After getting no solid offers in free agency, quarterback Mitch Trubisky chose to return to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Unless Mason Rudolph somehow passes him on the depth chart, Trubisky will be Kenny Pickett’s backup this season.

After the team’s first practice of OTAs, Trubisky talked about what made him choose to return to the Steelers and he noted how important his relationship with Pickett was in his decision.

“I just want to come back because me and Kenny have gotten so close,” Trubisky said. “I want to help him in any way I can. Anything I can be for Kenny-a sounding board, an extra coach, extra eyes on the field. I will be there for him and he knows that.”

Having said that, it’s pretty clear Trubisky still hasn’t closed the door on being a starting quarterback in the NFL.

“Still a competitor, the right situations will come if you do the right things and work hard,” Trubisky said. “I know my role and am embracing it.”

Getting a player the caliber of Trubisky to be the backup is huge for an up-and-coming offense like Pittsburgh’s. The future is what it is but for now, it’s great to hear Trubisky is motivated to help the team however he can.
