How the Kristaps Porzingis deal could affect the Boston Celtics future?

The Boston Celtics are closing in on a three-team trade for Kristaps Porzingis that will have some major effects on the team moving forward.

The Boston Celtics are closing in on a three-team trade for Kristaps Porzingis that will have major effects on the team moving forward, which were highlighted by HoopsHype’s Yossi Gozlan.

Among the highlights is the fact Gozlan believes the deal “will likely be executed during the current salary cap year” because of the more flexible trade rules in effect until July 1 and because the trade would make it far less likely for the Celtics to retain unrestricted free agent Grant Williams.

They could sign and trade Williams to another team for draft assets and/or cheaper players to maximize their asset pool as they head into a likely expensive era of title contention.

This move is not the last splashy addition Boston could make to the team either, though they will have less money to work with. The team is projected to be $8 million below the second tax apron with 12 players under contract. That allows them to use the $5 million taxpayer mid-level exception.

Be sure to check out the article in full here to see the full potential ramifications of the deal for all three teams involved at present.

Washburn: Boston’s Jayson Tatum needs to have an MVP season in 2023-24

The Celtics star needs to shut up and put up after two squandered postseason opportunities.

For much of the early part of the NBA’s 2022-23 season, star Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum looked every bit the part of the front-runner for the league’s 2023 Most Valuable Player award.

Then his season went sideways. Tatum’s game slipped a few gears. The Celtics campaign to return to the NBA Finals fizzled out in a rematch with the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference finals.

Will the St. Louis native take over the league and stake his claim for the 2024 NBA MVP?

“Tatum has to go into this year coming up and be like, this is my MVP year, this is my year,” said Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe during a recent guest appearance on the CLNS Media “Celtics Beat” podcast.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear what they had to say about Tatum’s expectations heading into 2023-24.

Should the Boston Celtics have traded for Bradley Beal?

What happens to Paul now that he’s with Washington?

The Phoenix Suns traded for Bradley Beal, sending Chris Paul, Landry Shamet, second-round draft picks and two first round pick swaps to the Washington Wizards in a deal that kept Beal away from the Miami Heat. However, it was probably a value the Boston Celtics could have matched.

Should the Celtics have pulled the trigger on a deal for Beal? What happens to Paul now that he’s with Washington? Is he going to stay? Push for a buyout that could put him on Boston’s radar as a free agent? Or might he retire altogether?

The host of the CLNS Media “Garden Report” podcast, Bobby Manning, reported on Sunday’s big news in a special emergency pod.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear everything you need to know about the Beal trade to the Suns.

Report: Phil Pressey to join Boston Celtics as an assistant under Joe Mazzulla

Pressey played for Boston between 2013 and 2015.

Another familiar face has been added to the Boston Celtics bench to support head coach Joe Mazzulla in the 2023-24 NBA season.

That familiar face is former Celtics point guard Phil Pressey, who played for Boston between 2013 and 2015, per new reporting from the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach.

After several seasons elsewhere in the NBA and in Europe, Pressey took a job as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Missouri, last season. The 32-year-old former floor general is likely not the last coaching hire the Celtics will make this season.

They have already hired former Boston point guard Sam Cassell and Milwaukee Bucks assistant Charles Lee as bench assistants.

According to Himmelsbach, “the Celtics are planning to add one or two more behind-the-bench coaches to Mazzulla’s staff in the coming weeks.”

What’s the worst that can happen to the Boston Celtics this offseason?

Whenever someone asks “What’s the worst that can happen?”, the reality is almost always worse than whatever it might seem to be at first glance.

Whenever someone asks “What’s the worst that can happen?”, the reality is almost always worse than whatever it might seem to be at first glance. And with the NBA’s 2023 offseason here in earnest, getting what the worst that could happen right is a critical concern for every team in the league not currently fighting for an NBA championship.

One intrepid analyst recently elected to try and join those teams on that fraught journey, with the “Hoops Reference” YouTube channel doing their best to identify what the worst-case scenario for each team in the league would be, and the Boston Celtics were of course included.

To hear the finer details of what they think the worst that can happen to the Celtics (and the rest of the NBA) looks like, take a look at the clip embedded below.

What is the Boston Celtics’ short-term plan to build another contending roster?

The Celtics have a busy offseason ahead of them.

The Boston Celtics likely plan to extend All-NBA forward Jaylen Brown’s contract this offseason, despite the potential salary cap complications that will be created by having him and Jayson Tatum on supermax deals. Tatum is eligible for his supermax deal the season after next.

The guard rotation of Marcus Smart, Derrick White, Malcolm Brogdon and Payton Pritchard also needs to be addressed. Though the offseason is only a few days old, rumblings to that effect are already growing louder across the NBA media.

What is the short-term plan of the Celtics to build another contending roster?

The hosts of the “A Funky Diabetic” podcast recently put together a video where they break down the challenges Boston faces, and how they think the Celtics will try to solve those concerns. Check it out in the clip embedded above.

Is it time to keep or trade Boston Celtics point guard Marcus Smart?

Should the Celtics keep Smart, or move on from him?

Marcus Smart’s 2022-23 season with the Boston Celtics revealed a polarizing player who was misused by the team for much of the campaign but was still key despite being relegated from point guard to defensive specialist.

The Flower Mound native often struggled with his shooting from beyond the arc but also excelled in distributing the ball to his teammates when given the chance. The Celtics’ heavy focus on 3-point shooting this year hindered Smart’s offensive performance given his history as a streaky long-distance shooter. Oddly, his defense also slipped, although he remained a better defender than many players on the team.

Should the Celtics keep Smart or move on from him in light of all of the above?

The host of the “Locked On Celtics,” John Karalis, weighed in on this significant concern with guest Tom Westerholm in a recent episode; take a look at the clip embedded above to hear their thoughts on Smart’s future in Boston.

Washburn: The Boston Celtics need to add toughness to the team this offseason

Boston’s moves this offseason are especially weighty in terms of their future potential to hang a banner.

What is the future for head coach Joe Mazzulla, supermax extension candidate Jaylen Brown and the Boston Celtics in the NBA’s 2023 offseason?

From balancing the roster under the league’s new collective bargaining agreement to decisions on whether to extend Brown, re-sign reserve forward Grant Williams or trade one of their surplus guards looms large for Boston.

Particularly given the fact the new CBA will likely shorten the franchise’s contention window considerably — as it was designed to do — making Boston’s moves this offseason especially weighty in terms of their future potential to hang a banner. Adding toughness may be an avenue they want to explore as well.

Max and Josue Pavon, the hosts of the eponymous “Cedric Maxwell” podcast, and guest Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe discussed all of the above in their first offseason episode we have embedded below — be sure to check it out!

Celtics Lab 201: Setting expectations for Boston’s 2023 offseason with Howard Beck

What will a successful offseason look like for the Celtics in light of the sting of the loss in the East finals? How should they progress in light of Jaylen Brown’s potential supermax extension and the new collective bargaining agreement?

With the action of the NBA’s 2023 offseason about to start unfolding, it’s fair to say events beyond the control of the Boston Celtics set the team up for failure last season even before the 2022-23 campaign began.

Now, the Celtics have a full offseason to surround head coach Joe Mazzulla with the support he’ll need and the time to make the trades and other moves needed to secure Boston’s pursuit of a title next season and in the future.

What will a successful offseason look like for the Celtics in light of the loss in the East finals? How should they move forward given Jaylen Brown’s potential supermax extension and the new collective bargaining agreement?

Where does Grant Williams’ restricted free agency factor into these things? What else does the roster need, and for the players coming back, where is improvement needed?

With a host of things on the Celtics’ to-do list, the hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast reached to GQ’s Howard Beck to put together some expectations for this team’s offseason and the campaign ahead of it.

We even get in a little chatter about some of the bigger rumbles we’ve been hearing ahead of silly season’s full florescence along with some criticism of teams holding fanbases hostage.
