The Pittsburgh Steelers have an open roster spot after releasing cornerback Kalon Barnes, and it could be filled by a former Baltimore Ravens receiver. Per the NFL transactions wire, the Steelers worked out James Proche, a 2020 sixth-round selection by the Ravens.
With 202 receiving yards, 2021 was Proche’s best season in the league. Overall, he played in 43 games with 278 yards on 25 receptions.
In what was once a pretty deep receiver room, Diontae Johnson (hamstring) is out (at least) until after the team’s Week 6 bye. Gunner Olszewski was out last week with a concussion, but he wasn’t playing well in the limited snaps he was given.
Though his past numbers are nothing to write home about, what could be attractive to the Steelers is Proche’s experience as a punt and kick returner (244 yards on 29 returns).
