In the face of such a heartbreaking goal that eliminated the USWNT at the 2023 World Cup, there’s only one way to cope: Some humor.
Because the goal that Alyssa Naeher thought she saved in the sudden-death portion of the penalty kick shootout was reviewed and it went in by MILLIMETERS, as VAR showed.
It reminded everyone of that time back in 2017 when the Dallas Cowboys and then-Oakland Raiders were tied and Dallas appeared to get a first down. When the chain gang couldn’t decide if the ball had gotten over the marker, referee Gene Steratore used an index card to measure and saw it was a first down.
Here come the jokes:

Where is Gene Steratore and his index card when you need it? https://t.co/0nFESCDPn2 pic.twitter.com/8HZcTz2Vat

I don’t even think Gene Steratore’s index card fits between the ball and the endline on Sweden’s PK. pic.twitter.com/9Qm21jzLrv
