Sunday Night Football: 49ers in line to face winner in 1st playoff game

Why Sunday Night Football this week matters for the 49ers.

The 49ers on Saturday could’ve moved up one place in the standings. Alas, the Vikings executed the greatest comeback in NFL history, rallying from a 33-0 deficit against the Colts to win 39-36 in overtime. That moved Minnesota to 11-3 and kept them in the No. 2 seed with the 49ers a game back at 10-4.

Heading into Sunday night, the 49ers are slated to face the No. 6 seed Washington Commanders in the first round. That’s also the team they’ll host in Week 16. Sunday Night Football could change that matchup though.

Washington will play the New York Giants on Sunday night. Both teams are 7-5-1, but the Commanders sit ahead of the No. 7-seed Giants thanks to the conference record tiebreaker.

The winner Sunday night will grab hold of the No. 6 seed and put themselves further from the pack of teams vying for the final playoff spot. That team will also be slated to head to Levi’s Stadium on Wild Card Weekend.

The loser Sunday night will be on the brink of falling out of the playoff race.
