2023 RBC Heritage odds, course history and expert picks to win

Let’s grab a winner in Hilton Head.

The week after the Masters is usually a letdown, but thanks to the new designated events on the PGA Tour, the RBC Heritage field is loaded.

World No. 1 and Augusta National champion Jon Rahm leads the way in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, as he’s joined by Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Cantlay, last year’s RBC Heritage winner Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Collin Morikawa.

Rory McIlroy, who disappointedly missed the cut last week in Georgia, withdrew from the event Monday. In one start at Harbour Town Golf Links, McIlroy finished T-41. Will Zalatoris, who was originally in the field, had season-ending back surgery after withdrawing from the Masters. Jason Day withdrew Sunday after finishing the year’s first major with an 80.

Harbour Town Golf Links – site of the 2023 RBC Heritage on the PGA Tour – was designed by Pete Dye with an assist from Jack Nicklaus and opened in 1969 on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

Part of Sea Pines Resort, Harbour Town ranks No. 2 in South Carolina on Golfweek’s Best list of public-access layouts in each state. It also ranks No. 21 among all resort courses in the U.S., and it comes in at No. 54 on Golfweek’s Best list of all modern courses in the U.S.

Harbour Town will play to 7,191 yards with a par of 71 for the RBC Heritage. With tree branches frequently dangling into playing corridors, the layout tends to favor control over brute strength as players must navigate sometimes tight fairway lines on the interior holes before the course moves to Calibogue Sound for the final two holes. The par 3s are considered by many to be among the best sets of 1-shotters in the game.

Rory McIlroy, who missed cut at the Masters, among those to withdraw from RBC Heritage

McIlroy was scheduled to be the first golfer to meet the media Tuesday at Harbour Town Golf Links.

Just days after posting scores of 72-77 at the 2023 Masters, Rory McIlroy has decided to withdraw from this week’s RBC Heritage.

McIlroy was scheduled to be the first golfer to meet the media Tuesday at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

The RBC is a designated event on the PGA Tour’s 2022-23 schedule, which means a total purse of $20 million and a first-place check of $3.6 million going to the winner.

The Tour announced that the field, which started with 146 golfers, is down to 143 and noted that “WDs will not be replaced by alternates unless needed to fill the field of 132.”

Will Zalatoris was on the RBC entry list but he announced Monday that he had back surgery two days ago and he would be out for the rest of the season.

Alex Noren withdrew from the RBC on Saturday; Jason Day did so on Sunday; Zalatoris officially did so on Monday, along with McIlroy.

Jordan Spieth is the defending champion at the RBC. He defeated Patrick Cantlay in a playoff a year ago. Cantlay is also listed in the field, as is Jon Rahm, fresh off his first Masters win, as well as Scottie Scheffler, Tony Finau, Matt Fitzpatrick, Rickie Fowler, Max Homa, Viktor Hovland, Sungjae Im, Collin Morikawa and Justin Thomas.
