Oklahoma ranks inside ESPN’s top-10 recruiting classes after bowl season

ESPN’s Craig Haubert took a look at the nation’s recruiting classes following bowl season and the Sooners check in at No. 10.

One of the most encouraging signs to start the Brent Venables era at Oklahoma has been how the Sooners have been able to hold their 2022 recruiting class together and continue to add to it.

ESPN’s Craig Haubert took a look at the nation’s top 2022 recruiting classes following the conclusion of bowl season.

According to ESPN, the Sooners check in with the country’s No. 10 recruiting class right now.

Here’s what Haubert wrote about Oklahoma’s 2022 class.

The Sooners were competing for a top-five class, but the unexpected departure of Lincoln Riley has set this class back a bit. New hire Brent Venables and his staff, though, have the Sooners climbing back up the rankings and into the top ten. The Sooners have a top-10 running back on board in Sawchuk, a wiry back with a good blend of speed, power and agility. They also added late in the process Jovanate Barnes, out of Las Vegas, the same city former Sooner RB great and their current RB Coach Demarco Murray came out of. The new staff made its first key pickup in ESPN 300 QB Nick Evers, who won positional MVP at the Dallas Under Armour camp this past spring. To protect that offensive talent, they have secured multiple ESPN 300 commitments on the offensive line in OTs Jacob Sexton and Jake Taylor. The defense took a hit with several ESPN 300 front-seven prospects deciding to open up their recruitment, but there is still some strong talent on that side of the ball on board. Robert Spears-Jennings, a top in-state prospect with quick feet, could contribute on either side of the ball with upside as a defensive back. Williams gives them another versatile player; the fluid, speedy in-state prospect is projected to the secondary as well. – Haubert, ESPN.

According to ESPN, running back Gavin Sawchuk is Oklahoma’s top offensive player and defensive back Gentry Williams is the Sooners’ top defensive player in the 2022 class.

Again, it’s been a terrific start for Venables and his staff and Oklahoma ranking inside the nation’s top-10 recruiting classes is an indication of that.

Oklahoma quarterback signee Nick Evers announces NIL partnership with Make-A-Wish

Oklahoma quarterback signee Nick Evers announced his first NIL deal is a partnership with Make-A-Wish.

Oklahoma quarterback signee Nick Evers will have plenty of opportunities to profit off his name, image and likeness during his career with the Sooners. That comes with the territory of being a signal-caller in Norman.

In Evers’ first NIL partnership, though, the 6-foot-3, 187 pound quarterback doesn’t plan on collecting so much as a penny.

Evers announced on Wednesday that his first NIL partnership is with the Make-A-Wish foundation.

“I’m excited and privileged to announce my first NIL deal will benefit Make-A-Wish! I’m passionate about the mission, which is why 100% of the proceeds I help raise will go to kids with life threatening illnesses,” Evers wrote in his announcement.

In his tweet, Evers also shared the links to the Oklahoma Make-A-Wish and North Texas Make-A-Wish foundations.

Make-A-Wish’s mission is to create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.

In an evolving college football landscape that has many fans concerned that NIL opportunities have perhaps supplanted team goals, this is a nice reminder from Evers that positive, life-changing impacts can be made through NIL as well.

Evers’ announcement was met with an outpouring of support from fans and families whose lives’ have been impacted by Make-A-Wish.

The Flower Mound, Texas, product was one of the Sooners’ final additions to its 2022 signing class. Evers committed to Oklahoma on Dec. 13 and signed with OU on the first day of the Early Signing Period on Dec. 15.

Evers threw for nearly 5,000 yards, recorded 44 passing touchdowns and rushed for 18 touchdowns over the course of his junior and senior seasons.

Evers is a consensus four-star signee across all of the major recruiting services. According to On3’s rankings, Evers is the nation’s No. 67 player nationally and sixth-best quarterback in the 2022 class.

247Sports has Evers as the No. 123 player nationally, ESPN has him ranked No. 134 and Rivals has Evers at No. 239.

Evers joins recent commit and UCF transfer Dillon Gabriel, walk-on Ralph Rucker, former Penn State transfer Micah Bowens and Ben Harris as quarterbacks on the Sooners’ roster.

True freshman starting quarterback Caleb Williams announced earlier this week his intentions to enter the NCAA’s transfer portal so it remains to be seen whether or not he will return to Oklahoma.

247Sports spoke with Evers at the 2022 All-American Bowl before Williams announced his intentions to enter the transfer portal and before Gabriel committed to the Sooners.

Evers was asked about the possibility of joining the OU program without an established starting quarterback.

“You know, it’s a crazy thought actually. I have nothing wrong with being throw into the fire early. I’m going to work my butt off every single day. To get the opportunity to be able to see the field soon is a blessing. I just need to get ready for it,” Evers said. – Chris Hummer, 247Sports.

Oklahoma adds Cal OL transfer McKade Mettauer

Oklahoma picked up another transfer portal addition as Cal offensive lineman McKade Mettauer announced he has committed to the Sooners.

New Oklahoma head football coach Brent Venables said in his Early Signing Day press conference that he wouldn’t be bashful adding talent via the transfer portal.

The past two weeks have backed that statement up.

Former Cal offensive lineman McKade Mettauer announced this morning that he has committed to Oklahoma.

The 6-foot-4, 305 pound junior offensive lineman has played in all 29 of Cal’s games over the past three seasons and started 28 of those games for the Golden Bears at right guard.

Mettauer will have two years of eligibility remaining when he arrives at Oklahoma. The Woodlands, Texas, product signed with Cal in the 2019 class and was ranked as a three-star prospect according to 247Sports.

Mettauer earned All-Pac-12 second-team status from Pro Football Focus and he was also an honorable mention selection by the Pac-12 coaches for his play this season.

The junior was one of the key cogs that helped Cal’s offense record three 500-plus yard days of total offense this season (636 at Stanford, 534 vs. Sacramento State, 517 vs. Oregon State).

Mettauer and the Golden Bears’ offensive line also paved the way for four 200-plus yard rushing games for Cal this season (352 at Stanford, 255 vs. Oregon State, 246 vs. Sacramento State, 213 vs. Colorado).

It adds immediate, experienced depth for Venables and offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh to work with entering the 2022 season.

Oklahoma also secured a commitment from Missouri tight end Daniel Parker Jr. out of the transfer portal last week.

This marks the third year in a row that OU has brought in a transfer offensive lineman from the Pac-12. In 2020, Oklahoma added its current starter at right guard in Chris Murray from UCLA. Redshirt senior Robert Congel has played in seven games and started five at center for the Sooners this season since transferring in from Arizona.

Junior offensive tackle Wanya Morris transferred to Oklahoma from Tennessee and has played in six games for the Sooners this season.

Oklahoma has already signed a pair of four-star offensive tackles in its 2022 class, Jake Taylor from Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas, Nev., and Jacob Sexton from Deer Creek in Edmond, Okla.

247Sports’ Parker Thune also pointed out that Mettauer is the older brother of 2024 quarterback prospect Mabrey Mettauer.

It’s worth noting that Mettauer is also the brother of 2024 quarterback prospect Mabrey Mettauer, a 6-foot-5 pro-style passer who already holds offers from the likes of Florida, Arkansas, LSU, Miami and Arizona State. Is this an indication that the Sooners may extend an offer to the younger Mettauer down the road? Time will tell, but one way or another, the elder Mettauer figures to play an immediate role in stabilizing an Oklahoma offensive line that had its struggles in 2021. – Thune, 247Sports

Venables addressed his approach to adding players from the transfer portal on Dec. 15 during his Early Signing Period press conference.

“We’ve got tremendous numbers to continue to build our roster and meet our needs. There’s a number of positions on the team that through attrition and some of the things that have taken place, they need to be addressed sooner rather than later, so we are certainly looking at transfer options. We’ve spoken to a few already and trying to vet those guys.

“The biggest thing is trying to again bring value to our locker room. Certainly meet the needs that we have from a functional standpoint where maybe experience lacks or playmaking lacks, but it’s very important that we do a great job of vetting the type of people that we’re bringing into that locker room because we’re trying to build a culture and protect the culture, continue to enhance the culture. It starts with making good decisions with those people,” Venables said.

In the form of Daniel Parker Jr. from Missouri and McKade Mettauer from Cal, it appears the Sooners have already found a pair of transfer players that Venables feels adds to the culture he’s looking to build at Oklahoma.

2022 4-star Athlete Jaren Kanak officially decommits from Clemson

Four-star linebacker Jaren Kanak officially decommitted from Clemson. The Hays, Kan., product is headed to Oklahoma.

Four-star linebacker Jaren Kanak officially announced his decommitment from Clemson. The Hays, Kan., product is reportedly already enrolled at Oklahoma.

“First and foremost, I want to thank God for the abundance of opportunities I have been blessed with. I want to thank coach Swinney, and the entire Clemson staff for everything they have done for me, all the love they have shown, and the energy they invested into me and my family. After very extensive thoughts, prayers, and discussions with loved ones, I have decided to decommit from Clemson University. I have faith in God’s plan for me and with his guidance, I am excited to see what the future holds,” Kanak wrote in his announcement.

On3 ranks Kanak as the nation’s No. 75 player and the fifth-best linebacker prospect in the country. The 6-foot-2, 215 pound linebacker ranks as the No. 191 player in the On3 consensus rankings and the No. 252 player in the 247Sports composite player rankings.

According to 247Sports’ own player rankings, Kanak is listed a little higher as the nation’s No. 121 player and the nation’s sixth-best athlete.

On3 Director of Scouting Charles Power described what kind of player OU appears to be adding to its 2022 recruiting class.

One of the fastest players in the 2022 cycle, regardless of position. Has posted some scintillating track times, including a best of 10.37 seconds in the 100 meters. Plays quarterback for his high school but projects as a box defender and likely linebacker long term. Physically developed with a muscled-up build. Shows a very strong burst as a runner, getting to top speed quickly. Breaks off long runs with regularity and plays at a different speed than the competition. Also shows some considerable power and contact balance as a runner. Had a play where he ran over multiple defenders in the playoffs as a senior that went viral. Will need to adjust to defense and hone his coverage skills. May take a year or two to make the transition to defense but has high physical upside. Does not face strong competition in Kansas. – Power, On3

Kanak would join an Oklahoma recruiting class that already includes a pair of four-star linebacker signees in Kobie McKinzie (Lubbock, Texas) and Kip Lewis (Carthage, Texas).

Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables’ comments on the Sooners’ 2022 signing class

Oklahoma head football coach Brent Venables met with the media and commented on what the Sooners are adding in their 2022 signing class.

For a coach, each signing class is different and each is special. Oklahoma’s 2022 signing class will be a memorable one for Brent Venables because it’s his first signing class as a head coach.

Venables addressed the media and discussed what he and the Sooners have added in its “#ChampU22” signing class.

“It’s good to be off the road, finally take a deep breath. We’ve covered a lot of miles here over the last seven days in the recruiting trail. Really exciting about the 13 guys that we announced today that signed. We are waiting on a few other young men to announce here in the next 24 hours or so. I feel terrific about the group of young people that we’re bringing in and their families. I think that they represent the values that we also value,” Venables said.

OU signed players from six states with its class of 13. The class is currently comprised of seven offensive players and six defensive players. All 13 are high school players that are joining the program, so there aren’t any transfer additions yet.

Oklahoma signed offensive linemen Jacob Sexton and Jake Taylor, wide receivers Nicholas Anderson and Jayden Gibson, running back Gavin Sawchuk, tight end Jason Llewellyn and quarterback Nick Evers on offense.

Defensively, the Sooners signed defensive linemen Cedric Roberts and Alton Tarber, linebackers Kip Lewis and Kobie McKinzie and defensive backs Robert Spears-Jennings and Jayden Rowe.

“Just a group that again covers every level at every position outside of a specialty position. We’ve had three new additional commitments since we started the week initially recruiting. Just feel terrific about again as much as anything else the type of people that they are. They fit our philosophy and our locker room. The things that we value, they value as well,” Venables said.

Venables didn’t comment on all of the 13 signees specifically, but here’s a look at the comments he made about the four that he did address individually.

Kobie McKinzie, linebacker

Kobie McKinzie is rated as the nation’s No. 13 linebacker and 144th player overall in the 247Sports composite rankings. The four-star out of Lubbock-Cooper High School flipped back to the Sooners recently.

“First of all, Kobie’s just an incredibly bright young guy. Got a lot of life to him, huge personality. He’s a relationship-driven young guy, got a wonderful family, just a terrific story,” Venables said of McKinzie.

Venables indicated that McKinzie will be one of the founding blocks for his defense.

“Just really thankful for him. If you’re going to build a great defense, it starts up the middle, you know, inside, up front and at middle backer and with your safeties. You’ve got to be really strong up that middle. His presence, his size, his strength, his power, his physicality gives us a chance for exactly that,” Venables said.

4-star LB Kobie McKinzie details why he wound back up at Oklahoma

Four-star linebacker Kobie McKinzie caught up with KLBK sports director Arielle Schafer to detail why he flipped back to Oklahoma.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbz7cqqgxy50qwt player_id=none image=https://soonerswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Four-star linebacker Kobie McKinzie flipping back to Oklahoma electrified the Sooner fan base earlier this week.

It capped a whirlwind recruitment for McKinzie. The 6-foot-2, 245 pound linebacker out of Lubbock, Texas, initially committed to OU back on Jan. 15, 2020.

Then, after Lincoln Riley bolted Norman for USC, McKinzie reevaluated his decision. He decommitted from the Sooners on Nov. 28 and committed to Oklahoma’s arch rival in the Texas Longhorns on Dec. 5.

After a little over a week, McKinzie made the decision to flip back to Oklahoma.

McKinzie detailed his decision to rejoin the Sooners’ 2022 recruiting class with KLBK sports director Arielle Schafer.

“It means a lot. These have been some of the most stressful and overwhelming weeks of my life for sure. Everybody in the world doesn’t understand what it’s like to be in this position. Making my decision it wasn’t to persuade or to convince anybody of what I thought was going to, you know, push me to Oklahoma,” McKinzie said.

Naturally, new Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables was a big piece of the puzzle as to why McKinzie wound up back with Oklahoma.

“Brent Venables, his name speaks for itself. It truly does. He can go anywhere in the country any time, anywhere and ask for a job and he’s going to get hired. I promise you. Talking to him and with my family, you know, what he said to me and how he is, it meant a lot to me. He’s a relational guy. Most programs in the country are more so transactional and he wants to actually build a relationship with you. He’s a great guy, great human being. I want great people around me that love ball just like he does,” McKinzie said of Venables.

It’s clear Venables’ message is resonating with McKinzie, because it sounds eerily similar to what Venables had to say during his introductory ceremony inside the Everest Indoor Center.

“Everything that we do in our program, every decision that I have to make, that we have to make is going to be about what’s best for the players. Everything. If in fact the program is about the players, then every decision that we make is about what’s best for you. As I told them in the team meeting today, sometimes what’s best for the players, the players don’t like, but what we do is going to be in your best interest. The purpose of our program, we’re going to take a holistic approach. We’re going to find every way possible, every means possible to serve your heart and not your talent. That’s real. That’s relational, not transactional,” Venables said.

As of publication time, securing McKinzie’s commitment was part of helping OU leapfrog into the nation’s No. 9 recruiting class nationally according to 247Sports’ composite team rankings.

4-star linebacker Kobie McKinzie flips commitment back to Oklahoma

Four-star linebacker Kobie McKinzie announced that he has flipped his commitment from Texas back to Oklahoma.

In a matter of hours, Oklahoma’s 2022 recruiting class has leapfrogged all the way up to No. 13 nationally according to the 247Sports composite team rankings.

That’s thanks in part to class of 2022 linebacker Kobie McKinzie announcing today that he’s flipped his commitment back to Oklahoma.

It’s been a whirlwind of late in the recruitment of McKinzie.

McKinzie had committed to the Sooners all the way back on Jan. 15 of 2020. McKinzie took an official visit to Oklahoma this past summer on June 18.

Then, after Lincoln Riley left Oklahoma to become USC’s head coach, McKinzie decommitted from Oklahoma on Nov. 28 and subsequently flipped his commitment to Texas on Dec. 5.

Now, a little over a week later, McKinzie is back committed with the Crimson and Cream.

The Lubbock, Texas, product is a consensus four-star linebacker. McKinzie is rated as the No. 13 linebacker and No. 144 player overall in the 2022 class according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

In the Rivals rankings, McKinzie checks in as the nation’s No. 6 inside linebacker and No. 166 player nationally.

247Sports’ Gabe Brooks evaluated McKinzie on Nov. 5 and had this to say about McKinzie.

Possesses adequate height with advanced mass at this stage of development. College-ready size as an off-ball linebacker, but may outgrow the position given high school size, despite not being overly long. Very stout base with upper-body space to continue to add mass. Almost exclusively an off-ball linebacker in high school, but has gotten limited reps at edge. Consistently strong tackler who finishes strikes and flashes impact arriving pop. Best when playing downhill. Impressive in forward pursuit with athleticism to chase to perimeter in many scenarios. Possesses the size and strength to take on blocks and play through action in the box. Linear pursuit ability suggests intriguing potential as a blitzer. Occasionally arrives high as a tackler. Has coverage experience but must prove requisite coverage ability against high-major skill players. Will need to maximize fluidity, lateral twitch, and body control to reach ceiling in coverage situations. Again, most comfortable playing forward, and size could dictate full-time move to the edge or as a hand-on-the-ground player, depending on scheme and personnel packaging. Power Five-caliber front seven defender whose best fit will be subject to scheme. High-floor physical traits with proven production and playmaking ability against good high school competition. Projects to the high-major level as a throwback off-ball linebacker or an edge-setting line-of-scrimmage hybrid who could become a matchup problem with pass-rushing technical development. Potential to become an impact player with a long-term ceiling beyond college. – Brooks, 247Sports

Brooks, 247Sports’ Midlands Region recruiting analyst, has the Baltimore Ravens’ Daelin Hayes as McKinzie’s player comparison.

The Sooners also secured a commitment earlier today from four-star quarterback Nick Evers out of Flower Mound, Texas.

McKinzie hinted that there could be more good news on deck for Oklahoma shortly after he announced his commitment to the Sooners.

McKinzie tweeted, “oh and I’m not coming back by myself!”

With the Early Signing Period set to begin this Wednesday, Dec. 15, there should be plenty more recruiting news to follow with Oklahoma.

247Sports reporter flips crystal-ball projection for Jaren Kanak to Oklahoma

Ryan Wallace of 247Sports’ GoPowercat flipped his crystal-ball prediction for four-star athlete Jaren Kanak to the Oklahoma Sooners.

In the wake of former Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley’s sudden departure to USC, several decommitments have rocked Sooner Nation over the past couple weeks. The most recent was five-star defensive lineman Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy who flipped from Oklahoma to Texas A&M.

Brownlow-Dindy is rated as the nation’s No. 3 defensive lineman and No. 8 player overall in the 2022 class according to 247Sports.

With Brent Venables officially announced as Oklahoma’s new head football coach, there could potentially be some good news on the horizon, though.

247Sports’ Ryan Wallace of GoPowercat.com flipped his crystal ball prediction for four-star athlete Jaren Kanak from Clemson to Oklahoma.

Kanak ranks as the No. 6 athlete and 120th player nationally according to 247Sports’ Class of 2022 rankings. The 6-foot-2, 210 pound product from Hays, Kan., is the top-rated player in the Sunflower state.

Kanak committed to Clemson back on July 30. Here’s what Catch It Kansas wrote about Kanak’s decision at the time.

Kanak’s recruiting took off following a standout showing at the Sharp Performance combine in 2020, and continued through a strong performance in running the second fastest 100 time (10.37) in all of Kansas during track season. Now a 4-star recruit according to both Rivals and 247 Sports, the 6-2 athlete is headed to play for another Kansas native in Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables. Also a receiver and returner for the Indians, most recruiting services project him as a linebacker or safety at the collegiate level.

Kanak chose the Tigers over 34 other schools, including Alabama, Oklahoma, Michigan, USC, and in-state schools Kansas and Kansas State. He visited the Tigers on the first official day of the recruiting period opening up following extended time without school visits due to the pandemic.

The number 8 athlete in the country, Kanak has drawn comparisons to another Kansas native in Isaiah Simmons. The Olathe native helped lead the Tiger defense to a National Championship before being selected in the top ten of the 2020 NFL Draft. – Catch It Kansas staff

It’s no certain thing that Kanak winds up at Oklahoma. He’s still committed to Clemson right now. However, Venables was the lead recruiter for Kanak, so his decision to become Oklahoma’s new head coach could open the door for the Sooners to pull off a late recruiting flip of their own.

Four-star offensive lineman Jake Taylor ‘100% committed’ to Oklahoma Sooners

Four-star offensive lineman Jake Taylor out of Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas, Nev., is the latest recruit to reaffirm his commitment to Oklahoma.

Lincoln Riley’s departure from Oklahoma to USC has left the Sooners’ 2022 and 2023 recruiting classes in flux.

Count class of 2022 offensive lineman Jake Taylor as solidly still in the committed to Oklahoma camp.

OU running backs coach DeMarco Murray went out to see Taylor for his birthday and the Bishop Gorman product out of Las Vegas, Nev., tweeted that he was still on board with the Sooners after the visit.

“Just wanted to say thank you for all of the birthday wishes yesterday. It ended with a great night with @DeMarcoMurray. I told him that I am still, and always will be 100% committed to the University of Oklahoma. #ChampU22,” Taylor wrote on Twitter.

It’s also of note that Taylor tagged OU offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh in the picture that he sent out with his tweet.

Many have been wondering whether or not Bedenbaugh would follow Riley to USC. Taylor’s tweet is perhaps one indication that Bedenbaugh may be planning to stay on staff at Oklahoma.

Taylor is rated as a four-star offensive lineman by both 247Sports and Rivals. According to the 247Sports composite rankings, Taylor is the nation’s No. 16 offensive tackle and the 159th-ranked player nationally.

247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong also recently reported that Taylor declined an in-home visit and official visit invitation from Riley and USC.

Taylor helped guide Bishop Gorman to the Nevada state title this year and he will complete his high school career in January when he competes at the All-American Bowl in San Antonio and the Polynesian Bowl in Honolulu.

247Sports’ Blair Angulo wrote this about Taylor’s physical traits.

With a long, projectable frame that continues to take on additional muscle mass, Taylor touts one of the more impressive builds among the line prospects out West in the 2022 class. He looks remarkably rock-solid throughout his physique, with the body composition that should allow him to continue to maintain flexibility as he gets bigger at the next level.

Taylor is an athletic and mobile offensive tackle with positional versatility. He has shifted to right tackle this season in order to protect Gorman’s left-handed quarterback, yet still looks comfortable and agile coming out of his stance. He flashes polished technique as a run blocker, sealing the edge and opening holes by maintaining leverage. Taylor shows a fiery punch at the point of attack and the aggressiveness to push back defenders. He plays through the whistle and displays nonstop intensity.

From a technique standpoint, Taylor does well to keep his arms extended through initial contact. He shows active feet and awareness in pass protection. Athletically, Taylor does a good job of reaching the second level whenever he pulls, giving him the potential to contribute at multiple spots in college. He gets territorial on passing downs and looks potent against speed rushers. Although flexible and able to bend, Taylor could continue to work on his lateral quickness. – Angulo, 247Sports

Here’s a full look at all of the players that have reaffirmed their commitments to Oklahoma since Riley’s departure.
