Oklahoma Sooners receive crystal ball for transfer wide receiver Tre Harris

The Oklahoma Sooners earned a crystal ball prediction for Louisiana Tech transfer WR Tre Harris from Brandon Drumm of OUInsider.

In the early stages of the 2022-2023 transfer portal, one thing became abundantly clear. The Oklahoma Sooners were looking to add a wide receiver with bona fide production at the collegiate level.

With several offers out there, it appears Oklahoma has zeroed in on Louisiana Tech transfer wide receiver Tre Harris. Brandon Drumm of OUInsider at 247Sports issued a crystal ball on Tuesday projecting Harris to the Oklahoma Sooners.

Harris, a former high school quarterback, is 6 feet, 2 inches and weighs just over 200 pounds. Over the last two seasons with the Bulldogs, Harris has averaged more than 14 yards per reception and scored 14 touchdowns, including 10 in 2022.

In 2022, the former three-star wide receiver caught 65 passes for 935 yards and those 10 touchdowns.

Harris was primarily an outside receiver for Lousiana Tech and did most of his damage within 20 yards of the line of scrimmage. According to Pro Football Focus, Harris caught 43 of 72 targets in the short to the intermediate passing game for 541 yards and seven touchdowns. He had some success down the field, catching 9 of 18 targets 20-plus yards down the field for 311 yards and two touchdowns.

He did get some action at or behind the line of scrimmage, catching all 12 of his targets for 73 yards and a touchdown. Harris led La. Tech in first-down receptions and was ninth in Conference USA with 37.

An All-Conference USA first-team selection, Harris was sixth in the conference in yards and tied for third in touchdowns.

Harris would be a strong addition to the Oklahoma Sooners’ wide receiver room whether Marvin Mims returns or not. His size and presence would give Dillon Gabriel and Jeff Lebby a guy that can help move the chains on offense, something they struggled to do with any consistency in 2022.

Tre Harris has two more years of eligibility but would be an immediate difference-maker for the Sooners in 2023.

Oklahoma Sooners winners last week with hot start in the transfer portal per ESPN

With big-time moves on both sides of the ball, ESPN dubbed Oklahoma winners for their early work in the transfer portal.

One week does not an offseason make, but the Oklahoma Sooners got off to a great start in the transfer portal. With [autotag]Jacob Lacey[/autotag] already locked in, the Sooners brought back former tight end [autotag]Austin Stogner[/autotag] and landed the top edge rusher in the transfer class, [autotag]Dasan McCullough[/autotag].

That start earned the Sooners mention in last week’s recap of the portal from ESPN’s Tom VanHaaren.

The Sooners are a winner for bettering the offense with tight end Austin Stogner, who transferred to South Carolina last year but will return to Norman for 2023, and the defense with Indiana linebacker Dasan McCullough, a former top-50 recruit who wreaked havoc for the Hoosiers’ defense in 2022. And while it doesn’t count toward the portal, the staff also landed a commitment from McCullough’s younger brother, Daeh, an ESPN 300 safety in the 2023 class. – VanHaaren, ESPN

The addition of McCullough provides the Sooners with a player that can either take over at Cheetah or mix in immediately with their EDGE rotation. A former safety, McCullough led the Indiana Hoosiers with four sacks and was third in tackles for loss with 6.5. As a true freshman. His length and athleticism will create nightmares for opposing offensive coordinators.

On the other side of the ball, Austin Stogner returns with an opportunity to put up a career year in Jeff Lebby’s offense, just like [autotag]Brayden Willis[/autotag] did in 2022.

Stogner, arguably a better receiver, should thrive with a full-time role after sharing tight end/H-back duties each of the last two seasons. He had just 26 targets with the Sooners in 2021 but recorded three touchdowns. That’s a touchdown every 8.67 targets. With seven touchdowns on 53 targets, Willis had a TD every 7.57 targets. That’s a lower rate, but with [autotag]Theo Wease[/autotag] gone and more of a full-time opportunity, Stogner could experience a similar breakout as his former teammate Willis.

With little experience at the tight end position as Oklahoma looks toward 2023, the Sooners needed to add a veteran presence. And tight ends coach [autotag]Joe Jon Finley[/autotag] brought in a familiar face.

Oklahoma still has some work to do in the portal as they look to lock up their recruiting class. But if their first week in the transfer portal is any indication, the Sooners will be in great shape.

With Dasan McCullough commitment, Sooners lead 247Sports transfer portal rankings

With commitments from Jacob Lacey, Austin Stogner, and Dasan McCullough, the Sooners lead 247Sports transfer portal rankings. From @john9williams

Oklahoma is off to a hot start in the transfer portal after earning a commitment from the top edge in the portal, [autotag]Dasan McCullough[/autotag]. With the commitments of McCullough, [autotag]Austin Stogner[/autotag] and [autotag]Jacob Lacey[/autotag], the Sooners are No. 1 in 247Sports transfer portal rankings.

Brent Venables and his staff will continue to be active in the portal as they look to improve a defense that was one of the worst in the nation in 2022. The additions of McCullough and Lacey are a start. Given the departures of linebackers [autotag]David Ugwoegbu[/autotag] and [autotag]DaShaun White[/autotag], the Sooners might need to add a veteran presence at linebacker.

The Sooners have been very active at wide receiver, pursuing five pass catchers from across the country. It could be [autotag]Marvin Mims[/autotag] will indeed pursue the NFL or simply that the Sooners aren’t thrilled with their depth behind Mims (if he returns). They’re targeting productive, Day 1 contributors and players with upside.

Offensive line transfer portal additions have been good to the Sooners the last couple of seasons. They have received strong play from [autotag]Chris Murray[/autotag], [autotag]McKade Mettauer[/autotag] and [autotag]Wanya Morris[/autotag]. With Anton Harrison, Murray and Morris off to the NFL, the Sooners could afford to add some competition to their young talent.

In the early stages of the transfer portal, the Oklahoma Sooners lead the nation in 247Sports team transfer portal rankings with the additions of their three former four-star players. Expect Oklahoma to stay at or near the top as they continue to portal shop this holiday season.

Here’s a look at the top 11.

Oklahoma Sooners attempting to solidify the WR position through the transfer portal

The Oklahoma Sooners have made it clear that they need help at the wide receiver position through their transfer portal targets.

It’s been quite noticeable that the Oklahoma Sooners have been targeting wide receivers in the transfer portal. They’ve offered Ra Ra Thomas (Auburn), Dante Cephas (Kent State), Tre Harris (Louisiana Tech), Dorian Singer (Arizona) and Xavier Guillory (Idaho State).

It’s clear the Oklahoma Sooners believe they need to add one or more wide receivers to the depth chart.

Though there hasn’t been any indication from [autotag]Marvin Mims[/autotag] regarding his future, there’s a chance he could return to the Oklahoma Sooners for his senior season. He’s playing in the Cheez-It Bowl against Florida State, but after his first 1,000-yard season, he could determine he’s ready to make the leap to the NFL. At the same time, duplicating that production in 2023 could put him in an even better standing among NFL scouts and general managers for 2024.

As things stand, [autotag]Drake Stoops[/autotag], [autotag]Jalil Farooq[/autotag], [autotag]J.J. Hester[/autotag] and [autotag]LV Bunkley-Shelton[/autotag] are the most experienced wide receivers on the roster if Mims were to depart for the NFL. None of those guys has been a lead wide receiver or has the production to match what Mims did in 2022. Farooq has flashed the ability, but he’s also had some head-scratching performances in his first full season as a starter.

Stoops is a good wide receiver, but not necessarily someone that will earn 100-plus targets. Hester and Bunkley-Shelton barely saw the field in 2022.

Then there’s [autotag]Jayden Gibson[/autotag] and [autotag]Nicholas Anderson[/autotag], two highly regarded wide receivers from the 2022 recruiting class. They didn’t see the field much either: Gibson saw 92 snaps in six games and Anderson 11 snaps in three games. Gibson had five targets but caught just one. Anderson didn’t see a pass come his way.

So when it comes down to it, Farooq and Stoops, if he returns for one more year, are the only receivers that Oklahoma can feel good about going into the 2023 offseason. Gibson and Anderson may emerge as lead wide receivers in the Sooners’ offense, but is the coaching staff at a point where they feel like they can rely upon them for 50 or more targets in 2023?

With the offers they’ve put out there, it appears the Sooners coaching staff wants to create competition at the position and see who emerges with a starting role in September.

If Marvin Mims returns, the Sooners will have one of the best wide receivers and wide receiver groups in the Big 12. If he jets off to the NFL, they’ll be left with a question mark at the position. They’re trying to make sure they have multiple answers to the problem at wide receiver moving forward.

Several Oklahoma targets rank among ESPN’s best transfer portal players

Where did Oklahoma’s transfer targets rank among ESPN’s best in the transfer portal?

Retooling through the transfer portal has become an important part of roster turnover for every football team in America. In large part due to the portal, but also because of graduation and NFL draft losses, it’s become imperative to attack the portal looking for talent.

In Brent Venables first offseason, the Sooners added difference makers Dillon Gabriel, Jeffery Johnson, Jonah La’ulu, and C.J. Coldon. They’ll hope to do it again this offseason with needs at nearly every position group on the depth chart.

The Sooners have been active, extending offers to wide receivers, tight ends, and defensive linemen. It remains to be seen who will be Sooners this spring, but several of their targets appeared on ESPN’s ranking of the top transfer portal players. Let’s take a look at what Tom VanHaaren of ESPN had to say about each Oklahoma target (ESPN+) and where they rank on his list.

Oklahoma Sooners targeting a pair of wide receivers in the transfer portal

Oklahoma is looking to add to their wide receiver ranks with offers to a couple of transfer portal wideouts, RaRa Thomas and Dante Cephas. From @john9williams

As the transfer portal officially opened on Monday, the Oklahoma Sooners saw some depth walk out the door. Mostly, it’s been players that saw little to no playing time for Oklahoma in 2022, but at wide receiver, they’ve seen a bit more attrition.

[autotag]Theo Wease[/autotag] made it known last week he’d be entering the portal, and on Monday, [autotag]Brian Darby[/autotag] and [autotag]Trevon West[/autotag] also put their names in the transfer portal.

With the college football world doing some portal shopping, it looks like the Sooners are targeting a couple of wide receivers early in the process. Oklahoma offered Mississippi State transfer wide receiver [autotag]RaRa Thomas[/autotag] and Kent State wideout [autotag]Dante Cephas[/autotag].

Thomas was a three-star prospect in the 2021 cycle and put up 44 receptions for 626 yards and seven touchdowns for the Bulldogs in 2022. Cephas was also a three-star player in the 2019 class and recorded 48 receptions for 744 yards and three touchdowns.

Cephas had four receptions for 50 yards against Oklahoma in week two of the season, but his high moment came against Ohio, where he posted 13 receptions for 246 yards and a touchdown.

Thomas posted 5 receptions for 134 yards and a touchdown in a win against Texas A&M, went for 8 and 73 against Alabama, and recorded six catches for 84 yards and two touchdowns against Auburn.

Though [autotag]Marvin Mims[/autotag] is playing in the bowl game, there’s a strong possibility that’s his last for the Sooners with an NFL draft decision looming. If Mims were to declare for the draft, that would leave Oklahoma with [autotag]Jalil Faroo[/autotag]q and [autotag]Drake Stoops[/autotag] as the only Sooners wide receivers to play significant snaps in Norman.

The Sooners added [autotag]J.J. Hester[/autotag] and [autotag]L.V. Bunkley-Shelton[/autotag] in the portal late last spring, but they didn’t see the field much, so it’s difficult to know where they stand with the coaching staff. Both have experience from their previous stops and have playmaking ability, but Oklahoma would be wise to add some more depth.

Oklahoma will have quite a few young guys competing for snaps, like [autotag]Nic Anderson[/autotag], [autotag]Jayden Gibson[/autotag], and Freeman, along with incoming freshmen [autotag]Keyon Brown[/autotag] and [autotag]Jaquaize Pettaway[/autotag] (assuming they sign).

We’ll see if Oklahoma’s able to close on either Cephas or Thomas, but it’s clear they believe they need to add some wide receiver depth in the portal this offseason to put them in a better position to contend in 2023.

Oklahoma projected to land Indiana Hoosiers edge Dasan McCullough via the transfer portal

With the transfer portal officially open, the Oklahoma Sooners look to be the favorites to land Indiana Hoosiers transfer EDGE Dasan McCullough. From @john9williams

On the same day the Oklahoma Sooners received crystal ball projections flipping 2023 four-star safety Daeh McCullough from Cincinnati to Oklahoma, it looks like another McCullough may be joining the Sooners in 2023.

OUInsiders Brandon Drumm and Parker Thune issued crystal ball predictions for Indiana edge rusher [autotag]Dasan McCullough[/autotag] to land with the Oklahoma Sooners through the transfer portal.

Dasan and [autotag]Daeh McCullough[/autotag] are the sons of Notre Dame running backs coach Deland McCullough, who played alongside Sooners cornerbacks coach Jay Valai with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Dasan McCullough was a four-star edge in the 2022 recruiting class, ranking No. 75 in the nation in the 247Sports composite. He was the No. 9 edge in the class and the No. 2 player in the state of Indiana.

As a true freshman season, Dasan played in all 12 games for the Hoosiers and racked up 49 total tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, and four sacks, which tied for the team lead. He was second among edge rushers in defensive snaps according to Pro Football Focus and finished third on the team with 19 total pressures. At 6-foot-5 and 235 pounds, McCullough would bring great size and athleticism to the defensive end room.

With pressure being an issue for the Sooners in 2022, adding a player that was able to make an immediate impact for the Hoosiers pass rush in his first season would be huge for the Oklahoma Sooners.

[lawrence-related id=76867]

Here’s what Jacob Rude of the “Locked On Hoosiers” podcast had to say about Dasan McCullough.

He’s a versatile, uber-athletic player. When John Garcia (Sports Illustrateds director of national recruiting) came on to talk about him, he called him a “monster back” which is a phrase I love. In high school, he played safety but I’m not sure he can do that in college. He split time between LB and as an edge rusher this year, mainly the latter. He played a LOT as a true freshman which is both an indictment on how bad IU is and how good he is. I’d say an edge rusher is probably his best fit long-term, but he’s athletic enough that I could see him playing more LB down the road and definitely in passing situations. He can get into the backfield and disrupt plays and pressure the QB. Really a special talent that is going to make an impact right away anywhere. – Rude, Locked On Hoosiers

Here’s the full episode from six months ago, where Rude and Garcia also discuss Daeh McCullough after his decommitment from the Hoosiers.

After a disappointing season, the Oklahoma Sooners need to significantly improve their pass rush. [autotag]Ethan Downs[/autotag] had a nice close to the season after [autotag]Reggie Grimes[/autotag] started fast but couldn’t keep the momentum. [autotag]R Mason Thomas[/autotag] flashed some and was one of the bright spots from the 2022 recruiting class, but Oklahoma could use some help generating pressure off the edge. If it can land Dasan McCullough, that would go a long way toward helping the pass rush in 2023 and beyond.

Sooners receive crystal ball to land former TE Austin Stogner via the transfer portal

On the first day of transfer portal season, OUInsiders at 247Sports Brandon Drumm and Parker Thune project Oklahoma to land former Sooners TE Austin Stogner. From @john9williams

When the coaching change happened a year ago, it was understandable that players would want to seek out new opportunities. [autotag]Spencer Rattler[/autotag] went to South Carolina, and so did [autotag]Austin Stogner[/autotag], reuniting with former assistant Shane Beamer.

Well, after a year in Columbia that didn’t result in big production, Austin Stogner is back in the transfer portal, and a return to Norman might be in his future.

On the first official day of the transfer portal, Brandon Drumm and Parker Thune of OUInsider at 247Sports submitted crystal ball predictions favoring the Sooners bringing back their former tight end.

In three seasons in Norman, Stogner put up 47 receptions on 71 targets for 654 yards and eight touchdowns. In his lone season with South Carolina, the former four-star tight end caught 20 passes for 210 yards and a touchdown. Stogner led Gamecocks’ tight ends in snaps and split receiving work with Jaheim Bell.

It’s clear Stogner’s relationship with Sooners’ tight ends coach Joe Jon Finley is a strong one, leaving the door open for a possible return.

With [autotag]Brayden Willis[/autotag] presumably off to the NFL after the Cheez-It Bowl, the Oklahoma Sooners are left with [autotag]Jason Llewellyn[/autotag] and [autotag]Kaden Helms[/autotag] at the position. Both are highly thought of players but didn’t see much work in 2022, so adding Stogner provides a solid floor at the position if neither of your 2022 four-star tight ends emerges to take on a significant role in 2023.

Stogner and Willis were a part of the H-Back/Tight End rotation with Jeremiah Hall and saw limited opportunities to make an impact as receivers. Out of the rotation, Willis had a breakout season in 2022, leading Oklahoma in touchdown receptions. Could Stogner experience a similar breakout in a return to Oklahoma?

Oklahoma freshman quarterback Nick Evers enters the transfer portal

Former four-star quarterback Nick Evers is entering the transfer portal. From @john9williams

With the opening of the transfer portal coming on Monday, Oklahoma’s logjam at quarterback for 2023 has begun to see some clarity. Last night [autotag]Ralph Rucker[/autotag] made his portal intentions known, and now, freshman quarterback [autotag]Nick Evers[/autotag] announced that he will enter the portal as well.

With the expectation that [autotag]Dillon Gabriel[/autotag] will return to Norman and five-star [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag] coming to Norman in 2023, snaps were going to be harder to come by for the 2022 four-star quarterback. Evers saw limited action at the end of the Sooners’ 49-0 loss to Texas in the Red River Showdown.

Evers, who was initially committed to Florida, became a priority for Jeff Lebby after his arrival to Norman. Evers committed shortly after Lebby’s in-home visit and became an integral part of the 2022 recruiting class rebuild.

After the Spring game, however, Oklahoma made moves to add Davis Beville and General Booty to the quarterback ranks, hoping to add more experience to the depth chart.

Evers held notable offers from Auburn, Colorado, Cincinnati, Houston, Iowa, Kansas, Louisville, Ole Miss, Penn State, TCU, Texas Tech, Tulsa, and Virginia Tech.

With Dillon Gabriel and Davis Beville the only quarterbacks with FBS experience on the roster, the Sooners may look to add another quarterback with snaps at the collegiate level under their belt in addition to five-star quarterback Jackson Arnold in the 2023 recruiting class.

Oklahoma’s Kendall Dennis to enter the transfer portal

Oklahoma Sooners defensive back Kendall Dennis announced he will enter the transfer portal. From @john9williams

Oklahoma’s secondary has now lost its third player to the transfer portal as former four-star defensive back Kendall Dennis announced via social media that he intends to enter the portal when it opens up on Dec. 5.

Dennis, a redshirt sophomore, played 47 snaps in seven games this season. He recorded four total tackles.

Originally a member of the 2020 recruiting class, Dennis was the No. 23 cornerback in the country and the No. 56 in the state of Florida.

Though Oklahoma had some injury issues in the secondary this season, Dennis struggled to breakthrough for significant playing time. He finished behind true freshman Gentry Williams in defensive snaps and incoming transfer C.J. Coldon, who assumed a starting role later in the season.

At the moment there have been no decisions made by Woodi Washington or C.J. Coldon as to their future. They could decide to turn pro and go to the NFL, but a return seems more likely in an attempt to improve their value ahead of the 2024 NFL draft.

The Sooners have added JUCO transfer Kendell Dolby to the roster for 2023, which should help ease the blow of the defensive back departures, but it will be upon Robert Spears-Jennings and Gentry Williams to step into important pieces on the depth chart.
