2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship best value prop bets for 3 golfers

Three golfers to profit on at the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship, with PGA Tour picks, predictions and best bets.

The FedEx Cup playoffs tees off Thursday with the 1st event — the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship — at TPC Southwind in Memphis. Below, we look at the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions.

Most of the top-125 golfers in the FedExCup standings are in the field including Rory McIlroy (No. 1 in Golfweek/Sagarin rankings), last year’s FedExCup champion Patrick Cantlay (No. 2), FedExCup standings leader Scottie Scheffler (No. 3 in Golfweek) and many more.

TPC Southwind is a par 70 that plays at 7,243 yards and the top 70 advance to the 2nd round of the FedExCup playoffs, the BMW Championship at Wilmington Country Club in Wilmington, Del.

Hideki Matsuyama

There are 17 golfers in this field with better odds than Matsuyama, which is “recency bias” considering Matsuyama was in the top-10 of the FedExCup standings until Sungjae Im moved ahead of him with a T-2 at last weekend’s Wyndham Championship.

Matsuyama has 2 victories this season on the PGA Tour, 6 top-10 finishes, 9 top-20 finishes and is 11th in the FedExCup standings entering the playoffs.

Matsuyama finished T-2 in last year’s St. Jude’s Invitational and lost in a 3-way playoff with Sam Burns to former PGA golfer Abraham Ancer. Granted, the 2021 St. Jude’s Invitational was a 65-golfer event but Matsuyama crushed TPC Southwind last year.

Finally, Matsuyama is 8th according to my numbers courtesy of FantasyNational.com with the 10th-most Opportunities Gained and 10th-best Strokes Gained (SG): Par 4. TPC Southwind has 12 Par 4 holes.

  • $12.50 for winner (+4000) to earn a $500 profit
  • $12.50 for top-5 finish (+750) to earn a $93.75 profit
  • $25 for top-10 finish (+350) to earn a $87.50 profit
  • $100 for top-20 finish (+210) to earn a $210 profit

Jon Rahm

This is a buy-low spot for Rahm who has the 8th-best odds in this field. Rahm didn’t finish in the top-10 of any major this season and his only victory came at the Mexico Open, which had one of tour’s softest fields.

But Rahm has missed only 1 cut this season and is the 3rd-best ball-striker in this field in his last 50 rounds, per FantasyNational.com. Also, Rahm is 1st in Greens-in-regulation (GIRs) Gained and 7th in SG: Par 4 over this span.

Even though Rahm’s 2021-22 PGA season has been a dud, you have to take Rahm at 20-1 or better whenever you get the chance.

  • $12.50 for winner (+2000) to earn a $250 profit
  • $25 for top-5 finish (+425) to earn a $106.25 profit
  • $25 for top-10 finish (+220) to earn a $55 profit
  • $100 for top-20 finish (+105) to earn a $105 profit

[tipico]

Billy Horschel

Let’s take a shot with Billy Ho despite him not popping on my model and ranking just 32nd in SG in this field over the last 24 rounds, according to FantasyNational.com. But, Billy Ho has the 4th-most expected PGA wins, according to DataGolf.com.

Horschel has the 3rd-best SG in this field at TPC Southwind over the last 50 rounds. Also, Bermuda greens are Horschel’s best putting surface and he ranks 5th in the field at SG: Putting on firm and fast greens, which TPC Southwind has.

On top of that, Horschel is 9th in GIRs Gained in this field, 8th in SG: Par 4 and 4th in Par 4 Efficiency: 450-500 over his last 50 rounds.

Lastly, Billy Ho’s lone win this season was at the Memorial, which had the 5th-strongest strength of field on the tour this season, per DataGolf.com.

  • $12.50 for winner (+4000) to earn a $500 profit
  • $12.50 for top-5 finish (+900) to earn a $112.50 profit
  • $25 for top-10 finish (+400) to earn a $100 profit
  • $100 for top-20 finish (+210) to earn a $210 profit

2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship odds, picks and PGA Tour predictions

Analyzing the golf odds to win the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship odds, picks and PGA Tour predictions.

The FedExCup playoffs have finally arrived and begin this week with the top 125 players facing off in the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship. The playoffs run for 3 weeks, cutting the field size each step of the way. Things will start with Thursday’s first round at TPC Southwind in Memphis.

Below, we look at the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions.

Many of the top players on tour have taken some time off since the Open Championship, but this is a loaded field in Memphis. Scottie Scheffler is No. 1 in the FedExCup standings and is among the favorites along with Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Cameron Smith and Patrick Cantlay.

Tony Finau has shot up the standings with victories in his last 2 starts, giving him the 8th-best odds to win in Memphis.

TPC Southwind isn’t a terribly long course at 7,243 yards, but it’s also a par 70. This will be the first time Southwind hosts a playoff event after the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational was previously played here. The course was renovated in 2020, and most of the work was done to the bunkers throughout the course.

FedEx St. Jude Championship – Expert picks

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Monday at 7:26 p.m. ET.

Rory McIlroy (+900)

McIlroy hasn’t played since his heartbreaking finish at the Open Championship in mid-July, but he’s not a player who tees it up every week to stay fresh anyway. When he has played, he’s been arguably the best on the planet. Here are his last 8 starts: 2nd, 5th, 8th, T-18, 1st, T-5, T-19 and 3rd.

He tied for 12th at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude last year at this same course and has had 7 top-10s in the St. Jude Invitational, including a win in 2014. He should pick up right where he left off, though I would like to see his odds a little bit longer.

Justin Thomas (+1500)

Thomas hasn’t been playing particularly well as of late, finishing no better than T-37 in his last 3 starts. But this is a course he’s had success on before, winning the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational in 2020 and also in 2018. He tied for 26th last year, but this is a course that typically favors strong iron players, and Thomas is exactly that.

This could be the week he starts to heat up.

Xander Schauffele (+1500)

It’s easy to forget how dominant Schauffele was before taking a little break following the Open Championship. He won the Travelers Championship and the Scottish Open in back-to-back starts, followed by a T-15 at St. Andrews. In his last 8 starts, he hasn’t finished worse than T-18.

At +1500, he feels like a pretty good value.

FedEx St. Jude Championship picks – Contenders

Russell Henley (+5000)

Henley has made some noise in the last 2 weeks with a T-10 and T-5 in his  most recent starts, utilizing excellent ball striking and iron play to keep himself in the mix both weeks. He now ranks 2nd on tour in Strokes Gained: Approach the green and 11th tee-to-green.

Though he hasn’t played in the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational before, this course suits his game.

Adam Scott (+10000)

It’s somewhat surprising to see Scott’s name so far down the board at +10000. Sure, he went T-37 and T-76 in his last 2 starts, but he tied for 14th at the U.S. Open and 15th at the Open Championship against 2 loaded fields.

He’s steady with his irons, ranking 39th in SG: Approach the green, and he’s had success on this course before with a T-13 in 2017 and T-10 in 2016 in the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.

FedEx St. Jude Championship picks – Long shots

Sahith Theegala (+10000)

Being a PGA Tour rookie, this will be Theegala’s 1st time in the FedExCup playoffs. There could be some nerves to shake off, but he doesn’t always play like a rookie. His recent “struggles” haven’t been terribly worrisome, either, missing the cut just once since May and finishing T-57 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic due to a pair of 73s on the weekend.

Aaron Rai (+20000)

Ignore the fact that Rai missed the cut at both the Scottish Open and Open Championship because those were 2 links-style events. This week is much different. He shot a 3-over 73 on Sunday at the Wyndham Championship to finish T-71 but his third-round 66 was encouraging to see.

He tied for 12th at TPC Southwind in 2020 and T-26 last year.
