One of the more underrated Pittsburgh Steelers from 2022 was backup tight end Zach Gentry. As the run game improved in the second half of the season, Gentry’s ability to block was a big part of that. Gentry is also a free agent this offseason and is optimistic he will re-sign with Pittsburgh.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if Pittsburgh didn’t do the necessary things to keep me here,” Gentry said.
Last season, Gentry only caught 19 passes for 132 yards but again, his value isn’t as a receiver. His $716,115 salary in 2022 was the final year of his rookie contract. Signing Gentry back shouldn’t be a big strain on the salary cap and with Connor Heyward showing off impressive receiving skills, which could push down Gentry’s value. Either way, it would be great for the sake of consistency to see Gentry back but there’s no way Pittsburgh is going to overpay.
