Oklahoma Sooners land 2022 defensive tackle Alton Tarber out of Florida

The Oklahoma Sooners landed a commitment from three-star defensive tackle Alton Tarber out of Deerfield Beach, Florida.

Brent Venables is picking up steam and he’s picking it up fast. The new Sooners head coach made immediate offers the Monday after he signed his contract with the Oklahoma Sooners and sent one to 2022 defensive tackle Alton Tarber out of Deerfield Beach, Florida.

Tarber announced his commitment to Oklahoma in a post via his Twitter page. His recruitment moved along very fast due to Venables’ connection with Tarber while the defensive coordinator at Clemson and Tarber camping at Clemson.

Tarber had been committed to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets since August and seemed fairly set in his recruitment. Venables sent out an offer upon his first full day as Oklahoma’s head coach and things sped up in a hurry. New Sooners’ defensive ends coach Miguel Chavis visited Tarber in Florida and that led to Tarber taking an official visit to Oklahoma where it seems things went well.

Days after his visit he de-committed from Georgia Tech and completed the flip to Oklahoma by announcing his commitment.

Tarber isn’t highly recruited but he’s a mountain of a young man. Standing at 6-foot-2 and hovering around 300 pounds as a high school senior.

The Sooners certainly are deviating from the previous regime’s player scouting. While the previous regime was quick to shy away from the hefty interior linemen in exchange for speed, Brent Venables is embracing them as he always has.

Tarber likely projects as a true nose tackle or space-eater in the interior to take on blocks in the run game in order to open lanes for linebackers to run free thru gaps and make plays. He fills a role as the Sooners will lose a few bodies on the interior over the next few years.

This isn’t a flashy highly ranked recruit but it’s one where the Sooners coaching staff is going all-in on trusting their eyes and hoping what they saw can be shaped into a dominant interior monster on their new-look defense. Tarber’s commitment brings Oklahoma to number 10 on 247Sports composite team rankings for this 2022 cycle.

Brent Venables makes first offer as Oklahoma head coach to 2022 defensive tackle

Getting the party started, new head coach Brent Venables sends a scholarship offer to 2022 defensive tackle prospect out of Florida.

The Brent Venables era is off and running on the recruiting trail. After yesterday’s introductory event in Norman, Venables hit the road and has been visiting with players to continue to bolster the 2022 recruiting class.

In the wake of Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy’s de-commitment and flip to Texas A&M, Venables, and the Oklahoma Sooners sent out their first official offer to Ahmad Moten, a three-star defensive tackle from Florida.

According to 247Sports, Moten is a 6-3, 290-pound defensive tackle who helped Cardinal Gibbons win a 4A state title in 2020.

Yesterday, in his first press conference as head coach, Venables hammered home the idea that he wants the offers that Oklahoma sends out to mean something, to have value. They aren’t planning to offer kids just to give offers and want the players they offer scholarships to be team-first players who aren’t simply looking for individual accolades.

Venables defenses are physical at the point of attack, and that starts with interior defensive linemen that can disrupt the running game and crash the pocket in the passing game. Moten has the size and length to be able to do both.

It’s still early in Brent Venables’ tenure as head coach, but it’s no coincidence that the first official scholarship offer he made was to an interior defensive lineman. That’s where Venables wants to set the tone defensively. With the early signing period right around the corner, Moten would provide a boost to a recruiting class that needs some players on the defensive line.

2022 Five-star defensive tackle narrows list to final 2 schools

Top defensive line target from the 2022 recruiting target narrowed his list to two schools.

The Oklahoma Sooners have an up and down recruiting cycle for the 2022 class. They’ve secured commitments from the two of the top running backs in the class and have some of the best offensive linemen and tight ends in the country on track to join the Sooners in 2022. They’ve added top-tier talent to their defense in Derrick Moore and Kobie McKenzie as well. It’s a class that’s strong on paper despite the decomittments of Jordan Hudson, Talyn Shettron, and Luther Burden.

The Sooners look to be in great shape for another top tier defensive recruit in the 2022 recruiting cycle as Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy has narrowed his list to two schools according to Hayes Fawcett of On3 Sports.

Alex Grinch has helped the Oklahoma Sooners defense return to national relevance, which has them on target to land some of the best defensive players in the 2022 recruiting cycle. If they’re able to land Brownlow-Dindy as the 247Sports Crystal Ball is projecting, it would be another huge feather in the cap for the Alex Grinch, Calvin Thibodeaux, and head coach Lincoln Riley.

247Sports Recruiting Analyst Andrew Ivins had this to say about Brownlow-Dindy.

Encouraging, well-proportioned build. Up and over 6-foot-2, 270 pounds. Spent part of youth doing Mixed Martial Arts. Posted elite testing numbers for an interior defensive lineman the summer before his junior season. Explodes off the ball with the first-step quickness to invade gaps. Coordinated athlete that doesn’t lose his balance or bearing easily. Understands how to bend and use leverage. Keeps feet moving and plays with steady energy. Mauling tackler with the grip strength to corral ball carriers. Totaled 29.5 tackles for a loss and 11.5 sacks as a sophomore while playing in the Sunshine State’s second-highest classification. Can win with a simple bull rush at the point of attack, but will also swim his way past blockers. Ability to just fire out of his stance and uncoil, however, might be his best pass-rushing attribute. Athletic profile is one of the best in the class of 2022 for his position, but still areas where he can improve his game, like when it comes to disengaging from double teams. Figures to be an impact player at a Power 5 program and someone that’s eventually selected early on in the NFL Draft.

Sooners offer four-star defensive tackle from Flower Mound, Texas

Sooners offer four-star defensive tackle from the DFW area.

Just a couple of days after losing out on North Shore defensive tackle Kristopher Ross, the Oklahoma Sooners set their sights on another defensive tackle prospect. According to Jadon Scarlett, the Sooners and defensive line coach Calvin Thibodeaux offered the Coram Deo Academy product on Wednesday.

Scarlett would likely need to bulk up a bit to play inside for Oklahoma, he could stay on the outside and play strong-side defensive end.
