In 2019, the Pittsburgh Steelers made a big trade to go up and get linebacker Devin Bush. His rookie season was a rousing success and he appears to be poised for greatness in the NFL. But this didn’t stop Bleacher Report from giving the Steelers another off-ball linebacker in their new 2021 NFL mock draft.
They have the Steelers selecting Alabama linebacker Dylan Moses with the No. 23 overall pick. Moses is an athletic linebacker with impressive instincts and range. He’s a tackling machine and the Crimson Tide move him around a lot in their base 3-4 defense to maximize his versatility. Moses is coming off a torn ACL that cost him his 2019 season.
But with the sheer volume of sub-package defense the Steelers play, adding a guy to line up next to Bush seems redundant. Vince Williams is an excellent player next to Bush as a run defender and is grossly underrated as a pass rusher.
Perhaps the point was to draft Moses and move him outside. That’s plausible but the Steelers already have Alex Highsmith and Ola Adeniyi as depth. Moses’ future in the NFL is in a 4-3 defense where he can roam that second level. There are several players taken after Moses that would fit the Steelers long-term needs much better.
