Alex Anzalone offers a great analogy for the 2022 Lions defense

Anzalone made a great point on Sirius XM NFL Radio about overcoming a terrible start

The 2022 Detroit Lions had a tale of two seasons defensively. Out of the wreckage of the disastrous start, the Lions emerged as one of the league’s best defenses down the stretch. If not for the brutal outlier in Carolina in Week 16, Detroit’s defense was a top-5 unit in yards allowed and points allowed over the final six weeks. Even with the atrocious day in Charlotte, the Lions were still an upper-echelon defense over the final two months.

The overall season statistics don’t reflect that upward spike and late-season improvement, unfortunately. Linebacker Alex Anzalone, whose dramatically improved play down the stretch helped fuel the surge, offered up a great analogy for the full-season rankings sticking near the bottom in most categories.

In an appearance on Sirius XM NFL Radio, Anzalone shared a relatable concept about the Lions defense in 2022.

“The way I put it is, you’re early in a semester and you fail the first two or three tests, it’s hard to bounce back from that statistically,” Anzalone told hosts Pat Kirwan and Jim Miller. “If you look at our numbers, I think from Week 9 or Week 10 on, we were really a dominant defense. That’s really a credit to (Lions DC Aaron Glenn) and what he stuck to and really what he changed also, personnel-wise — making hard decisions. Schematically, figuring out how to put our players in really great positions to succeed, myself included.”

Anyone who started slowly in a class in high school or college (or both) understands how hard it can be to bring up the mark for the full semester. It’s a well-conceived analogy by Anzalone, who also talked up Glenn’s candidacy as a head coach in the interview.

DJ Chark was one of the NFL’s best at generating big plays in 2022

Lions WR DJ Chark was one of the NFL’s best at generating big plays in 2022 and average depth of target as a receiver

One of the free agents the Detroit Lions targeted in the last offseason was wide receiver DJ Chark. The speedy wideout was brought in from the Jacksonville Jaguars to give the Lions a legit deep threat with some size on the outside.

Chark delivered upon that vision and potential. Despite playing through some injuries, including an aggravation of the ankle that cost him most of his final season in Jacksonville, Chark notched one of the highest big-play rates of any wide receiver in 2022.

Chark produced a big play, defined as a catch of 20 yards or more and a run of 10 yards or more, on nine of his 52 touches. That big-play rate of 17.3 percent ranked sixth among receivers with at least 40 touches. All of Chark’s came from receptions; he did not have a single rushing attempt in 2022.

Here’s the full chart from Marcus Mosher of PFF and Raiders Wire:

The full chart shows the mix of receivers the Lions have in Ben Johnson’s offense. Chark and Kalif Raymond (tied for 19th at 15.5 percent) are the big-play weapons. Josh Reynolds (top of column two) served in more of an intermediate capacity. Amon-Ra St. Brown, the team’s workhorse with 155 touches (5th-most in the league) was Detroit’s chain-mover with a big-play rate of just 8.4 percent.

Chark is an unrestricted free agent, and the Lions drafted Jameson Williams in the first round of the 2022 NFL draft to provide even more speed. It makes for an interesting decision on Chark’s future in Detroit.

Where the Lions rank in statistical metrics after Week 8

Here is where the Lions rank in various statistical categories across the NFL after Week 8.

Eight weeks of the 2022 NFL season have played out. It’s not quite the halfway point in a 17-game schedule, but it’s still a nice breaking point in the season.

The Detroit Lions currently sit at 1-6, the NFL’s worst record. Every other team except the 1-5-1 Houston Texans has managed two or more wins through the first eight weeks. How the Lions sunk to that point is a complex equation, but the combination of stats and figures leading there tells a pretty strong story.
