WNBA commissioner trolled All-Star MVP Kelsey Plum with an even smaller trophy after the Commissioner’s Cup

“Cathy got jokes!”

Las Vegas Aces star Kelsey Plum went off for 30 points in the WNBA All-Star game on July 10, but all anyone wanted to talk about after the game was her MVP trophy. It was so, so small, especially compared to the NBA’s enormous Kobe Bryant All-Star MVP trophy that debuted in February.

The internet had a lot of jokes, and WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert didn’t forget. She brought the jokes with her to the Commissioner’s Cup Final between the Aces and Chicago Sky on Tuesday.

After the Aces won, Englebert gifted Plum a new trophy, and it was even smaller than the original.

The new trophy was so small Plum initially thought the gag was an empty box. The laughs really came out after she dug through the Tiffany & Co. box for the little cup buried underneath all the plastic.

“Cathy got jokes!”

That is equal parts cold and hilarious! At least the Commissioner’s Cup was a good size.

WNBA All-Star weekend begins on Saturday with highly anticipated 3-Point Shootout and Skills Challenge

Can Allie Quigley repeat as 3-Point champion?

WNBA All-Star weekend is here and ready to take center stage. The actual game will be played Sunday in Chicago, but before then, the weekend’s other festivities must transpire.

Of course, the WNBA Skills Challenge and the 3-Point Shootout are the two thrilling and entertaining festivities. Each will take place on Saturday, unlike last season in Las Vegas when the contests were performed at halftime of the All-Star Game.

From point guards to centers, the Skills Challenge will feature eight of the league’s best, who come with a bunch of impressive and varying abilities: Jonquel Jones, Sabrina Ionescu, Courtney Vandersloot, Rhyne Howard, NaLyssa Smith, Azura Stevens, Kelsey Plum and Jackie Young.

And the 3-Point Shootout will feature Kelsey Plum, Rhyne Howard, Ariel Atkins, Jewell Loyd, Arike Ogunbowale and Allie Quigley.

Sidenote — Quigley is the defending 3-Point Shootout champion and has three wins in her bag. Yet, her odds at some sportsbooks aren’t the shortest. It might be worth taking a swing at those for a potentially nice payout.

You can catch all of the action live on ESPN at 3 p.m. ET. Make sure to tune in.

WNBA All-Star Game: See the teams A’ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart drafted (with trades!)

Stewie and A’ja made some great picks and trades.

Saturday afternoon was quite the day for WNBA fans.

ESPN showcased a 2021 Finals rematch between the Phoenix Mercury and Chicago Sky, which went exactly how it did last fall.

And then the rematch was followed up by the 2022 WNBA All-Star Team Selection Special, a draft live draft with each selection made by captains A’ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart.

The two squads are stacked, as expected. And from Stewie’s draft clipboard to some specific teammate pairings, there were plenty of nuggets to go along with the overall fun process.

Here’s a look at the two teams and what we make of the selections.

A’ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart lead early fan voting for 2022 WNBA All-Star Game

The fans are getting it right.

That was quick! More than a quarter of the WNBA season is in the rearview, which means the league is just one month away from its July 10th All-Star Game, which will be held in Chicago. With that date quickly approaching, the W has released its first returns of fan voting for the game.

As expected, Las Vegas Aces’ center A’ja Wilson is the leading vote-getter after the first returns. Her 21,688 votes are the most not only of any frontcourt player but also of any player in the league this season, which is a tip of the hat to her MVP-caliber 2022 campaign.

Breanna Stewart pulled in the second-most votes (20,866), and Wilson’s Las Vegas teammate, Kelsey Plum, earned the most votes amongst guards (17,158) and the fourth-most votes overall.

Other noteworthy tallies include rookie sensation Rhyne Howard of the Atlanta Dream receiving 8,516 votes, and Brittney Griner getting 3,833 votes — a very kind gesture from the fans to the future Hall of Fame center who is still being wrongfully detained in Russia.

Fan voting is available through June 20th.
