The NFL released a memo on Wednesday announcing a new International Home Market initiative. For the Pittsburgh Steelers, this means they have been granted Mexico as an international market for things like marketing and commercialization.

Here is an excerpt from the release explaining the program:

Under the leadership of the International Committee, the NFL announced today that 18 teams have been granted access to 26 International Home Marketing Areas (IHMA) across eight different countries. This ground-breaking, new initiative grants clubs access to international territories for marketing, fan engagement and commercialization as part of an important, longterm, strategic effort to enable clubs to build their global brands while driving NFL fan growth internationally.

Choosing Mexico for the Steelers makes perfect sense. Pittsburgh has a massive following south of the border and scores of diehard fans. It might have been better to allow the Steelers access to a different part of the world to help expand its reach even more but adding to the team’s scope in Mexico is a no-brainer.
