Instant Analysis: LSU men’s basketball falls to Dayton on last-second heartbreaker in Charleston Classic opener

The Tigers squandered a major opportunity on Thursday evening in Charleston.

LSU’s men’s basketball team looked like it was going to bounce back from the loss to Nicholls in tremendous fashion with a win over Dayton for nearly 40 minutes on Thursday afternoon, but a gutsy comeback and last-second go-ahead three gave the Flyers the 70-67 win in the quarterfinal round of the Charleston Classic.

After a tightly contested first half that saw the Tigers take a 32-30 lead to the locker room, they stretched that lead to as much as 15 with under 10 minutes to play in the game. But Dayton went on a 17-2 run to get back in the game, and Nate Santos’ shot in the final seconds proved to be the game-winner as a Carlos Stewart three fell short at the buzzer.

LSU finished the game shooting above 50% as a team, but it wasn’t as efficient down the stretch and had eight second-half turnovers.

[autotag]Jalen Reed[/autotag] was a bright spot, leading the team with 16 points, while [autotag]Tyrell Ward[/autotag] scored 12 and [autotag]Will Baker[/autotag] scored 10. Defensively, LSU held the Flyers under 40% shooting but struggled to contain stars Santos (19 points), Javon Bennett (16) and Koby Brea (13).

It was an excellent opportunity to earn a win over a possible tournament team, but now the 1-2 Tigers will have to look elsewhere to start rebuilding their resume. They will be back in action on Friday morning against North Texas, which lost 53-52 against St. John’s. at 10:30 a.m. CT.

LSU basketball to open against Dayton in Charleston Classic

The Tigers are returning to the Charleston Classic for the first time since 2011.

The Tigers already knew they were heading to South Carolina from Nov. 16-19 to take part in the Shriners Children’s Charleston Classic, and now they know their bracket, as well.

LSU will open against Dayton on Nov. 16 at TD Arena. Coach Matt McMahon’s team will face off against either St. John’s or North Texas the following day. That opening matchup will be televised on ESPN2 at 3 p.m. CT.

This will be the Tigers’ second all-time trip to the Charleston Classic. They went 2-1 at the event in 2011.

Regardless of the results in the tournament, LSU will face three opponents with Houston, Towson, Utah and Wake Forest rounding out the field. The two unbeaten teams will face off in the championship on Nov. 19.

LSU basketball to compete in 2023 Charleston Classic

The event will be held from Nov. 16-19 in Charleston, South Carolina.

The LSU men’s basketball team has been selected to join the field at the 2023 Shriners Children’s Charleston Classic from Nov. 16-19.

The Tigers will be joined at TD Arena in Charleston, South Carolina, by Dayton, Houston, North Texas, St. John’s, Towson, Utah and Wake Forest. The Tigers faced the Demon Deacons last season, scoring a two-point win on a neutral court in Atlanta early in the season as part of Holiday Hoopsgiving.

The two also faced the prior year in Niceville, Florida, in what was a 14-point win for then-coach Will Wade’s squad.

This will be the second time the Tigers have participated in the Charleston Classic. LSU was also in the field back in 2011, going 2-1 with a loss in the opener to Northwestern followed by wins over Western Kentucky and Georgia Tech.

The specific matchups and game times will be announced at a later date.
