Stephen A. Smith: Chris Paul doesn’t want to join the Lakers

Joining the Los Angeles Lakers felt like empty ring-chasing to Chris Paul, according to ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith.

Basically ever since the season ended, people have been wondering what the Los Angeles Lakers will do to improve their roster and in particular, the point guard spot. Rajon Rondo was amazing for the Lakers in the postseason but that play may merit a raise in the open market, with many wondering about LeBron’s friend Chris Paul in Oklahoma City. But as Paul is the centerpiece of ongoing trade discussions with the Phoenix Suns, it’s become known that Paul never wanted to be a part of the Lakers, particularly after the Lakers won the championship this season.

According to ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith on the Wednesday edition of First Take, Paul never wanted to join the Lakers because it would feel like empty ring chasing. As Smith said, the Lakers would “being doing something for him, he wouldn’t do anything for them,” which turned Paul off on the idea of joining the Lake Show.

Paul and James are of course still great friends but Paul has always relished the role of being a leader. If he ends up in Phoenix with a young group of players, he can still do that while being a competitive team in the West.
