The San Antonio Spurs have dominated headlines for the past few months, and it’s all been because of one player – Victor Wembanyama. They won the 2023 NBA Draft Lottery, which gave them the right to pick Wembanyama with the first pick in the draft. He’s the most hyped-up prospect since LeBron James.
With all of the hype around him, Wembanyama has a ton of pressure on him, but in his two Summer League appearances, the talent was evident. And as he’s been so popular among media and fans, there have been plenty of player comparisons thrown his way, and most are incredibly flattering.
According to an Eastern Conference GM who spoke with Ric Bucher of Fox Sports, Wembanyama is more like Anthony Davis than Kevin Durant, who he is commonly compared to due to his skinny frame.
“Wemby is right where I expected him to be,” said the GM. “His offensive game is closer to Anthony Davis than Kevin Durant right now, and I don’t know if people who only saw highlights knew that. But his defensively ability is quite high already, and will be where he brings most of his value his first year.”
Obviously, saying a player could be like Davis or Durant is putting a ton of pressure on them. At his peak, Davis was one of the best defensive players in the world, and Durant is a two-time NBA Champion.
The Spurs should be encouraging and supporting Wembanyama on his pathway to becoming his own player, but it is incredible to see how many comparisons are being thrown at him.
