2019 LSU still tops list of best CFP champions after Georgia’s title

The Tigers team in 2019 remains the gold standard for College Football Playoff winners.

After the destruction of TCU at the hands of Kirby Smart’s Georgia Bulldogs last night, the question has been brought up, is this Georgia team the best in College Football Playoff history?

Not so fast.

USA TODAY Sports ranked the best CFP champions, and the 2019 LSU Tigers are No. 1 on the list. What [autotag]Joe Burrow[/autotag], [autotag]Justin Jefferson[/autotag] and head coach [autotag]Ed Orgeron[/autotag] did in the 2019 season was remarkable.

They went on the road to Texas and Alabama as well as taking down Georgia in the SEC Championship game before heading into the college football playoffs where they pretty much were able to sleepwalk through the Oklahoma game and then put a beatdown on Trevor Lawrence and Clemson in the title game.

Here is what USA Today had to say about LSU.

At the very least, the 2019 Tigers are at or near the top of the list of the great offenses in FBS history. Behind Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow, who tossed a ridiculous 60 touchdowns, LSU led the nation in scoring (48.4 points per game) and scored at least 36 points in every game but one. The Tigers sealed the deal with the most dominant two-game run of any playoff-era champion: 63-28 against Oklahoma in the semifinals and 42-25 against Clemson for the title.

At least for now, the 2019 LSU team remains the gold standard for CFP champions. We’ll see how long this holds true.

Joe Burrow says he was nearly arrested for iconic cigar celebration after national title

Apparently, the smoking ban at the Superdome is pretty strict…

LSU quarterback [autotag]Joe Burrow[/autotag] had captured the nation’s attention during the 2019 season long before his team captured a national championship.

An unbelievable campaign led to Burrow winning the Heisman Trophy that season, but the moment that may have truly cemented his legacy as “Joe Cool” came after the Tigers had won the national championship game against Clemson.

While a victorious LSU team was celebrating in the locker room, Burrow and several other players lit up a celebratory cigar.

Little did he know, smoking was banned at the Superdome, and things nearly got a bit dicey for the former first overall pick. He recounted the story during a recent appearance on the Full Send Podcast.

“We were going to smoke all the cigars in the locker room. We starting smoking them, and the cops come in,” Burrow said. “I guess you’re not allowed to smoke inside or whatever, and they started trying to arrest people. We’re like, ‘What’s going on? Come on.’”

Burrow clarified that no LSU players were actually arrested, and the police ultimately stood down. But it’s a funny incident that could have marred what was arguably the biggest moment of Burrow’s career.

Hopefully, if Burrow is ever able to win a Super Bowl with the Cincinnati Bengals, he’ll be allowed to enjoy a stogie in peace.

Ranking the top 5 wins from the Ed Orgeron era

Let’s take a look back at some of the biggest moments from Orgeron’s tenure as LSU football prepares to enter a new era.

It came as a surprise to many when LSU decided to part ways with coach Ed Orgeron midway through the 2021 season. The Tigers were less than two years removed from a national title win in 2019 under Oregeron’s guidance, but the pair of seasons that followed proved disappointing, and it was time for athletic director Scott Woodward to shake things up.

With that being said, Orgeron was a memorable coach, and his tenure featured many memorable moments, including the best season in program history.

As we await the first campaign under his replacement, former Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly, it would be fitting to take a look back at the most memorable moments from Orgeron’s time in Baton Rouge. Here are his five best wins, including a pair of honorable mentions.

LSU receives rings for perfect 2019 season

The Tigers finally have the rings to show for their success.

The LSU Tigers had a season to remember in 2019.

Not only did the Tigers go 15-0, win the SEC and quarterback Joe Burrow won the Heisman Trophy, they also stood tall in January as the national champions.

Now, nearly six months after its historic triumph, LSU’s rings have finally arrived.

The Tigers received three rings. One for winning the SEC, a College Football Playoff ring and a national championship ring.

Head coach Ed Orgeron presented his team and staff with the rings on Tuesday night.

He was on ESPN’s Off the Bench on Tuesday morning to discuss the festivities.

“It’s a special night,” Orgeron said. “What a great night for our football team. I am happy for our players and coaches to be able to get this. We will celebrate it, then put it to bed.”

After receiving his rings, cornerbacks coach Corey Raymond took to Twitter to show fans the beautiful new hardware.

The 2019 LSU Tigers will go down as one of the greatest teams in college football history.

Now, they have the rings to prove it.
