Steelers HC Mike Tomlin excited about adding TE Darnell Washington

Darnell Washington showed he can be a punishing blocker for the Steelers run game.

Most NFL draft pundits believe the Pittsburgh Steelers got a bargain when they drafted tight end Darnell Washington in the third round. Washington came into the league with a reputation as a punishing run blocker but very much a raw route runner and receiver.

Head coach Mike Tomlin talked about Washington and seemed excited about the prospect of having Washington on the field as more than just a sixth offensive lineman.

“He physically looks like he has an appetite and an attitude for blocking,” Tomlin said. “So, I’m looking forward to him being a big-time help for us. And really, he’s been better in the passing game through this process maybe than we anticipated, which is also a plus.”

In the preseason, Washington didn’t get many opportunities as a pass catcher but he did make several crushing blocks. Pittsburgh has a group of excellent running backs and want to establish the run. Depending on what happens with tight end Zach Gentry, Washington could play a major part in the Steelers offense, especially if he can find his way into the passing game.
