Steelers HC Mike Tomlin sells idea of packages for QB Justin Fields

Is Mike Tomlin bluffing about Justin Fields?

When Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the media on Wednesday, reporters didn’t even have to ask about quarterback Justin Fields. No sooner had Tomlin announced that Russell Wilson would be the team’s starting quarterback against the Atlanta Falcons than he turned to Fields.

Without any prompting or prodding, Tomlin let Falcons head coach Raheem Morris be on the lookout for Fields.

“My friend Raheem Morris better be ready for a Justin Fields package… there’s too much talent to be sitting around watching,” Tomlin said. He noted that he was open to “weaponizing” Fields’ athleticism.

Putting this out there unprompted feels like a setup. Going public like this will force Morris to take time in preparation for a potential Fields package that would include him as a runner or thrower.

This doesn’t even factor in how much Fields would even want this. He came to the Steelers to be the starter but there’s no doubt whatever Tomlin told him was nonsense because there was never a competition between him and Russell Wilson, which is unfortunate.
