Rickie Fowler winning the 2023 US Open would just be the best

Let’s all root for Rickie.

This is the on-site version of FTW’s daily newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning. Here’s Charles Curtis.

For a while there, Rickie Fowler was The Best Player to Have Never Won a Major in golf.

In the mid-2010s, he had come agonizingly close a bunch, with three runners-up and a T3 at the PGA Championship in 2014. The golfer who was also the best-dressed, an influential player who got a following thanks to his fashion choices and great sense of humor.

But in recent years, he’s struggled to make cuts. He dropped out of the top-100 golfers in the world and it all seemed to be over for him.

Suddenly, in 2022, he was back. A T2 at the Zozo Championship in October. In 2023, a T11 at Torrey Pines, a T10 at the Phoenix Open, and top-10s at the Charles Schwab and Memorial.

Thursday? He shot a 62 (!!!) at the U.S. Open (!!!), unthinkable for anyone at what’s supposed to be the hardest major out there, but he and Xander Schauffele did it.

It would be super-duper awesome to see Fowler win at Los Angeles Country Club. So many of us have rooted for him for so long, and to see him struggle was rough. Plus, dude reportedly turned down LIV Golf, for what that’s worth.

So good luck, Rickie.

Golf fans roasted Viktor Hovland for his latest clothing choice at the 2023 U.S. Open

What are you wearing, Viktor Hovland?!

Oh, Viktor Hovland.

We’ve written this now a bunch about his clothing choices for majors. First there was that loud floral shirt at The Masters (even if it was on theme, it was still … a lot). Then there was what he wore at the PGA Championship.

Now? He’s got a blue zebra stripe thing going on at the 2023 U.S. Open. It’s … a lot. I don’t think it’s the worst thing he’s worn (that Masters shirt was something else).

And golf fans on Twitter are naturally ripping on it during the first round at LACC. Here’s a roundup of some tweets on the subject:

5 celebrity homes you can see from the 2023 U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club

So many beautiful houses at the 2023 U.S. Open that belong to celebrities.

When you’re going to play golf in Hollywood, the stars are going to come out, right?

The 2023 U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club sort of fits that bill. It’s not quite in Hollywood this year — it’s in Beverly Hills, if we’re being exact. And while we might see celebs in the gallery this week, there are some homes around the course that belong to some very famous names.

And by homes, I mean: MANSIONS. We’ve already detailed one of them, which we’ll include below, but here’s a guide to some of those palatial homes you might see all week:

How the Playboy Mansion is responsible for any monkey noises you hear at the 2023 U.S. Open

Seriously. You might hear some weird noises this week at the Los Angeles Country Club.

Yes, that’s right. The headline is correct.

You may hear some monkey noises during the 2023 U.S. Open, which is taking place at the Los Angeles Country Club. And you can blame it all on the Playboy Mansion.

Why? Because the mansion is next door, and you may be aware that the mansion has its own zoo. In that zoo? Next to No. 14 on the course? You guessed it! There are monkeys!

Former PGA Tour golfer Smylie Kaufman captured the noises and shared them on Twitter earlier this week, and yep, turn up your volume and you could hear some screeching.

A 290-yard Par 3 at the U.S. Open has golf fans feeling good about watching from home

How in the world do you even play this?

Few sports elicit more people shouting “I could do that” from their couches than golf.

The game looks so easy, after all. Just hit the ball into the hole. Big whoop. You could make those putts at Augusta or land on the island green at TPC Sawgrass, right?

To anyone who thinks they deserve to be out there with the best golfers in the world, the 2023 U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club has just one small question for you:

How would you play a 290-yard par-three? Because that’s exactly what’s waiting for anyone who wants to win this weekend.

The good news is this hole plays downhill, which chips away at the distance by about 20 yards. The bad news is there are bunkers all around the green within 30 yards of the pin. So laying up isn’t even a safe strategy.

Personally, I’m taking out my driver, hitting one way out of bounds and going back to the clubhouse for a few drinks. Good luck to anyone who has a better idea — and there sure seem to be plenty.
