Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr on Monday explained how the organization could potentially utilize rookies Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody in the NBA G League this season.
Kuminga recently missed an extended period of time after recovering from a knee injury suffered in the preseason. He was cleared last week to play with the Warriors, and debuted with the team on Saturday in a win over the Oklahoma City Thunder. He scored three points in six minutes.
Meanwhile, Moody has played sparingly to begin the season, logging only four appearances. He had the opportunity to play with the Santa Cruz Warriors on Friday, producing 17 points, four assists, three steals and two rebounds.
Kerr said the two players would likely spend time with Santa Cruz throughout the season, and detailed when they could potentially suit up in the G League.
There will be plenty of nights where we’re off and in town in the Bay, and Santa Cruz has a game, and there will be plenty of nights where our young guys will go down and play.
The Warriors will consider all of their options when it comes to getting playing time for Kuminga and Moody. Teams often don’t practice nearly as often or as extensively as they did in training camp, meaning Kuminga and Moody could scrimmage some with Santa Cruz.
Kerr expressed the importance of getting Kuminga more reps.
He needs to scrimmage badly. He is a young guy, who just missed three weeks of training camp. It is not ideal so he needs to play. He scrimmaged today. He was really good — his physicality, length, speed. It’s all really prominent, especially on the defensive end. It’s all really impressive. He needs to play and needs as many reps as possible so we’ll be giving him those reps in practice any time we scrimmage or post-practice with the other guys.
The organization is certainly high on Kuminga and Moody as they can eventually develop into rotation players. They have impressed during their short time with the team and project to be a big part of the future with the Warriors.
