[autotag]Denis Goltsov[/autotag] impresses many through his run in the PFL heavyweight season and playoffs.

Bubba Jenkins won’t squash beef with Chris Wade no matter result at 2023 PFL Championship

Bubba Jenkins says there will be no peace between him and Chris Wade.

It looks like the rivalry between [autotag]Bubba Jenkins[/autotag] and [autotag]Chris Wade[/autotag] will forever stand no matter how many times they fight.

The rivals are set to meet a third time Friday at the 2023 PFL Championship at The Anthem in Washington, D.C. Tied 1-1, it might be the most heated fued in PFL’s short history. The two have said plenty about each other over the past few years.

Jenkins (21-7) said no matter what happens Friday, he’s not making peace with Wade (23-10).

“No, no, no (we’re not shaking hands),” Jenkins said at the 2023 PFL Championship media day Wednesday. “Get out of my face. Kick rocks. I tried to shake your hand and give you that closure last time. I told you in the cage, ‘This is done. We’ve got no more ill will against each other’ in Vegas.

“I’ve got everybody in the crowd, everybody in the world that I want to be there at that moment, and if he wanted to do something we could’ve definitely done something. I let him know at that moment that this debt, this vitriol that we had, is canceled. … Friday will be his last showing with me, and I will be evicting his process and taking him out of this organization.”

Jenkins and Wade first fought in August 2021 in the featherweight semifinals. Wade defeated Jenkins by unanimous decision. The two fought again in April, when Jenkins got a unanimous decision win.

Jenkins is confident he’ll win again this time, and in no way thinks he will lose the trilogy to Wade.

“It’s going to be one-sided like our interviews and like the last fight,” Wade said. “He’s not going to beat the crap out of me. I’m telling you right now.”

Jesus Pinedo reflects on wild journey to 2023 PFL Championship final: ‘It’s been beautiful, but intense’

Jesus Pinedo’s journey to the 2023 PFL Championship final has been a wild one.

Few expected [autotag]Jesus Pinedo[/autotag] to punch his ticket into the 2023 PFL playoffs, let alone make it to the featherweight final.

Yet, the Peruvian is just one win away from a $1 million championship prize.

Pinedo returns to the cage at the 2023 PFL Championship in Washington, D.C., to compete in this season’s featherweight final against the man who almost got him out of the race in the first place – [autotag]Gabriel Braga[/autotag]. The 27-year-old has had a remarkable and unexpected, journey to the title. It’s been a true underdog story, and he’ll look to put a happy ending to it Friday.

“It’s been beautiful, but intense,” Pinedo told MMA Junkie in Spanish, reflecting on his journey through the PFL’s 2023 featherweight season. “Fight after fight and dealing with the injuries that each fight leaves you. Now I’m more known in the media. My country now knows more about me. PFL is now making the rounds in Peru, especially because I’ve reached the final.

“I’m always trying to keep my feet grounded, and I try to keep my emotions in the middle – never too high or too low. I just stay right in the middle, so I can keep focused and keep fighting well. It’s not about just winning one or two fights. I plan on winning the title.”

The road to the final wasn’t an easy one for Pinedo (22-6-1). He lost a split decision against Braga (12-0) in the opening bout of the regular season.

“In the first fight we had in Las Vegas, I thought I won that fight,” Pinedo said. “I always had in my mind that I wanted that rematch. I had no clue it was going to be in the final, but I knew that I was going to fight him one day because to me, I won that fight. I felt I won by a little.

“But anyway, things happen, and I turned the page and I focused on the other rivals and now destiny puts him in front of me once again. It’s going to be a fight for everything: the belt, the $1 million, the rematch. It’s an important fight for me.”

With only two bouts to earn playoff points in the regular season, the loss to the undefeated Braga put Pinedo in a position in which he needed to get a first-round finish in his second fight in order to make the postseason.

On top of that difficult task, Pinedo was matched against 2022 PFL featherweight champion Brendan Loughnane, who had plenty of hype and was coming off a stoppage win over Marlon Moraes to extend his streak to five.

But in shocking fashion, Pinedo wobbled Loughnane with a knee to the head, then stopped him with ground-and-pound in just 94 seconds. He pulled off another big upset in his next bout in August when he put away Bubba Jenkins, the 2021 runner-up the season prior.

“It’s been a crazy, busy year for my career,” Pinedo said. “When I accepted to fight in PFL, I knew that I was going to be fighting very tough people, opponents with world-class ability, fighters like Brendan, Bubba, guys with tons of experience and very good records.

“But this is what I prepared for. I was ready for any rival that they would put in front of me. When I started this tournament, I said I was going to win it and that I was taking that belt back to Peru. That’s what I’ve been doing and what I’ve been showing fight after fight. Now I’m just one step away from achieving it, and I’m 100 percent focused, and 100 percent concentrated on (Friday).”

Throughout this processed, Pinedo has defeated two of the more known names in PFL and headlined two events. But most importantly, Pinedo feels he’s proved he’s among the best featherweights today.

“I’m very happy that I’ve been able to show the level that I have and long with my great team,” Pinedo said. “It’s been so many years of hard work that’s now showing.”

Pinedo is not one to talk. After all, his nickname is “El Mudo,” which translates to “The Mute.” He’s not one to give a fight prediction for his rematch against Braga, but he does assure that he’s a much more different fighter than the one who lost to Braga at the start of the season.

“Braga is fighting a totally different rival from the one he fought the first time,” Pinedo said. “I wasn’t even half of what I am today.”

UFC champ Sean Strickland on PFL’s Sadibou Sy: ‘Best striker I’ve ever sparred’

UFC champ can’t rave enough about reigning PFL champ Sadibou Sy’s striking skills.

UFC middleweight champion [autotag]Sean Strickland[/autotag] rates the striking of reigning PFL welterweight champ [autotag]Sadibou Sy[/autotag] very highly.

One of Strickland’s main training partners at Xtreme Couture, Sy (16-6-2 MMA, 10-4-2 PFL) rematches Magomed Magomedkerimov in their welterweight final Friday at the 2023 PFL Championship event.

As Strickland (28-5 MMA, 15-5 UFC) preps for his own title fight against Dricus Du Plessis in the UFC 297 main event on Jan. 20, he raved about Sy’s striking and the difficulties it presents him in sparring.

“He (Sy) would be the welterweight champion (in the UFC),” Strickland said on his YouTube channel. “Then I’d probably have to fight him for the middleweight belt. Sadi is the best striker I’ve ever sparred. Proof is in the pudding, man. We’ve all seen your highlights. Generally when I spar Sadi, I’m like, ‘F*ck, this sucks. Why can’t I hit you, Sadi?! This is bullsh*t.’

“I’ll tell you what makes Sadi so good: The f*cking man thinks, dude. When he’s sparring, he just like – he’s calculated, he understands, you know? To be a really great standup artist, a lot of it comes from the mind. If someone gives you an IQ test, what do they test? They test you on reading patterns, predictability. When you’re sparring, all you’re doing is reading patterns and finding out predictabilities. High-level striking is a big IQ test.”

The 2023 PFL Championship event takes place Friday at The Anthem in Washington, D.C. The main card airs on pay-per-view (ESPN+) following prelims on ESPN+.

Kenny Florian credits PFL finalist Olivier Aubin-Mercier for recent finishes: ‘Dude is an absolute problem’

Kenny Florian is impressed by the killer instinct Olivier Aubin-Mercier has recently shown.

[autotag]Kenny Florian[/autotag] is impressed by the killer instinct [autotag]Olivier Aubin-Mercier[/autotag] has shown in recent performances.

Aubin-Mercier (20-5) will look to claim his second consecutive $1 million lightweight season win when he meets Clay Collard (24-10-1) at 2023 PFL Championship on Friday at The Anthem in Washington, D.C. The event streams live on ESPN+ PPV.

Aubin-Mercier has scored knockouts or TKOs in three of his past four fights – his first finishes since April 2018. PFL analyst and commentator Florian thinks the UFC veteran is arguably one of the top three greatest Canadian fighters of all time, and raved about his evolution as a fighter.

“I think he’s without a question top five,” Florian told MMA Junkie Radio. “Certainly I think there’s a strong argument that he’s top three. You have Rory MacDonald, Georges St-Pierre, and he still has a bunch of years ahead of him, I think. I think when you talk about his overall game, his durability, his intelligence, and now his finishing ability, dude is an absolute problem.

“His size, he’s massive as a lightweight, and it seems like he always has an answer. Now he’s gotten to the point confidence-wise, momentum-wise where he can pick you apart then finish you. Whereas before, he’d pick you apart, outsmart you, outpoint you. But now, he’s really coming into his own as a mixed martial artist.”

Although Aubin-Mercier, who’s undefeated under the PFL banner, is only getting better as a fighter, he recently told MMA Junkie that’s he’s contemplating retirement after the 2023 PFL Championship.
