Steve Kerr: ‘We’ll be good soldiers if the league asks us to play more games’

If the league asks the Warriors to return for their final 17 games of the season, Steve Kerr says they’ll be ready.

It’s officially been over two months since the Golden State Warriors played a basketball game. With 17 contests remaining, the Warriors’ season was put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic.

During the stretch run, many teams around the association are fighting for their spot in the playoff picture. Yet, the Warriors sit in a different position.

Golden State’s league-worst 15-50 record has already decided their playoff fate. Prior to the NBA stopping play, the Warriors became the first team in the league to be eliminated from playoff contention.

In an interview with Damon Bruce, Matt Kolsky and Ray Ratto on 95.7 The Game in San Francisco, Steve Kerr said he doesn’t anticipate the league asking the Warriors to play more games this season. However, if the league calls, they’ll be ready.

Via Damon, Ratto and Kolsky on 95.7 The Game:

I am just basically in the background. Because of our team’s circumstances, because of the fact that we are not in the mix at all — I’m really staying out of all of this. As Bob [Myers] said, we will be good soldiers if the league asks us to play more games, we’ll play. I don’t anticipate that happening, but we’ll be ready if it does, and in the meantime, it’s not my decision. It’s not our decision; it’s the NBA’s decision. What to do when to do it. Joe Lacob is part of that decision-making process, so I get information from Joe and from Bob, and in the meantime, I’m just biding my time, just waiting.

Although the Warriors have little to play for in their remaining 17 games, fans of Golden State could get a sneak peek of what next season will look like in the Bay Area.

A healthy Stephen Curry will get reintroduced to the new Golden State lineup that features Andrew Wiggins. Since being traded to the Warriors, Wiggins and Curry have only played one game together.

Golden State’s younger players like Eric Paschall and Marquese Chriss could also benefit from getting run with the two-time Most Valuable Player before the offseason.

If the Warriors aren’t asked to finish out the year, Kerr and Bob Myers will have an early start on a crucial offseason that includes a high lottery draft pick.
