On Tuesday, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin had his end of the season press conference. The team had hoped to delay this one a bit longer but a blowout loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the first round of the playoffs sent the Steelers into the offseason.
During the press conference, Tomlin confirmed the rumor that defensive coordinator Keith Butler is planning to retire.
The most likely replacement for Butler is already on the staff in defensive assistant coach Teryl Austin. We didn’t say best option, just the betting favorite to get the job.
Truth be told, no matter who is named defensive coordinator, Tomlin is going to be the guy who makes the final decisions about that side of the football. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Depends on your perspective I suppose. Nevertheless, Butler’s time with the team, which started back in 2003 when he was hired to coach the linebackers is coming to an end.
