Super Bowl LV: Colts Wire staff picks and predictions

The staff makes their picks.

Super Bowl LV is finally here as the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be concluded the 2020 campaign with the big matchup at Raymond James Stadium on Sunday.

Though the Indianapolis Colts will be watching from the comfort of their home, all eyes will be on the big game to see who will be hoisting the Lombardi Trophy at the end.

Though we have no skin in the game, the Colts Wire staff made their picks for Super Bowl LV:

Kevin Hickey (@KevinHickey11): Chiefs 30, Bucs 27

Betting against Tom Brady is typically never a wise thing to do and while Brady and the Bucs have what it takes to topple the Chiefs but Patrick Mahomes and the incredibly fast Kansas City offense will come out firing.

The Bucs failed to stop Tyreek Hill in their earlier meeting this season when he went off for 13 receptions, 269 yards and three touchdowns. That won’t happen again, but the Bucs defense — as good as it is — will struggle to stop Hill and tight end Travis Kelce.

It will be a close game and likely to come down to who scores last, but the Chiefs have something special right now as they continue to build a dynasty

Sam Sinclair (@samsinclair96): Chiefs 31, Bucs 27

It’s the game that determines legacies. For one QB, it’s continuing to add to his trophy case, for the other, it’s adding more to his “goat” debate. The Kansas City Chiefs and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will face off Sunday for the Lombardi trophy.

This will be the first time in NFL history that the team hosting the Super Bowl will have its team playing in that game, as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will play a “home” game in the Super Bowl.

These two teams met during the regular season. Tyreke Hill went crazy, over 200 receiving yards in the first quarter, and the Chiefs were up 27-10 at one point before holding on 27-24. Ironically, the last Bucs lost came to these same Kansas City Chiefs.

I wouldn’t take a lot from that regular-season game. Both teams will have two weeks to prepare for each other, and will have seen each other already once. As someone who tries to never bet against Patrick Mahomes, it’s a death wish to bet against Tom Brady in the Super Bowl. Weather will play a factor, but I will take Kansas City in this one.

John Alfieri (@alfierijohn): Chiefs 31, Bucs 17

The absence of Eric Fisher and Willie Gay Jr. would typically, both starting tackles for Kansas City, would be turmoil for any other team. However, the Chiefs have Patrick Mahomes. This offense is one of the best the league has ever seen, and despite going up against a great front seven, they should be able to throw the ball down the field.

This game will likely be close in the first half, and the Buccaneers defense has proven they can disrupt any offense. The Chiefs are excellent at getting the ball out quickly, which is largely due to the speed of their receivers.
The coaching battle on the sidelines will be fun to watch as two experienced head coaches face off in this one. The classic term is “defense wins championships”. In this one, the better offense will prevail.
