on a recent episode with San Antonio Sports Star’s James Pledger, who came on the show to talk about which player the Spurs should go all-in for: Darius Garland or Lauri Markkanen.

San Antonio Spurs floated as G League Ignite forward Matas Buzelis best draft fit

The 6-foot-10 swingman has been mocked more or less in the Spurs range in the lottery.

The San Antonio Spurs have been recently floated as G League Ignite small forward draft prospect Matas Buzelis‘ best fit in the list of potential landing spots in the 2024 NBA draft lottery. The 6-foot-10 swingman has been mocked more or less in the Spurs range in the lottery, with San Antonio controlling both the No. 4 and 8 picks of the draft.

“Any prospect should be excited at the idea of linking up with Victor Wembanyama, but Buzelis’ fit with the big fella could be better than most,” writes Bleacher Report league analyst Zach Buckley of the Ignite forward’s optimal landing spot this summer.

“If his shooting comes alive at this level—he’d be in great hands with San Antonio’s developmental staff—he could allow the Spurs to play enormous without sacrificing spacing, creation or open-floor athleticism,” he adds.

“Even in Buzelis’ best-case scenarios, he’s still filling a complementary role, meaning he has a chance to really shine alongside a mega-talent like Wembanyama,” suggests Buckley.

“Buzelis is a smart mover off the basketball, so he could punish teams for paying too much attention to (Wemby). In return, Wembanyama’s supreme paint protection would alleviate concerns with Buzelis’ ability to contain dribble penetration.”

Could the San Antonio Spurs end up drafting G League Ignite small forward Matas Buzelis?

Would he be the right call for either of these two lottery picks?

Could the San Antonio Spurs end up drafting G League Ignite small forward Matas Buzelis with one of their two lottery picks (Nos. 4 and 8) in the 2024 NBA draft?  The Hinsdale, Illinois native has been projected as a top five pick in many recent mock drafts, but has been falling in more recent ones, so he could be in play at either of the Spurs two selections in the lottery.

As a -6-foot-10 wing with an equally wide wing span, Buzelis value as a rebounder and rim protector as a small forward as evident. But his poor efficiency from beyond the arc (just 26.1% from deep last season with the Ignite) is a concern, as is his middling efficiency (69.6%) from the free throw line has some analysts worried.

Would he be the right call for either of these two lottery picks given all of that?

The folks behind the “TSR Sports” YouTube channel recently took a deep dive on the possibility of San Antonio drafting Buzelis. Check it out above!
