Cowboys News: Prescott chance to play dwindles, Eagles’ air yards in decline?

Confident defense heading into Philadelphia, keys to victory and all things Cowboys-Eagles in the latest collection of Cowboys links. | From @CDBurnett7

The Cowboys and Eagles’ heavyweight matchup on Sunday night may be the biggest game of the year through six weeks. Philadelphia comes in undefeated and confident while Dallas has turned an underdog situation with quarterback Cooper Rush into multiple signature wins and a 4-1 start.

Defensive end Demarcus Lawrence hasn’t minced words this week, critical of the Eagles offense and proclaiming “y’all will see it on Sunday.” The defenses are the keys to the game, with prolific pass rushes on both sides that are poised to force turnovers early and often in Lincoln Financial Field.

For Dallas, Rush is expected to start while the questionable designation for quarterback Dak Prescott still looms as a possibility for him to be active vs. Philadelphia, though that appears more unlikely than likely. Keys for the Cowboys to end the Eagles’ undefeated start, contract discussions to watch and more in the game-day News and Notes.

Cowboys vs Eagles: 6 things to know about the Week 6 matchup

These aren’t the same Eagles that Dallas dominated in 2021. Get to know the 2022 version ahead of SNF. | From @BenGrimaldi

It’s Philadelphia week for the Dallas Cowboys. Just kidding, of course, because that type of obsession mostly comes from Eagles fans. However, it is a big week for the Cowboys as they attempt to win their fifth straight game. Despite the winning streak and playing with a backup quarterback, the Cowboys still don’t appear to be taken seriously, yet.

Each week has been a “can they do it again” type of vibe. After last week was labeled their biggest test, along comes another challenge, and this one looks to be the real measuring stick. The Eagles are the only undefeated team in the NFL, and they have looked like one of the best teams in the league. Dallas is still playing with Cooper Rush under center, on the road for Sunday Night Football in a raucous environment, and their best defensive player, Micah Parsons, is a bit hobbled. Here are six things to know about the Eagles in preparation for the Week 6 showdown.

Cowboys move 2 to IR, add RB to 54-man roster vs Eagles for Week 6

Malik Davis, a preseason star and UDFA from University of Florida, will get his first NFL action this weekend. See what else has changed. | From @KDDrummondNFL

The Dallas Cowboys shuffled their roster yet again, this time in anticipation for the biggest NFC matchup of the 2022 season. As they boarded their plane for the east coast, the club announced their Week 6 roster moves to prepare to take on the undefeated Philadelphia Eagles. When it comes to roster moves, each NFL week follows a similar pattern.

Two days before the game, in this case Friday, the club files their official injury report following the week of practice. On the next day the team announces any practice squad call-ups, which Dallas has taken advantage of every week since the process began in 2020. On game day, about an hour and a half before kickoff the team will announce their inactives, a group of 5-7 players on the roster who will not dress in pads for the game. In Week 6, Dallas’ elevations are part of a bigger shuffle as they have moved RB Rico Dowdle and WR Simi Fehoko off the roster and into injured/reserve.

Fehoko (shoulder) is a complete surprise, as he wasn’t on any of this week’s practice/injury report. Meanwhile Dowdle is somewhat a surprise as it wasn’t let on his ankle was serious enough to warrant a four-week break.

Dallas added just one player to their official roster, long snapper Matt Overton, and then elevated two PS players for the week brining their roster to 54 for Week 6. It leaves a roster spot open for a player to be added next week, such as LB Damone Clark off the NFI.

Among the callups is former Florida Gators RB Malik Davis, who was really impressive during preseason. Dowdle hasn’t carried the ball yet this season, so Davis is likely an emergency play in the offensive backfield but should see time on special teams.

The team will have to make six players inactive on Sunday afternoon. In the meantime, here’s a look at the full roster.

Defending the Jalen Hurts experience. How bad the Dallas defense’s competition been. How you should bet. Get it all here from @KDDrummondNFL and @Ryan_OLeary.

Less than 24 hours remain before the Dallas Cowboys (4-1) take on the undefeated Philadelphia Eagles (5-0) for supremacy in the NFC East. Every week K.D. Drummond and Ryan O’Leary meet up to discuss the latest on the Cowboys but this one has a special feel. Other than having to correct O’Leary that it’s not Philly Week for Dallas, but rather Dallas Week for Philly, the two go in on several hot topics of the week.

From the 6.5-point underdog status, to ranking the best CBs in the game there’s plenty to discuss in addition to Dak Prescott’s return to practice, including the debate about how much Cooper Rush is contributing to the winning streak. The highlight? The giddiness over Dan Quinn getting his shot to combat the Jalen Hurts Experience. Tune in!

Prescott could be active for Cowboys, Eagles miraculously recover in final Week 6 injury report

The final injury report is out and while there’s good news on the Cowboys side, there’s also good news for the opposing sideline. The latest designations. | From @KDDrummondNFL

All eyes are on the quarterback position for the Dallas Cowboys. In what is certainly a promising change, but could end up being more subterfuge than anything else, the franchise QB enters the weekend with a chance to don shoulder pads. Dak Prescott has been on the shelf since breaking his thumb in the fourth quarter of the Week 1 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He underwent surgery the following day and ever since fans have waited with bated breath on his return. Jerry “Optimist Prime” Jones attempted to tease fans Prescott could return in a few weeks, but five weeks later the club is preparing for Cooper Rush’s fifth-straight start.

But for the first time since Week 1, Prescott has an injury designation other than Out, which is a huge ramp up as he was a limited practice participant for the first time on Thursday. He followed it up with another limited practice on Friday and is listed as questionable. Now, that doesn’t even mean that he’ll be Rush’s backup on Sunday night against the Philadelphia Eagles, but by Lloyd Christmas it does mean there’s a chance.

As for the rest of the Cowboys, there was progress with several stars who had injury concerns and a potential setback for another. For updates on the status of Micah Parsons, DeMarcus Lawrence, CeeDee Lamb and others, check below for their game designations. On the Eagles’ sideline, things cleared up as well. There is some scuttlebutt on whether or not they will activate Andre Dillard from injured reserve as Jordan Mailata returned to full participation on Friday.

Here’s a look at all the players listed by each sideline.

1st quarter scoring among 3 keys for Cowboys, Eagles in Week 6 showdown

Different challenges face each team, but these 3 areas are where their concerns merge ahead of SNF. | From @CDPiglet

Going into this season, not many prognosticators would’ve bet on the NFC East having the sole undefeated team in the league, and two one-loss teams five weeks into the season. Add an injury to Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback Dak Prescott and nobody is placing that bet.

The New York Giants have shocked everyone going 4-1, with the lone loss coming at home against Dallas. The Philadelphia Eagles are looking dominant at 5-0, and the Cowboys at 4-1, undefeated with Cooper Rush, might be the most surprising of all. The two teams matchup on Sunday night for early division supremacy.

Philadelphia is running over their opponents unlike any other team in the NFC. They’re tied for second in the league in point differential at 47 points, more than double that of Dallas at 21. Their offense is averaging 27 points per game, the Cowboys aren’t even averaging 20. The Eagles lead the league in turnover differential at +9, almost doubling that of last year’s turnover kings.

Dallas is winning with their defense. As the passing offense gets worse statistically every week, the defense continues to allow less points than they did the game prior. Dallas isn’t as dominant in all three phases as their opponent this week, but they are making enough big positive plays, and avoiding too many big negative plays to continue to win.

Something has to give in this matchup of early NFC powerhouses. Here are the keys to victory between these two NFC East rivals.

Cowboys News: Quinn’s stunting, Cover 2 defense (yes that’s right) gets its flowers

The defensive mindset rising in Dallas is thanks to the ever-evolving mastermind in the booth, plus Prescott’s return updates as Week 6 approaches. @CDBurnett7 collects the news and notes.

Smart Cowboys fans can only pray the band stays together when it comes to the coaching staff. On Wednesday, two different highly respectable outlets took on the task of explaining just what has been working so well for the Dallas defense on a schematic level. Dan Quinn has done a phenomenal job, but how is he putting these players in position to succeed?

With six sacks through five games, Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons earned a weekly reward during a season that’s trending towards more hardware for the sophomore star. Parsons’ success is one of many stories on a defense that has changed the narrative for a franchise dictated by offensive success throughout the Tony Romo and most of the Dak Prescott era.

Prescott’s absence has played into it, but Dallas is relying on the run game heavily with 164 yards on the ground against the Rams, catering to the defensive mindset instilled by Mike McCarthy and Dan Quinn. While Cooper Rush is keeping the ship above water, Prescott is moving closer to a return, but it likely won’t be this week as the 4-1 start allows the Cowboys to be careful with his return.

Offensive lineman Jason Peters delivered a brutally honest compliment about his former team as the Sunday night matchup of Dallas and Philadelphia looms large with fanbases ready to decide who owns the NFC East early in the season. Injury reports for both teams, including Prescott and Peters’ status, and more in the latest News and Notes.

Prescott practice status, Peters promising in 1st Cowboys-Eagles injury report of Week 6

Prescott ramping up, but did he practice? Parsons played through a groin injury, the latest on him and the Eagles OL. | From @KDDrummondNFL

The Dallas Cowboys returned to the practice field on Wednesday, readying themselves for the NFL’s first major showdown of 2022. When schedules are released, there are always certain early-season matchups that get circled because of anticipated greatness, but it actually takes a while to see who the best teams are. After five weeks, it’s clear that group includes the Philadelphia Eagles and the Cowboys, who just so happen to meet on Sunday Night Football.

There are, of course, stories galore, but on Wednesday the focus is on who is still nicked up and who is on the mend as both teams have injury issues they hope will clear by game time. The highest profile injury of course is Dallas QB Dak Prescott, who hasn’t played since Week 1. His thumb injury healing after surgery, Prescott was involved in portions of the routine on Wednesday, but officially Did Not Participate in what would be considered the on-field portion of practice.

Prescott isn’t the only key player on the practice report though, as LB Micah Parsons, DE DeMarcus Lawrence and OL Jason Peters were also included. Parsons didn’t work, but is expected to play Sunday. On the opposite sideline, one of the best offensive lines in football has injury concerns at three of the five starting spots. Here’s the practice report for Wednesday.

Rapper Meek Mill, Dez Bryant place bet on upcoming Cowboys-Eagles faceoff

Once a Cowboy, always a Cowboy, Dez Bryant is putting his coins up in belief of what his former team can and will do in the NFC East.

There’s still two-plus weeks to go, but that doesn’t mean people aren’t already looking ahead to the next time the Cowboys and Eagles square off. Dallas, the reigning division champions, have bounced back from an anemic performance in Week 1 to win two games in a row. The Philadelphia Eagles, after the Miami Dolphins loss on Thursday night, currently stand as the last remaining undefeated team at 3-0.

Both teams have games to play on Sunday with Dallas hosting the Washington Commanders and the Eagles facing upstart Jacksonville, as well as games the following week, but that doesn’t stop those on the outside from looking ahead. That group involves the current king of Philly rap Meek Mill and the Cowboys latest former player ambassador to the streets, Dez Bryant. On Friday the Maybach Music front liner put out a call on Twitter for any and all comers to bet against his hometown Eagles. Bryant quickly put the terms into the atmosphere.

For those who don’t remember, Bryant referenced smoking that Giants pack in predicting a Cowboys’ victory on Monday night. He was right then, and Cowboys fans hope he’s right again.

After Washington, Dallas will travel to take on the Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams before traveling to Philadelphia on October 16. There’s a pretty big chance Dallas will either already have, or will be welcoming back quarterback Dak Prescott, who hasn’t played since Week 1. Meanwhile the Eagles are flying high thanks to the rapid improvement as a passer of quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Mill accepted Bryant’s bet and the Cowboys’ all-time touchdown reception leader quickly “locked in” the gentleman’s agreement.
