After being ‘salty’ at UFC, Chris Wade sees PFL final as redemption: ‘It’s meant to be’

After years in MMA, Chris Wade feels it’s destiny to be in the PFL final fighting for $1 million and a championship belt.

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – [autotag]Chris Wade[/autotag] is one fight away from being a champion in a major MMA organization and having an extra $1 million in his pocket.

The MMA veteran punched his ticket to the 2021 PFL featherweight final with a dominant win over Bubba Jenkins in the co-main event of Friday’s 2021 PFL Playoffs 3. Wade (20-6) outpointed Jenkins (16-5) in a unanimous decision, winning 30-27, 30-27, and 29-28 on the judges’ scorecards.

2021 PFL Playoffs 3 took place at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. The main card aired on ESPN 2 and ESPN+ with the prelims exclusively on ESPN+.

The former UFC fighter has been fighting for many years to finally get a chance at becoming champion in a major organization. After many ups and downs in his career, Wade feels like it’s all building up for this moment, as he’s set to take on Movlid Khaybulaev on Oct. 27 in the 2021 PFL featherweight final.

“I think this is meant to be,” Wade told MMA Junkie. “I think God has a weird way of working and this is happening for me and not to me.

“I knew in my heart of hearts that it would be Movlid and I because of how tough the Dagestani people are and he’s just a great fighter. But you know what, my teammate and one of my closest friends is Andre Harrison in the sport and he gave Movlid already everything that he could handle. They fought to a draw, so his coach is now my coach, so we also have tape on him too so it’s going to be interesting.”

Wade has been fighting under PFL since the start of the organization and this is the first time he makes it to the final of a season. This is a very special moment of his career, especially after having his UFC career not go as expected.

He went 5-2 under the Las Vegas promotion with losses to tough fighters Rustam Khabilov and Islam Makhachev and still saw his run with the promotion come to an end.

“I spent some time being pretty salty with the UFC,” Wade said. “I was 5-2, I had a few first-round finishes and it was just clear that they were looking for guys that put their feet down and slug it out and hurt each other and knock each other out.

“They don’t want to see all of mixed martial arts. They don’t want to see grapplers, wrestlers. Wrestlers seem to always get the short end of the stick when it comes to that promotion, so I wish them nothing. That’s the truth, they deserve nothing.”

2021 PFL Playoffs 3 results: Movlid Khaybulaev outpoints Brendan Loughnane, advances to final

Movlid Khaybulaev defeats Brendan Loughnane at 2021 PFL Playoffs 3, punching his ticket to the featherweight final.

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – [autotag]Movlid Khaybulaev[/autotag] is one fight away from winning $1 million.

The 30-year-old outpointed [autotag]Brendan Loughnane[/autotag] in the main event of 2021 PFL Playoffs 3. Khaybulaev (18-0-1) took home a split decision victory, winning 30-27, 28-29, and 29-28 on the judges’ scorecards. Khaybulaev is now set to take on Chris Wade, who defeated Bubba Jenkins in the co-main event of the card, at the 2021 PFL Finals on Oct. 27.

The 2021 PFL Playoffs 3 took place at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. The main card aired on ESPN 2 and ESPN+ with the prelims exclusively on ESPN+.

It was a fairly clean and dominant win for Khaybulaev despite the split decision.

In the first round, Khaybulaev completely dominated. He took down Loughnane (21-3) early in the fight and kept him on the ground for the entirety of the round. Loughnane did a good job at avoiding heavy ground-and-pound but was unable to get up or set up any attacks off his back.

The second had more stand-up action. It was a fairly even affair, but halfway through the round, Khaybulaev was once again able to get the fight to the ground. He controlled Loughnane until the bell rang.

The third and final round got briefly shaky for Khaybulaev. The Englishman was able to keep the fight on the feet and even tagged and rocked Khaybulaev with an overhand right. Khaybulaev was on the back foot recovering from the shot and managed to avoid further shots by Loughnane. Khaybulaev took the fight to the ground with about a minute remaining and kept it there.

With the result, Khaybulaev remains unbeaten in his professional MMA career. The Dagestan fighter defeated Lazar Stojadinovic, Lance Palmer, and now Loughnane to get to the 2021 PFL featherweight final.

Meanwhile, Loughnane saw a seven-fight winning streak. He entered the semifinal bout with wins over Sheymon Moraes and Tyler Diamond. His last defeat prior to the Khaybulaev loss was back in 2017 in a split decision loss to UFC veteran Pat Healy.

Cezar Ferreira loses in 13 seconds after apparent injury, immediately accused of ‘dive’ by fellow PFL fighter

According to a fellow UFC alum, Cezar Ferreira entered the PFL Playoffs with a visible injury.

One half of the 2021 PFL Playoffs light heavyweight bracket concluded in unfortunate fashion Friday.

Following a one-hour delay due to the ESPN broadcast of a high school football game, the 2021 PFL Playoffs 3 main card kicked off with UFC alum [autotag]Cezar Ferreira[/autotag] against rising Norwegian [autotag]Marthin Hamlet[/autotag].

On the first kick he threw, Ferreira (14-10) clutched the back of his other leg, and crumpled to the canvas. Injured and on his back, Ferreira covered up as best he could but the fight was waved off by the referee.

A mix of disappointment and excitement, a confused Hamlet (8-2) celebrated with his team before he expressed his lack of pride in the method of his victory.

Shortly after the result was announced in the cage, PFL fighter [autotag]Chris Camozzi[/autotag] accused Ferreira of a dive. Camozzi competed in a prelim showcase matchup earlier on the card when he defeated Cory Hendricks.

“Huh,” Camozzi wrote in a tweet. “That’s a dive by Cezar. I saw him at the weigh-ins, black and purple leg. My coaches saw it too. He showed up for a show paycheck @PFLMMA can’t believe they cleared him to fight.”

Camozzi did not elaborate further.
Regardless of how it played out, Hamlet will move on to compete in the 2021 PFL Playoffs final this October – and if he wins against the winner of Antonio Carlos Junior vs. Emiliano Sordi, will walk home with $1 million.
  • Marthin Hamlet def. Cezar Ferreira via TKO (punches) – Round 1, 0:13
  • Sheymon Moraes def. Lazar Stojadinovic via TKO (punches) – Round 2, 4:45
  • Chris Camozzi def. Cory Hendricks via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)
  • Anthony Dizy def. Jesse Stirn via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
  • Bobby Moffett def. Jason Knight via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
  • Alejandro Flores def. Carl Deaton via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)
  • Brandon Jenkins def. Jacob Kilburn via knockout (flying knee) – Round 1, 2:56

PFL video: Brandon Jenkins bowls over UFC alum Jacob Kilburn with switch flying knee knockout

Nicknamed “The Human Highlight Reel,” Brandon Jenkins proved to be just that in his PFL debut.

[autotag]Brandon Jenkins[/autotag] grinded for eight years on the regional scene, so when he appeared in a major promotion for the first time Friday, he made the most of the opportunity.

In the first fight of 2021 PFL Playoffs 3, Jenkins (15-7) competed in a non-tournament showcase bout against UFC alum Jacob Kilburn (8-5) and scored a switch flying knee knockout at 2:56 of Round 1.

The bout served as the first fight of the preliminary card for the event, which took place at Seminole Hard Rock Casino & Hotel in Hollywood, Fla., and streamed on ESPN+.

“I hope so,” Jenkins said, when asked by post-fight interviewer Sean O’Connell if he thinks he punched his ticket onto the 2022 season roster. “I think I made a good first impression. … He has a nasty three-two. He likes to do a check-hook. What I did was I threw a naked kick. He checked it and then I looked low and I kneed high. I looked low, I threw the same kick, but I switched in the middle and threw the knee. Because he likes to throw the check hook and kind of put his hook behind his bicep.”

With the win, Jenkins, 29, extends his winning streak to three – a stretch of time that also includes a spinning back-elbow knockout in November 2020.  Meanwhile, Kilburn falls to 0-3 in his last three including losses to Austin Lingo and Billy Quarantillo in the UFC.
