Stanford A Decade Long House of Horrors for Notre Dame

There haven’t been many more painful losses in Brian Kelly’s now ten-year run than what happened to conclude the 2015 regular season.

Forget that.

There haven’t been many more painful losses for Notre Dame in the almost 30 years I’ve been watching as the regular season finale in 2015 was.

2017: No. 21 Stanford 38, No. 8 Notre Dame 20

Looking back at this score it’s hard to remember that this Notre Dame team had a lead entering the fourth quarter and appeared headed to a New Year’s Six Bowl despite being embarrassed at Miami earlier that November.

On the third play of the final quarter and facing a third-and-eight, KJ Costello found Kaden Smith for a 19 yard touchdown pass to put Stanford in front, 24-20.

Brandon Wimbush was then intercepted on the first play of the following drive by Curtis Robinson, as Stanford started inside the Irish 30 before pushing their lead to 11 just three plays later.

CJ Sanders then fumbled the ensuing kickoff as Stanford recovered at the Notre Dame 18, before scoring four plays later.

After entering the final frame up 20-17, the Irish trailed 38-20 less than five minutes later.

Instead of the NY6 Bowl Game the Irish would end up in the Citrus Bowl where they’d upset LSU.

Stanford would lose the Pac-12 Championship a week later against USC before being sent to the Alamo Bowl where they’d fall to TCU.

Here’s to hoping Brian Kelly gets his first win at Stanford on Saturday and that we’re not adding another game to this unfortunate list in a few short days.
