WATCH: Making the case for the 1985-86 Boston Celtics as the greatest team all time

Were the 1985-86 Celtics the greatest team ever?

Many NBA teams can claim to being the greatest of all time, but only a handful are taken seriously in such a claim by most, and the 1985-86 Boston Celtics are among the teams with the strongest claims to that title.

With three Hall-of-Famers, small forward Larry Bird, power forward Kevin McHale and center Robert Parish, manning the frontcourt as the original Big Three in their primes with a supporting cast like few title teams had since, it’s no wonder this team’s so highly regarded. It won 67 games on the way to its 16th title, demolishing everything in their path.

If you want the fine-grained detail on why this team has a case as the greatest ever, watch the video embedded below, produced by Clayton Crowley in his “Making the Case” series focused on the 1986 Celtics.

It’s a well-thought-out argument that looks at more than names and win totals, give it a watch and see if you aren’t convinced.

Robert Parish on the Boston Celtics’ only letdown in the 1986 championship

As odd as it sounds, we know it is true after hearing it from one of the key members of the team, Hall of Fame Boston big man Robert Parish.

The 1985-86 Boston Celtics are widely considered to have been one of the best (if not THE best) full-season and playoffs ball clubs to have been assembled in the nearly eight-decade history of the league. And you will find few analysts or fans of the team who would elevate another season’s roster and results above them in the hierarchy of greatest Celtics squads of all time.

But even after having said all of this, there are still some things about that team that members of that historic squad have letdowns to look back on. As odd as it may sound, we know it is true after hearing it from one of the key members of the team, Hall of Fame Boston big man Robert Parish.

Chief broke down the story on a recent episode of the “NBA History and Storytellers” show vial CLNS Media. Check it out below!

Paying tribute to the 1986 Boston Celtics – the beautiful game

Paying tribute to the 1986 Celtics – the beautiful game

The 1986 Boston Celtics are widely considered one of the greatest teams ever assembled in the history of basketball, never mind the NBA. In the 40th season of the storied franchise, the Celtics went 67-15 — the best record in the league — and 40-1 at home on their way to the team’s record 16th title. The crown came one season after Boston lost the NBA Finals to its longtime rivals, the Los Angeles Lakers, for the first time.

Boston’s roster was filled with Hall of Fame players, including Larry Bird, Robert Parish, Kevin McHale, Dennis Johnson and Bill Walton. Even the non-Hall of Famers were an impressive lot that included Danny Ainge, Jerry Sichting, David Thirdkill, Sam Vincent and Rick Carlisle.

The Book of Basketball YouTube channel put together a clip commemorating their greatness we have embedded below.

Take a look at it to get a better idea of why the 1986 title team is so highly regarded.

Or if you already know, to reminisce.

WATCH: Boston legend Larry Bird proves 1986 Celtics were the greatest team of all time

The team that hung Boston’s penultimate banner is widely regarded as among the greatest ever; could they be the best?

Perhaps more than any other topic in history, a veritable sea of ink has been spilled on what player in NBA history is the league’s greatest of all time, but another important such debate is which team was the greatest to ever grace an Association court.

And at or very nearly so the top of any such list is the 1985-86 Boston Celtics. It was a team that featured Celtics legend Larry Bird at the apex of his Hall of Fame career (and a G.O.A.T. candidate himself) along with fellow Hall of Famers Kevin McHale, Robert Parish, Bill Walton, and Dennis Johnson along with Boston greats Danny Ainge, Jerry Sichting, and Scott Wedman.

Along the way, The Hick From French Lick would win his third straight Most Valuable Player award and Walton Sixth Man of the Year among the team’s many accolades and finished with the club winning its 16th title against the Houston Rockets.

In the video embedded above, our friends over at the CLNS Media “NBA History & Legends on CLNS” YouTube channel make the case for the 1986 Celtics being the greatest team of all time.

Check out the clip, and see if you agree.
