The 1-8 Syracuse Orange entered Saturday’s game against N.C. State as 17-point underdogs, but had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds after driving all the way to the Wolfpack’s 7-yard line, down seven.
What followed was one of the ugliest finishes to a football game you’ll ever see.
Syracuse had no timeouts left to work with, but had plenty of time on the clock to use the entire field to try and get into the endzone. On 3rd-and-goal, quarterback Rex Culpepper scrambled backward as he tried to find an open man, and inexplicably took an 11-yard sack instead of simply throwing the ball away. With the clock running and around 10 second remaining when Culpepper got back to his feet, Syracuse had to hurry to get a last-ditch play off, and got lined up with just under two seconds to go.
The snap occurred before time expired – but Culpepper spiked the ball, ending the game on the spot.

That’s a tough way to lose.
