Celtics Lab 223: Looking ahead to Boston’s 2023-24 season opener, wrapping up unfinished business

With the NBA’s 2023-24 regular season nearly upon us, what else do the Celtics need to get done?

Opening night for the Boston Celtics‘ 2023-24 season opener against the New York Knicks is nearly upon us, leaving little time for the Celtics’ front office to make final roster decisions about a number of rotation players, extend or offer full contracts to two way players if they so desire, and to tend to any other issues in terms of how the team will play on both ends of the court that they believe still needs attention for the season ahead.

The team also signed a new two way player to fill the slot left by Jay Scrubb after his ACL injury ended his season with Boston before it began in Nathan Knight, and in a more immediate sense have games against the New York Knicks and Miami Heat for their season and home openers to prepare for.

With all of that in mind, the hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast put together one final offseason pod for the summer of 2023 to talk our way through all the above and more.

We also get caught up on the trickle of news left to cover before the games begin to count.

Mazzulla on Al Horford’s stint off the bench: ‘He seems to be the guy that always makes the right play’

Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla explained why Al Horford is key for his club’s success regardless of Boston’s starting line up.

The Boston Celtics may be one of the top teams in the NBA this season, but there are still some looming questions surrounding the club. Chief among them, who will be the starting lineup for head coach Joe Mazzulla?

Bringing All-Stars Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis to Boston was a major splash by the club’s front office, but it means Mazzulla is left putting together a starting group and rotation to maximize his team’s success and keep peace in the locker room. During Tuesday’s preseason action against the New York Knicks, Mazzulla opted to bring Al Horford off the bench. The coach praised his veteran big man following the game.

“He’s just kind of adjusting to that role,” Mazzulla explained. “Playing with the second unit in this game, I thought he did a great job.”

Boston drops 23 3-pointers as Celtics top Knicks 123-110 in penultimate preseason tilt

The Celtics dropped 23 3-pointers as Boston defeated the visiting New York Knicks at TD Garden Tuesday evening.

The Boston Celtics defeated the New York Knicks 123-110 Tuesday evening in the penultimate preseason game on the schedule for the Celtics. Prior to the action, Celtics head coach Mazzulla spoke about wanting to give his starters meaningful minutes with the regular season just around the corner. Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau, meanwhile, opted to rest his core players, making for a lopsided affair.

It was an offensive bonanza for the home team, anchored by a strong showing from Boston’s core players. The Celtics were especially good shooting the ball, building an early lead against the shorthanded Knicks. Credit New York’s reserves for hanging tough wire to wire, but the home team was too good on offense for the visitors to ever put the outcome in doubt.

Here’s what you missed from Boston’s preseason victory over New York Tuesday night.
