With the New England Patriots signing top-level players to big deals in free agency this season, one player still remains unsigned. Cornerback Stephon Gilmore is still looking for a new contract.
Set to make $7 million in 2021, that would be a meager salary for the 2019 Defensive Player of the Year. The Patriots have two options here. They could either sign him to a contract extension, or trade him away.
For his part, Gilmore is happy to be a Patriot, and is taking things as they come. The cornerback position is loaded with talent for the Patriots and should figure to be one of the strongest units on the team heading into 2021.
As he told Ben Volin of the Boston Globe earlier this week, he is just going to let things play out.
“That stuff will play out as it will,” he said. “I just try to take it day by day, and that’s all I can do.”
As it stands right now, he is just focused on a current member of the Patriots.
“It’s out of my control,” he said. “I’m just happy to be a Patriot right now, and see how it goes.”
As the offseason continues, this is certainly going to be one of the bigger storylines over the next couple of weeks. It will be interesting to see how this will play out.
