Steelers looking to 2021 with cornerback combine interviews

Pittsburgh is scouting cornerbacks heavily at the combine.

It might come as something of a surprise to hear the Pittsburgh Steelers are dedicating significant time and energy to the cornerback position at the NFL Scouting Combine. The Steelers have been making the rounds, hitting many of the team’s primary NFL draft needs but as fans, we don’t always see the big picture the Steelers front office is staring at.

Here are the cornerbacks the Steelers have met with so far.

Cameron Dantzler, Mississippi State

Jaylon Johnson, Utah

Amik Robertson, Louisiana Tech

If you just look at the Steelers cornerback depth chart at its surface these might feel like wasted visits. Joe Haden and Steven Nelson form of the best starting tandems in the NFL. Behind them Mike Hilton is one of the top slot cornerbacks in the league with Cam Sutton and Justin Layne right behind them.

But when you dig in a little you find Hilton is a restricted free agent and Haden is entering the final year of his contract. Sutton will be a 2021 free agent as well. With Artie Burns not returning, it makes sense the Steelers will want to bolster this depth chart in case one or more of those three don’t return.
