Steven Sims was undeniably one of the biggest surprises for the Washington Redskins in 2019, as he came into the league as an undrafted free agent out of Kansas and eventually turned into a dynamic offensive player who was highly capable of putting points on the board.
Although he was one of the last players to make the roster cut before the season, his early success in the kick-return game earned him a role in the offense. Once entrenched there, he turned around and racked up 20 catches for 230 yards and four touchdowns in the final four weeks of the season.
How he was able to do that, you ask? It was a special connection with quarterback Dwayne Haskins that he picked up while living with him through the early parts of the season.
“Just a lot with the connection me and Dwayne have,” Sims said recently in an interview with The Washington Post. “We built it early in the season, from the day I got there to living in his house. It worked out perfectly. I didn’t have a home in Virginia as soon as we got back from [training camp in Richmond]. When we came back to Ashburn, we had a few weeks before camp was over, so I stayed with Dwayne for around a month.”
It’s apparent that the extended sleepover paid dividends for both Haskins and Sims, as they were able to eventually find their grooves down the stretch of the season. Now, going into their sophomore seasons in the NFL, a bigger role will be carved out for both of them in Scott Turner’s offense, and each will have a greater chance to make their mark on the league.
