Steelers promote Denzel Martin to OLB coach

Pittsburgh found its new outside linebackers coach from within.

On Monday, the Pittsburgh Steelers announced a pair of coaching moves. First, the team hired former Baltimore Ravens assistant Jason Brooks to be the defensive quality control coach. The team also announced they are promoting assistant outside linebackers coach Denzel Martin to outside linebackers coach.

Martin has been with the Steelers since 2016. He spent two years as a scouting assistant before spending the next two as a coaching assistant before becoming the assistant outside linebackers coach in 2020.

It’s hard to know just how much influence Martin has had on the development of the outside linebackers since 2020 so this is a move we put in the hands of the Steelers that they are making the right decision. Last season the Steelers saw its sack numbers nosedive due in large part to T.J. Watt being on IR for seven games. Martin has to find ways for whoever else is on the edge depth chart to be ready to play.
