Square Enix is shuttering the Final Fantasy battle royale already

Square Enix will shut down Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier in 2023 and the battle royale’s sunsetting process has already begun

Square Enix launched Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier, its first foray into the mobile battle royale genre, as part of its celebration of the classic RPG, but now, less than a year after the game launched, the Tokyo-based publisher announced The First Soldier’s servers are closing down soon.

“Despite all our efforts to bring you regular updates with fresh and exciting content, we haven’t been able to deliver the experience that we were hoping to and that you all deserve, so we have made the extremely tough decision to end service for Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier,” Square Enix said in the announcement.

Square Enix will keep the game running until Jan. 11, 2023, but the sunsetting process has already begun.

As of Oct. 12, 2022, players can no longer purchase Shinra Credits, The First Soldier’s currency, from the in-game store, though they can spend any Credits they currently own, assuming they have enough to buy something from the shop.

Support for languages other than English will end on Nov. 1, 2022, after which point the game will only display text in English. Square Enix said it will continue providing updates, including to events, up until the servers close.

The First Soldier may be winding down, but there’s still plenty more Final Fantasy 7 on the way. Aside from Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the sequel to Remake, Final Fantasy 7 Ever Crisis – the mobile reimagining of the original game and its sequels, is still floating somewhere in the lifestream, and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion is launching Dec. 13, 2022, for all modern platforms.
