Sooners 2023 signee Keyon Brown heading to Garden City Community College

Oklahoma signee Keyon Brown will not be enrolling with Oklahoma and plans to go the junior college route instead.

Oklahoma’s plans at wide receiver for the 2023 season took a hit on Monday evening. Sooners wide receiver signee Keyon Brown will no longer join the Oklahoma Sooners when the team reconvenes in a few weeks.

According to Sooners Illustrated writer Collin Kennedy of 247Sports, Brown is going the junior college route, attending Garden City Community College in Garden City, Kansas.

Oklahoma offered Brown on June 2, 2022, after an incredible showing at an OU-hosted prospect camp. He also earned an offer from Alabama. He committed to the Sooners on June 5, 2022.

In 247Sports’ rankings, Brown checks in as a three-star recruit, a top-60 wideout in the cycle and a top-70 prospect in Florida. His size and speed combination made him feel like a player destined to outplay his recruiting positioning. Oklahoma won out over Auburn, Alabama, Florida State and Tennessee.

Garden City Community College has ties to Oklahoma’s program. Head coach Brent Venables went to Garden City before transferring to play for Bill Snyder at Kansas State. Former Sooner offensive lineman Phil Loadholt played at Garden City before committing to Oklahoma.

Without Brown joining the class, four-star wide receiver Jaquaize Pettaway will be the only receiver signee the Sooners bring in this recruiting cycle. It also puts that much more of an onus on receivers not named Jalil Farooq and Drake Stoops to step up, as Oklahoma’s depth will take a hit.

Sooners circle back to Tampa Catholic to offer four-star athlete Jameer Grimsley

Oklahoma returned to Tampa Catholic to offer four-star athlete in Jameer Grimsley.

An underrated aspect of recruiting is building relationships with high schools and leveraging those relationships to help you on the recruiting trail in future recruiting battles.

Oklahoma is in the thick of that process. The Sooners recently revisited Tampa Catholic, a Florida school that produced 2023 class signee Lewis Carter, a four-star linebacker.

Carter will join the Sooners in the coming weeks along with the few remaining members of the 2023 class that didn’t early enroll in January.

While at Tampa Catholic, Carter was the most talented player on the team. His departure leaves a void for another talented athlete to fill, and four-star athlete Jameer Grimsely plans to do just that.

Grimsley transferred from Bloomingdale High School after a 2022 season in which he took snaps at wide receiver and cornerback. He caught 25 passes for 356 yards and 3 TDs in 10 games. Defensively, he totaled 10 tackles, one pass broken up and an interception, according to MaxPreps.

The talented athlete stands 6 feet, 3 inches and around 185 pounds. As a junior, he posted 10.96, 11.15 and 11.37 times in the 100-meter dash.

Grimsley has seen his recruitment jump, and he has offers from Michigan, North Carolina, Alabama and Penn State among others. Official visits to the aforementioned schools have been scheduled for June.

Considering Grimsley mentioned Jay Valai, Brent Venables and defensive coordinator Ted Roof in the post announcing his offer, it’s safe to infer the Sooners want him on the defensive side of the ball.

Oklahoma offers Florida 2023 DE Isaiah Nixon

Oklahoma’s latest offer went out to Saint Petersburg, Fla., product Isaiah Nixon.

As Oklahoma gears up for the start of spring practices on March 22, the OU staff is keeping busy on the recruiting trail. The Sooners’ latest offer went out to class of 2023 defensive end and edge rusher Isaiah Nixon out of Lakewood High School in Saint Petersburg, Fla.

In addition to Oklahoma, the 6-foot-4, 225 pound edge rusher holds offers from an impressive list of schools. According to 247Sports, Nixon’s offers list includes Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Michigan State, Ole Miss, Penn State, UCF, South Florida, Utah and West Virginia.

On3 rates Nixon as a four-star edge rusher and as the country’s No. 158 player in the 2023 class, the No. 19 edge and the No. 35 player out of the state of Florida. On3’s consensus rankings place Nixon as the nation’s No. 151 player overall, the No. 16 edge and Florida’s 29th highest-rated prospect.

In the 247Sports composite rankings, Nixon is rated as a four-star edge rusher. The recruiting service ranks Nixon as the nation’s 340th player overall, the No. 30 edge and the 67th-best player from Florida. Rivals also lists Nixon as a four-star weak side defensive end.

According to MaxPreps, Nixon finished the 2021 season at Lakewood High School with 75 tackles, 24 tackles for loss, 10 sacks and eight quarterback hurries.

Nixon’s recruitment has really picked up since mid-January. On Jan. 18, Pittsburgh offered Nixon. He added an offer from Michigan State the following day and finished the month of January with offers from Appalachian State, FIU, Ole Miss, West Virginia and Florida State.

In February, Nixon grabbed seven more offers. Miami offered first on Feb. 2 before Florida, Alabama, LSU, Georgia and Auburn extended offers. Then, Florida Atlantic offered on March 4 before Oklahoma offered on March 12.

Here’s a look at Nixon’s Hudl tape from this past season.

Oklahoma receives second On3 prediction for 2023 RB Tre Wisner

Oklahoma recently received its second On 3 prediction for class of 2023 running back Tre Wisner.

Oklahoma running backs coach DeMarco Murray restocked his position group with a pair of talented four-star running backs in Jovantae Barnes and Gavin Sawchuk in the 2022 class. The Sooners’ leading returning rusher is Eric Gray after he ran for 412 yards on 78 carries during the 2021 season. OU also brings back scholarship running back Marcus Major who has certainly shown glimpses of potential to take over a leading role.

Murray and Oklahoma are constantly looking to the future, though, and intent on ensuring that elite talent always resides in the Crimson and Cream’s backfield. That’s why Murray and the Sooners have been in on Tre Wisner since last February.

OU originally offered the 5-foot-11, 180 pound running back from Connally High School in Waco, Texas, on Feb. 17 of last year. On3 national recruiting analyst Sam Spiegelman submitted an On3 prediction for Wisner to Oklahoma on Jan. 30. Now, On3’s Hudson Standish of Inside Texas is projecting Wisner to the Sooners as well.

Rivals rates Wisner as a four-star running back and the nation’s No. 111 player in the 2023 class. According to Rivals, he’s the fifth-best running back in the class and the No. 21 player from the state of Texas. ESPN ranks Wisner as the No. 161 player overall, the No. 11 running back and the 28th highest-rated player from Texas.

In the On3 consensus rankings, Wisner is the country’s No. 176 prospect, No. 7 running back and No. 30 player from Texas. According to the 247Sports composite rankings, Wisner checks in as the No. 177 player nationally, the 10th-best running back and the No. 32 player from Texas.

OU currently has four players committed in the 2023 class: quarterback Jackson Arnold, wide receiver Ashton Cozart, offensive lineman Joshua Bates and athlete Erik McCarty.

‘He has every imaginable option’: Sooners target Bai Jobe can go to any college he wants to

After arriving as an exchange student from Senegal, class of 2023 OU target Bai Jobe now holds endless possibilities in football.

When Bai Jobe first arrived in Oklahoma as an eighth-grade exchange student from Senegal in November of 2018, he had never seen a football game. His dream was to play college basketball.

That’s what brought Jobe to his host family in Norman, Okla. James Jackson of The Oklahoman wrote a great piece ahead of this past high school football season detailing how Jobe came to live with James and Sue Bond and their family here.

Dr. James Bond is an orthopedic surgeon with an affinity for basketball but with plenty of experience working on football sidelines as a sports-injury doctor. It was during one of Bond’s shifts at a September football game between Norman and Mustang in the fall of 2020 where Jobe tagged along and first really entertained the idea of playing football. After Dr. Bond called Community Christian School head football coach Mat McIntosh and asked if it was too late in the season for Jobe to come out for football, the rest as they say is history.

Of course, McIntosh said it wasn’t too late and, after some early frustrations adjusting to the game, Jobe quickly showcased why he was a natural talent on the gridiron. It was in Jobe’s fourth game as a sophomore when he was named The Oklahoman’s staff pick for Player of the Week after registering nine tackles, three tackles for loss, a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown and a 24-yard fumble recovery return for a touchdown in CCS’ 27-7 win over Bethel.

The recruiting interest started in earnest in March of 2021 when Pittsburgh was the first to offer Jobe. That’s when the reality began to sink in that major college football might be in his future.

“Going back a year really right at this time is probably when Bai really believed that he was a football player and that his future ultimately was going to be connected to football way more than it was going to be connected to basketball. Just in visiting with him and talking to him that began to really click with him,” McIntosh said.

By the start of this past football season, Jobe already had nine Division I scholarship offers. For McIntosh, it validated everything he and his staff had felt about Jobe’s potential from the first moment they met him.

“We told him as soon as he came out that we really believed he was a Division I football player. Just his natural gifting and talents really lended it to that. We knew he was going to have opportunities,” McIntosh said.

Jobe is still gravitating to the game, but the 6-foot-4, 215 pound EDGE always possessed a unique length and explosiveness. It’s Jobe’s willingness to learn and be coached the game of football that strikes McIntosh the most.

“He’s still very much just learning the game, but every day in practice and then as we went throughout the season in games, you could just see him grasping more and more stuff. Obviously, with us, he’s been nothing but great at trying to learn and develop. And so after we got through this year and coaches could really put on some tape and see him come off the edge, see how explosive he was off the ball, see how his closing speed to run down a play from the backside…as soon as coaches began to see that, we knew the sky was going to be the limit,” McIntosh said.

Now, after a junior season in which Jobe recorded 16.5 sacks, Jobe holds 28 Division I scholarship offers according to 247Sports. Evidenced by his latest bump up in the class of 2023 On3 player rankings to No. 25 nationally, Jobe is one of the fastest risers in his class. In the month of February, Jobe picked up 10 Division I scholarship offers. That list includes the two programs that played for a national championship seven weeks ago in Alabama and Georgia.

“We told him not long ago that at the end of the day in this, he was going to have the opportunity to go really anywhere that he wanted to go. Even this past week with Nick Saban calling on Tuesday to talk to him and then during the phone call Saban himself being the one making the offer to him. I told him when we got off of that phone conversation that what that means is this: He needs to look at schools that he really wants to go to and there’s no school that’s off the table,” McIntosh said.

“Because I even told him on Tuesday that even if Georgia hadn’t offered him yet, that if we called Georgia and said, ‘Hey, Bai wants to come to Georgia. They’re going to open up their arms and say welcome.’ What’s funny is within the hour of me making that statement to him, Georgia had offered him. That’s the thing with him is just seeing the reality that he has every imaginable option that a high school kid can have and he’s fully aware of that at this point for sure.”

During his first season playing as a sophomore, the message from the coaching staff was simple. Go find the ball carrier.

“When he first came out, you know, all along when we were trying to get him to come out to play football, with just his length and explosiveness, he has the potential to be an NFL rush end. We’ve always just thought that. Defensively where we’ve always thought is his high end, you know, when he came out and he didn’t know anything, we just lined him up at that defensive end spot and really gave him this instruction, ‘Hey, find the ball and chase it. Whatever you think.’ Really that last part of his sophomore year when he came out, that’s all he did,” McIntosh said.

Now, Jobe’s role within CCS’ defense continues to expand.

“This past year we gave him more responsibility. Worked more on his technique, worked more on having multiple gap responsibilities on occasion, different blitz assignments that he would have to do and he picked all that up well. Then, as we got through last year, we began to tell him that at our level of football, there’s no one that can block him, but people can hold him if they get their hands on him. Really began to start working with him about fighting with his hands and keeping people’s hands off of him and that’s a thing that we’ve continued to work with him. He did a great job with that,” McIntosh said.

In so many ways, that growth process has still only just begun.

“Going forward next year, we’re going to move him around some more. For our program to have someone his caliber and his natural instincts, we’re going to stand him up a lot more next year at an outside linebacker spot. Give him again some more responsibility and range of stuff to do, and we’re excited because we have no doubt he’ll thrive in that,” McIntosh said.

Jobe has also worked as a wide receiver and kick returner for CCS where he had multiple touchdown returns. As is the case with everything in Jobe’s football world, he’s still so raw and a work in progress in the best of ways. The untapped potential has college programs from coast to coast salivating. It’s in part illustrated by Jobe’s recorded 40-yard dash time.

“You know, a lot of guys who you’ll see be 4.4 kids, they’ve worked on running a 40-yard dash and spent a lot of time trying to do that. Bai’s really spent no time doing that. Now, last summer at A&M, they clocked him in a 4.6 40. And so I would just say this, a 4.6 is probably about as slow of a time as you would get out of him. If he spends some time working on being a sprinter, I have no doubt he’s lower than that,” McIntosh said.

Oklahoma offered Jobe on Dec. 30, 2021, and it’s beginning to look more and more foolish that the previous staff didn’t extend an offer sooner. With the attention surrounding Jobe’s recruitment growing by the day, McIntosh is quick to share the message that he’s passed along to every college coach that would listen.

“One of the things that I tell all of the coaches that I’ve talked to, the truth is Bai is a great young man. His measurables obviously, his length, his height, his explosiveness is why he’s getting all this attention, but, at the end of the day, just his story of where he came from and where he is are way more impressive than his measurables are,” McIntosh said.

Oklahoma offers 2023 4-star Tennessee offensive lineman Brycen Sanders

Oklahoma offered Brycen Sanders, a consensus four-star offensive lineman from Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tenn.

After rounding up all of the offers Oklahoma has extended to interior offensive linemen in the 2023 class, it’s time to add another name to the list. Oklahoma offered consensus four-star offensive lineman Brycen Sanders from Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tenn.

According to On3, Sanders is the nation’s No. 213 prospect overall, the No. 15 interior offensive lineman, and the fourth-best player from the state of Tennessee. 247Sports rates Sanders as the No. 215 player nationally, the No. 8 interior offensive lineman and the fifth highest-rated recruit from Tennessee.

ESPN and Rivals both list Sanders as an offensive tackle. According to ESPN, Sanders is the 293rd player nationally, the No. 23 offensive tackle and the eight-best player from Tennessee. Rivals ranks Sanders as the country’s No. 29 offensive tackle and the No. 8 player from Tennessee.

In the On3 consensus rankings, Sanders checks in as the No. 254 player nationally, the No. 17 interior offensive lineman and the sixth-best player from Tennessee. According to the 247Sports composite rankings, Sanders is the nation’s No. 275 player overall, the No. 16 interior offensive lineman and the No. 6 player from Tennessee.

At 6-foot-5, 280 pounds, Sanders certainly has the size to play just about anywhere on Oklahoma’s offensive line in the future.

Sanders earned a day three NFL Draft projection from 247Sports national recruiting analyst Cooper Petagna. Here’s what Petagna wrote about Sanders in his evaluation on Feb. 16.

Displays good athleticism at multiple positions across the offensive line, showing the ability to anchor both tackle spots and kick inside to either guard spot.

Appears to have good knee bend and hip flexibility in and out of stance. Demonstrates good foot and body quickness off the LOS. Flashes some quick twitch explosiveness at the point of attack. Possesses above average play strength, shows the ability to move defenders naturally off the line of scrimmage. Plays with good balance and body control, understanding how to leverage defenders and finish blocks. Has some nasty to him. Shows the ability to be able to play out in space, with the ability to play in a power or zone scheme.

Position versatile lineman that can play multiple positions on the offensive line. Long term home could be inside as a guard at the next level but has the ability to play right tackle if needed. Has an excellent play temperament and adds excellent value to an offensive line unit with his versatility. Projects as a high level multi-year starter at a Power Five program at the next level. – Petagna, 247Sports.

According to 247Sports, Sanders holds 23 offers. In addition to Oklahoma, that list includes schools such as Arkansas, Auburn, Florida State, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, TCU and Tennessee.

According to Rivals, Kasper is the No. 74 player nationally, the No. 11 wide receiver and the second-best player from Arizona. 247Sports rates Kasper as the nation’s No. 165 recruit overall, the No. 20 wide receiver and the fourth-best Arizona prospect.

Kasper’s dad, Kevin Kasper, played wide receiver at Iowa during the 1997-00 seasons. Kasper also holds offers from Pac-12 schools Arizona, Arizona State, Cal, Colorado, Oregon, Oregon State, UCLA, USC and Utah.

Of course, given the legacy connection, Iowa is definitely in the running here and the Hawkeyes were one of Kasper’s first offers. Fellow Big Ten schools Michigan State, Nebraska, Northwestern, Ohio State and Penn State have offered Kasper. Georgia, Missouri, Tennessee and Vanderbilt have offered out of the SEC and Kasper has offers from ACC schools Duke and Miami. Iowa State and Notre Dame have offered Kasper as well.

With Kasper’s height and long frame, he certainly fits the mold for the type of wide receiver it seems Oklahoma offensive coordinator and OU wide receivers coach Cale Gundy have been targeting of late.
