Steelers’ Zach Banner says he turned down multi-year contract from team

Zach Benner is betting on himself in 2020.

Despite only being a reserve, there are few members of the Pittsburgh Steelers more universally loved than offensive tackle Zach Banner. Banner found his role last season as the team’s sixth offensive lineman in their run-heavy sets.

Every time the Steelers PA announcer says “No. 72 reporting as eligible” fans go crazy. Banner signed a one-year contract this offseason but according to him he was offered a longer deal and passed on it.

“They wanted me to sign for a couple of years but I just signed for one,” Banner said. “I just did a pancake, no pun intended. That’s when you flip it and you get a whole other side. A whole other opportunity.”

Read into that however you like but the bottom line is Banner is better on himself this season to play well enough to boost his value well past the $1.75 million he’s making this season.

The problem with the strategy is going to come down to playing time. At this point, there is no competition for either starting tackle position on the Steelers. Alejandro Villanueva will start on the left and Matt Feiler goes back to the right side.

6 Steelers reserves who need to step up in 2020

If you are a backup in the NFL you are literally one play away from being a full-time starter. Injuries have become so prevalent in the NFL, there’s no way to hide on a roster if you aren’t ready to play when called upon. The Pittsburgh Steelers are no different and if 2019 taught us anything, you can’t win if your backups aren’t ready to step up.

Here are six Steelers’ backups who need to be ready for this season.

QB | Mason Rudolph

Last season, Rudolph was thrust into the starting lineup when Ben Roethlisberger went down. Rudolph started eight games in 2019, throwing for more than 200 yards in half of them and failing to record a 300-yard passing game. Rudolph now enters his third NFL season still hoping to one day replace Roethlisberger. This offseason is huge in terms of his development.

Speed on offense should be the draft goal for the Steelers

The Steelers must get faster this season.

The NFL is all about trends. Franchise play follow the leader when it comes to what makes for a successful football team and those trends seem to evolve. But there are a couple of tenets which have stood the test of time. One of those is the importance of having lots of speed on the offensive side of the football.

This is an area where the Steelers have fallen short in recent seasons. If you go over the skill position players on the roster currently, there is no player of any significance on the team who scares you with their ability to take a run or a short pass and turn it into a big gain with their speed.

At running back, James Conner, Benny Snell Jr., and Jaylen Samuels are all solid football players with their own unique blend of skills. None of which are game-changing speed. The one back on the roster who has flashed some elite speed is Kerrith Whyte and he’s not a back you build an offense around.

The story is much the same at wide receiver. Like it or not, what Antonio Brown brought in terms of field speed is missed. Diontae Johnson might be the guy but despite his strong rookie campaign, his film isn’t based on raw speed at all.

Having said all that, this draft can fix that. There are several guys at wide receiver and running back Pittsburgh could target to add legitimate speed. I know old-school football fans like to talk about physicality and winning in the trenches. But teams that win have players who use speed to dictate what the other team will do and force them to account for them on every play.

Nothing can change the momentum of a big game like a long run on offense other than a turnover or sack on defense. Pittsburgh already has the later figured out. It’s time to work on the former.

POLL: Who will lead the Steelers in tackles in 2020?

Who will be the top Steelers tackler in 2020?

[jwplayer 6oSqth9F-ThvAeFxT]

In 2019, inside linebacker Devin Bush led the Pittsburgh Steelers with 109 total tackles. Just behind him was safety Terrell Edmunds with 105. The dropoff after these two is significant as defensive tackle Cam Heyward was third on the team with only 83 total tackles.

The turnaround by the Steelers defense was nothing short of remarkable last season. While the offense struggled to get anything going all season, the defense was elite for much of the season. This week we are thinking about top tacklers. Is there anyone on the roster who can top Bush or Edmunds?

[polldaddy poll=10530280]

Bush was a tackling machine despite having his snaps cut in the middle of the season to help keep him from hitting the rookie wall. And honestly, considering how mediocre Edmunds was in terms of splash plays he did find his way to the football. Can you see anyone overtaking either of these guys this season?

Steelers GM Kevin Colbert offers mixed messages about running back position

It doesn’t feel like the Steelers are at all sold on James Conner.

[jwplayer 6oSqth9F-ThvAeFxT]

On a recent conference call, Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert spoke about the state of the Steelers running back position and specifically James Conner. And to be completely honest, it doesn’t dissuade anyone from believing the Steelers plan to add a running back in the draft.

Despite the fact that Colbert said the team anticipates Conner to be prepared for the start of the season but they want to make sure there is competition at the position. You could infer Colbert meant the other top running backs on the roster aren’t enough.

As of now, the most realistic options to supplant Conner are Benny Snell Jr. and Jaylen Samuels. But neither player truly stepped up when Conner went down for injury last season.

The 2020 running back class is solid and there is starting talent to be had in the middle rounds. With Pittsburgh filling most of their primary needs via free agency, don’t be shocked if they don’t look at a running back early if a top prospect falls.

Which player will lead the Steelers in rushing in 2020?

The Steelers must have more consistency from the run game in 2020.

[jwplayer C7QKW4Cy-ThvAeFxT]

Last season, everything that could go wrong, did go wrong for the Pittsburgh Steelers on offense. Lost amidst all the problems at quarterback, injuries at running back further hampered the team’s ability to consistently move the football. Despite missing six games, James Conner led the team in rushing with a lowly 464 rushing yards.

2020 promises a return of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and with him, balance on offense. But which of the team’s primary backs will lead the team on the ground?

[polldaddy poll=10527945]

As much as we love Conner as a person and even a player it’s hard to see him staying healthy enough to be the feature back in this offense. If the Steelers draft a running back early in 2020, they would have an inside track on the starting job but for now, I’m sticking with Benny Snell Jr. ending up on the top of the depth chart.

Oddsmakers generous with Steelers over/under for wins in 2020

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a chance to be an elite team this season.

[jwplayer 6oSqth9F-ThvAeFxT]

Last season, the Pittsburgh Steelers finished 8-8 with a revolving door of disappointment at the quarterback position. So I suppose it shouldn’t come as a surprise the smart folks who make odds are looking for a significant improvement with the return of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger on the horizon.

Bet MGM placed the over/under for wins in Pittsburgh for 2020 at 11. The only team in the NFL with a higher over/under are the Kansas City Chiefs at 11.5. The Steelers had one of the truly elite defenses in the league last season but the offense just couldn’t keep up. Despite some offseason losses, the Steelers are going to be a much more balanced squad with weapons on both sides of the football.

Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger defends his weight, blames the beard

Ben Roethlisberger says he has not gained any weight.

[jwplayer hfNWjZDQ-dH7yyuP5]

In a recent interview with Steelers beat writer Ron Cook, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger addressed a number of issues including his recovery, minicamps and of yes, his supposed weight gain. Roethlisberger offered an update on his weight and a rather clever explanation.

“I’ve heard people say I’m fat, and that just blows my mind. I’m lighter and in better shape, than I was in either of the past two years,” Roethlisberger said. “I haven’t stopped working out. I normally don’t work out in the offseason, but I’ve been doing everything five days a week with my trainer.”

“I guess it’s my beard that makes me look heavier. I must have five pounds in that, I know. But I’m not overweight.”

Roethlisberger took his fitness regimen up two years ago, so it only makes sense he continued it while on IR. Fans of other teams love to take shots at Roethlisberger but even at 38 years old continues to improve and remains one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL.

Top 3 Steelers who need a big comeback in 2020

Pittsburgh needs big bounceback seasons from all three of these guys.

(AP Photo/Ben Margot)

The Pittsburgh Steelers roster in 2020 is going to look very different than the one which failed to make the playoffs in 2019. Free agents will leave and be replaced with cheaper options. Salary cap casualties will be replaced by young guys and the Steelers will get some guys back who were injured in 2019.

Here are the three Steelers due for a big bounceback in 2020.

DL Stephon Tuitt

The forgotten man from last season is Tuitt. He was off to a great start before an injury sent him to the IR and cost him the last 10 games of the year. It was easy to not give Tuitt much thought since the defense stepped up and played so well in his absence. But with Javon Hargrave likely to leave via free agency, Tuitt’s presence will be vital to this team’s success in 2020.

Check out the ultimate highlights from Steelers LB T.J. Watt

These highlights of T.J. Watt will get you ready for the 2020 season.

In 2019, Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt set a new standard for what makes a Steelers outside linebacker. He proved to not only be an elite pass rusher but proved to be able to do a little of everything on the field. Watt had 14.5 sacks, forced eight fumbles, recovered four fumbles had two interceptions and 55 total tackles.

Watt was in the running for Defensive Player of the Year and although he didn’t win it’s hard to argue with his impact on one of the top defenses in the NFL.

The Steelers put together this awesome video highlight reel of Watt from the 2019 season and it might be the best way for Steelers fans to get through the offseason. Check it out below.
