On Tuesday, the Pittsburgh Steelers formally announced the team had re-signed backup tight end Zach Gentry to a one-year contract.
Gentry was the team’s primary reserve in 2022, often being on the field at the same time as starter Pat Freiermuth. Gentry’s ability as a run blocker put the Steelers in a position to utilize more two tight end sets last season.
In 2022, Gentry only caught 19 passes but his return provides stability at the position. This, coupled with the continued development of Freiermuth and the emergence of Connor Heyward gives Pittsburgh a nice three-headed monster at tight end. Look for Heyward and Gentry to share reps at the team’s No. 2 tight end with Gentry being less of a receiving threat.
