St. John’s at Seton Hall: Three things to know
- St. John’s squeaked past Rider as 18.5-point favorites Tuesday with an 82-79 win. The Red Storm’s keys to the victory were their ability to control the glass—out-rebounding Rider 41-30—and quality performances from wings Julian Champagnie and Vince Cole.
- Seton Hall won its second straight by rolling Wagner 78-45 Tuesday. The Pirates defense smothered the Seahawks, holding them to 27% field-goal shooting and 15% (3-for-20) from behind the arc.
- Both were scheduled to play other Big East teams but COVID-19 forced those opponents to pause basketball activities. This is the second year on the job for St. John’s head coach Mike Anderson and the Red Storm lost both meetings with Seton Hall last season. They covered once against the Pirates.

St. John’s at Seton Hall: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks
Prediction
St. John’s 78, Seton Hall 75
Money line (ML)
What St. John’s is missing in experience and size it can make up with pressuring the ball handler and getting out in transition. The Red Storm is sixth in the nation in steals per game and 10th in adjusted tempo.
Also, St. John’s moves the ball a lot more, averaging 18.5 assists per game (31st in the country) compared to Seton Hall’s 14 assists per game (151st). Ball pressure and tempo can minimize the Pirates’ size advantage.
I lean ST. JOHN’S (+170) for a quarter-unit to maximize value because I am going to hit the spread harder.
Against the spread (ATS)
Money is flooding in on the Red Storm with 86% of the money wagered and 63% of the bets placed on St. John’s, according to Pregame.com. It has moved the line from the 7-point opener to 4.5 points.
The percentage of money wagered on St. John’s is key because that’s typically considered the sharp side of the market. The Red Storm’s swarming defense can always flip the momentum in the game and help them sneak in the backdoor if need be.
GIMME ST. JOHN’S +4.5 (-110) for 1 unit.
Over/Under (O/U)
St. John’s and Seton Hall have a combined 9-3 O/U record this year because both teams have issues defensively. The Red Storm are great at creating turnovers but are 286th in opponents’ effective field-goal percentage but the Pirates are ranked below St. John’s in defensive efficiency.
I lean Under 150 (-110) for a half-unit.
