Keegan Bradley got text messages from Michael Jordan, Aaron Rodgers after winning 2023 Travelers Championship

“I did a quick scan. I had two, three hundred texts” said Bradley after his win.

When Keegan Bradley hoisted the trophy Sunday it was a sweet celebration for the New England native at TPC River Highlands.

Bradley, who broke a four-year PGA Tour victory drought last October, is back on top just eight months later. The fan favorite at the 2023 Travelers Championship had as much if not more pressure than anyone in the field in Cromwell, Connecticut.

The Travelers “was the first PGA Tour event I’ve ever been to back when I was a kid. I drove from Vermont and drove here to come here and watch David Duval play,” he explained Sunday evening.

The last question during his news conference was about the text messages he’s been receiving.

“Of course Michael Jordan texted me, and that means a lot to me,” said Bradley, one of the Jordan athletes on the PGA Tour. “He’s obviously my hero but one of my good friends. Timmy Wakefield, Boston Red Sox. Baba Booey from Howard Stern texted me. That was probably my favorite.

“I did a quick scan. I had two, three hundred texts and I saw that. Aaron Rodgers. That meant a lot, even though he plays for the Jets now. It’s such a cool, when you get a text from an athlete it hits different because they know what goes into doing something like this and it means a lot.”

Rory McIlroy calls Travelers Championship host TPC River Highlands obsolete: ‘Technology has passed this course by’

“When we come to courses like this they just don’t present the challenge that they used to.”

[connatix div_id=”3f8b015acdd24c648befc5d5dac47469″ player_id=”b5b22055-8c69-4186-8375-d8426b37ec56″ cid=”7cbcea0d-4ce2-4c75-9a8d-fbe02a192c24″]

Rory McIlroy isn’t a fan of tournaments like the Travelers Championship.

Even after a T-7 finish where McIlroy shot 18 under at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut, he doesn’t like courses that allow the best players in the world to have birdie fests to win titles. Keegan Bradley took home the title at 23 under.

“Unfortunately technology has passed this course by, right,” McIlroy said after the final round. “It sort of has made it obsolete, especially as soft as it has been with a little bit of rain that we had.

“Like the conversations going back to, you know, limiting the golf ball and stuff like that, when we come to courses like this they just don’t present the challenge that they used to.”

Playing at 6,852 yards, TPC River Highlands is the second shortest course on the PGA Tour this season, behind Port Royal, which hosts the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. And players took advantage of scorable conditions in the Northeast.

Rickie Fowler and Denny McCarthy each shot 60. Patrick Cantlay added a 61. There were more 62s, 63s and 64s, as well.

McIlroy was then asked what courses like TPC River Highlands, which has hosted the Travelers Championship since 1984, can do to stay relevant in today’s game.

“You can grow the rough up and hope you get some firm conditions so it gets tricky. I think the blueprint for a really good golf course isn’t growing the rough up and making the fairways tight. That bunches everyone together,” he explained. “The blueprint is something like LACC where you have wide targets, but if you miss it’s penal. This isn’t that sort of golf course. It’s not that sort of layout. It doesn’t have the land to do that.”

“So, you know, unfortunately when you get soft conditions like this and you’ve got the best players in the world, this is what’s going to happen.”

The winning score last week at the U.S. Open was 10 under. McIlroy finished second at 9 under.

The lowest winning score this season on Tour was Jon Rahm shooting 27 under to win the American Express, which is played on three courses. Last month, Jason Day won the AT&T Byron Nelson at 23 under.

It pays to play well on the PGA Tour, especially in designated events. Just ask this week’s winner, Keegan Bradley.

The 37-year-old won the 2023 Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut, on Sunday for his sixth PGA Tour victory. Bradley, a New England native, shot a final-round 2-under 68 to claim the title at 23 under, three shots clear of Zac Blair and Brian Harman who finished T-2 at 20 under.

For his efforts, Bradley will take home the top prize of $3.6 million, while Blair and Harman will each leave with $1.78 million out of the $20 million designated event purse. Patrick Cantlay, Chez Reavie and Scottie Scheffler just missed out on the seven-figure mark, as each will earn $841,667 for finishing T-4 at 19 under.

‘I can’t believe this is real’: Keegan Bradley holds on late to win 2023 Travelers Championship for emotional victory

The win is the sixth of Bradley’s PGA Tour career and second so far this season.

[connatix div_id=”3f8b015acdd24c648befc5d5dac47469″ player_id=”b5b22055-8c69-4186-8375-d8426b37ec56″ cid=”7cbcea0d-4ce2-4c75-9a8d-fbe02a192c24″]

At the 2019 Travelers Championship it was Keegan Bradley who couldn’t catch up to eventual winner Chez Reavie at TPC River Highlands.

On Sunday it was the opposite.

Bradley entered the final round in Cromwell, Connecticut with a one shot lead over Reavie and extended that to a three-shot win at 23 under at the 2023 Travelers Championship, the sixth of his PGA Tour career and second of the season.

After a hot start, the Woodstock, Vermont, native had a disappointing finish, but his 2-under 68 was good enough to hold off Zac Blair (62) and Brian Harman (64), who finished T-2 at 20 under. Reavie (71), Scottie Scheffler (65) and Patrick Cantlay came in at T-4 at 19 under, with Rory McIlroy (64) and Denny McCarthy (67) T-7 at 18 under.

“Feels unbelievable. I literally can’t believe it,” said Bradley, who used to visit the tournament as a kid. “It was a really stressful day. I’m so glad it’s over. Today was a day I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”

Bradley began the day with a one-shot advantage over Reavie at 21 under before McIlroy joined the fray and climbed into third at 17 under after he made birdie on five of his first eight holes. Birdies on Nos. 3, 4 and 6 – as well as a Reavie bogey on No. 5 – saw Bradley’s lead extend to five shots before the turn, where he put his round on cruise control with par on Nos. 7-10.

That’s when Blair climbed into contention thanks to a stellar finish that saw him play his final six holes at 5 under to post a number at 20 under. As if he were on cue, Bradley made consecutive birdies on Nos. 11 and 12 to take a six stroke advantage with as many to play. Cantlay and Harman picked apart the back nine to join the group in second at 20 under and put some late pressure on Bradley.

A rare blemish occurred on the par-5 13th after Bradley rinsed his tee shot in the pond down the right side of the fairway. He scrambled his way to his first bogey of the day and just his second of the week before he added another on No. 14. By then Cantlay had made his third straight birdie just ahead on No. 15 to move to 21 under, just three back of Bradley who then had four to play.

“I wasn’t hitting that bad of shots. I didn’t hit a great shot on 13, but that’s how those holes are. Like you know you can make — you can birdie them and you can bogey them all,” said Bradley of his squirrelly stretch. “I just luckily played good enough to where I could afford — that’s my only bad stretch of the tournament, and luckily I was ahead enough.”

Bradley missed a short birdie putt on No. 15, but Cantlay left him off the hook after he left his par putt short to drop back to 20 under alongside Blair and Harman. The par on No. 15 briefly plugged the hole in Bradley’s round, but he continued to take on water after another poor tee shot on the par-3 16th led to yet another bogey, cutting his lead to just three.

From there, Bradley clutched up with a pair of par saves on his final two holes and was serenaded with chants of his name on the 18th green.

“I am lucky enough in my life to live out some of my dreams, and that was certainly one of them,” said Bradley of the moment. “I can’t believe this is real.”

[pickup_prop id=”34081″]

Across 17 starts this season, Bradley now has two wins following his victory at the Zozo Championship in the fall, a runner up at the Farmers Insurance Open and four additional top-10 finishes. Bradley had earned $4,977,110 entering this week, a personal record for money earned in a single season on Tour. The Travelers win, a designated event, will add $3.6 million and increase that total number to $8,577,110 on the season with plenty more events, not to mention the FedEx Cup playoffs, still to follow.

It was also a big week for Blair, whose 8-under 62 was the low round of the day on Sunday. The 32-year-old underwent shoulder surgery to his right labrum and missed nearly two years on Tour before he returned to action last July on a major medical exemption.

“Shoulder feels good,” said Blair. “Kind of every week is different, though.”

In 17 starts this season Blair has missed 10 cuts, but of the seven he’s made, three finishes came inside the top 25, with a top 10 at the Valspar Championship back in March and his T-2 this week.

The Tour now heads to the Donald Ross-designed Detroit Golf Club for the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic, June 29-July 2, as the season gears up for the looming FedEx Cup Playoffs.

Chez Reavie spotted at Cheesecake Factory watching highlights of his third round at the Travelers Championship

Who doesn’t like cheesecake?

Chez Reavie apparently does, as he was spotted at the bar of a Cheesecake Factory near TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut, on Saturday night. The best part is, Reavie was watching a replay of his third round that was on a TV.

Reavie fired a 7-under 63 on Saturday to move into solo second at the Travelers Championship. He’s in the final pairing Sunday, playing with Keegan Bradley, who’s at 21 under and has a one-shot lead over Reavie.

However, what better place to go refresh after a long day on the course than Cheesecake Factory? Come Sunday afternoon, Reavie will go for his fourth PGA Tour victory, his latest coming at the 2022 Barracuda Championship.

New England native Keegan Bradley shows no sign of slowing down, an abundance of low scores and more from Saturday at Travelers Championship

Catch up on Saturday’s action from Connecticut here.

CROMWELL, Conn. — Keegan Bradley has officially taken the governor off.

The New England native is putting on a show for the hometown crowd at TPC River Highlands, and they’re loving every second of it.

Bradley was born in Vermont, went to high school in Massachusetts and is a diehard Boston sports fan. It’d be hard to put into words how much winning the Travelers Championship would mean to the 37-year-old.

After a third-round 6-under 64, he’s in position to do just that Sunday afternoon. Bradley made birdies on Nos. 2, 4 and 6 on the front to go out in 3-under 32. After making the turn, he added three more, including back-to-back circles at 15 and 16.

“I’ve wanted to win this tournament forever, so the feeling of wanting to push and win is something I need to fight against and just let myself go out and play,” Bradley said after his round.

He’ll tee off Sunday with a one-shot lead over Chez Reavie.

It’s a native New Englander on top of the leaderboard at the Travelers Championship after 54 holes.

Keegan Bradley, from Vermont, is 21 under after three rounds at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut, after a 6-under 64 in Saturday’s third round to take the solo lead. He is one shot in front of Chez Reavie, who shot 7-under 63 on moving day, and five ahead of Patrick Cantlay.

Low scores have been a theme this week, with Rickie Fowler carding a 60 on Saturday after Denny McCarthy did on Thursday. Cantlay had a 61, and Justin Thomas added a 62 of his own. No lead is safe, but Bradley’s 64 was his worst round of the week thus far.

After ‘humiliating’ U.S. Open, the Travelers Championship is serving as the perfect palate cleanser for Justin Thomas

After a tough trip to LA, Thomas is seeing the ball go through the net in Connecticut.

[connatix div_id=”3f8b015acdd24c648befc5d5dac47469″ player_id=”b5b22055-8c69-4186-8375-d8426b37ec56″ cid=”7cbcea0d-4ce2-4c75-9a8d-fbe02a192c24″]

CROMWELL, Conn. — Sometimes you just need to see the ball go through the net. When your shot is off, take it to the rack for an easy bucket.

That’s what Justin Thomas is doing this week at the Travelers Championship, and it’s good to see.

After tying for 65th at the PGA Championship and missing the cut at both the Memorial and U.S. Open, Thomas was in a tough spot.

“It’s definitely the lowest I’ve felt. It’s pretty honestly humiliating and embarrassing shooting scores like that,” Thomas said after his two days at Los Angeles Country Club.

The 30-year-old posted a second-round 81 at the U.S. Open and seemed lost. Fast forward a few days, and Thomas was in Cromwell, Connecticut, getting ready for the final designated event of the regular season at TPC River Highlands.

His history at the Travelers isn’t fantastic, making four cuts in seven starts and posting a career-best third-place finish in 2016. But the golf course is known for giving up low scores, making it the perfect place to see the ball go through the net.

That wasn’t the story Thursday, as Thomas posted an opening-round even-par 70. All of a sudden, the Louisville native needed a great round on Friday to make the cut — which ended up being 4 under.

He delivered, firing a 6-under 64. It could have been even better, but bogeys on 17 and 18 probably made his dinner taste a little bitter.

But on a rain-soaked TPC River Highlands on Saturday, Thomas got off to a quick start.

After a par on No. 10 — Thomas started on the back nine — the 15-time Tour winner birdied the par-3 11th and the par-4 12th. His momentum took a hit thanks to a bogey at 14, but he got it right back and then some with circles at the drivable par-4 15th and 16th.

Thomas added another birdie at the 18th and went out with a 4-under 31.

Once he made the turn, he added another birdie at the second before chipping in on the par-4 fourth, his highlight of the day.

He’d add two more circles to the card coming home, and Thomas signed for a third-round 8-under 62.

Speaking with CBS after his round, Thomas told Amanda Renner “I’m having fun playing golf this week.”

It’s easy to forget when you’re going through turbulence, but this game is supposed to be fun, and this week is serving as the perfect reminder for the 2022 PGA champ.

Thomas will continue his trek back to form in Detroit next week as he’s set to make his Rocket Mortgage Classic debut. With low scores in the forecast yet again — Tony Finau won at 26 under last year — it’s another opportunity for Thomas to see more easy buckets go through the net.

But first, it’s time to make a push for a title in New England.

Rickie Fowler shoots 60 during third round of 2023 Travelers Championship

Rickie with a career round!

[connatix div_id=”3f8b015acdd24c648befc5d5dac47469″ player_id=”b5b22055-8c69-4186-8375-d8426b37ec56″ cid=”7cbcea0d-4ce2-4c75-9a8d-fbe02a192c24″]

Only 12 golfers in PGA Tour history have shot better scores than what Rickie Fowler did Saturday.

He carded an 10-under 60 on Saturday during the third round of the 2023 Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut. He made an eagle on the par-4 sixth, his 15th hole of the day, and proceeded to birdie the No. 8 to reach 60. He had a chip from the fringe on his final hole of the day for 59 but narrowly missed.

Fowler was looking to be the first player since Scottie Scheffler in the 2020 Northern Trust to shoot 59 in a PGA Tour event. Jim Furyk shot 12 under at TPC River Highlands in 2016 for the only 58 in Tour history.

During the first round, Denny McCarthy shot 60, so Fowler isn’t the first one to reach that milestone this week.

Fowler started his round on the back nine and picked up birdies at Nos. 12, 13, 15, 17 and 18, turning in 5-under 30. He also birdies Nos. 1 and 2 to sit at 7 under after 11. He rattled off three straight pars before the eagle and birdie to shoot 60, his best round on the PGA Tour.

Fowler moved to 15 under overall, good for a tie for third, with the leaders still having most of the back nine to play.
