Texas A&M star point guard Wade Taylor IV is already one of the best players to ever come through the program, as the senior opted to return for a final season to help lead the Aggies to the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive season.
Taylor and coach Buzz Williams understood the implications of a high-scoring season. As the senior began the year as the third-ranked all-time scorer, he aimed to surpass Vernon Smith and Bernard King to reach the pinnacle. After 12 games, Taylor is closer to clinching No. 1.
After missing his first Texas A&M game against Houston Christian due to a groin injury, Taylor returned during Saturday’s final nonconference game vs. Abilene Christian, leading the Aggies with 15 points and a career-high 10 assists.
With that scoring output, Taylor moved past Vernon Smith for second place with 1,779 points in the all-time scoring list and is only 212 points away from passing Bernard King for the top spot.
For Taylor to pass King, he will need to average almost 12 points a game over the next 18 regular season games, which is more than doable for one of the top-scoring guards in the country.
Texas A&M will host rival Texas on Saturday, Jan. 4 at 7:00 p.m. CT. The game will air on the SEC Network.
Wade Taylor IV officially passes Vernon Smith for second place on the all time scoring list at Texas A&M!
He’s now just 212 points away from passing Bernard King to be A&M’s all time leading scorer.
