Bengals have been a safer bet against the spread in recent years

The Cincinnati Bengals have been solid against the spread when it comes to NFL odds.

NFL oddsmakers might not give the Cincinnati Bengals a big chance when it comes to win totals in 2020. The Bengals might only be favored in a single game on the schedule, too.

But the Bengals have generally been pretty reliable when it comes to NFL odds and spreads.

Over at ESPN, NFL beat writers converged to list out the five worst teams against the spread during the Super Bowl era — and the Bengals aren’t on the list.

The worst teams? The Cardinals, Raiders, Rams, Buccaneers and Jets. All check in between the .470-.479 range.

During Cincinnati’s two-win season a year ago, the Bengals still went 6-10 against the spread, per Team Rankings. Using data that stretches back to 2003, the Bengals are actually 138-132-9 against the spread, which percentage-wise (51.1) places them 12th overall on a list headed up by New England (59.3).

Granted, if we stretched this out and looped in the 90s and more, Cincinnati’s standing might slip a bit in this department. But it just works to illustrate that the modern Bengals have been a little more reliable than expected from a betting standpoint.

Given the massive roster overhaul this offseason and another year of experience for carryover players and coaches, the Bengals could move back toward hovering around their typical modern average against the spread. Given the week-by-week odds given for 2020, that’s encouraging.

NFL odds say Bengals currently favorite in one game on 2020 schedule

The Cincinnati Bengals will once again play the role of underdog in 2020.

The Cincinnati Bengals don’t have a lot of fans in the NFL odds department.

Oddsmakers dished a rough 2020 over/under on win totals for the Bengals and the full-season spreads aren’t much better.

According to lines provided by Stephen Campbell at Odds Shark, the Bengals are only outright favorites in one game — Week 4, where they are 3.5-point favorites over the visiting Jacksonville Jaguars.

The whole season’s odds are worth a look. But notables include being three-point underdogs against the Los Angeles Chargers at home to start the season, not being the favorite at home against the Cleveland Browns in Week 7, sitting as underdogs against the Washington Redskins in Week 11 and even presiding in a pick ’em in Week 12 against the New York Giants.

Cincinnati is also featured in one of the most lopsided spreads of the season as 14-point underdogs against the Baltimore Ravens at home in Week 5.

These lines are always subject to change and will vary. But it’s clear where oddsmakers place the Bengals coming off a two-win season while starting a rookie passer under center.

For those confident in the team’s chances next year, now is a prime time to back the underdog.

Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals will have to pull off an upset to get the 2020 season and a new era for the franchise started with a win.

According to odds from BetMGM in the wake of Thursday’s schedule release, the Bengals are 3.5-point home underdogs against the visiting Los Angeles Chargers.

The game has the feel of an effective toss-up. Cincinnati sitting as traditional home three-point favorites would’ve made sense considering the Chargers have to make such a long trip.

Regardless, those Chargers are just a season removed from a 12-win campaign after regressing to six last year. They — like the Bengals with Burrow — could be starting a rookie passer with Justin Herbert.

Burrow and a revamped Bengals roster will have to deal with a strong Joey Bosa-led pass-rush right out of the gates, creating an interesting elite-level opposition for a rookie passer to digest early.

We’re still a long way from the week of this one, obviously, so the line can still move. But it only seems fitting a team that has loved the underdog role over the years will start a new era as one yet again.
