Spurs teammates know Victor Wembanyama is unphased by media attention: ‘They know I don’t care about it’

San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama doesn’t let the outside noise affect him.

One year ago, the San Antonio Spurs were entering the season with low expectations. Fresh off the Dejounte Murray trade, they were projected to be one of the worst teams in the NBA, and they met those standards. Luckily for them, their failure was met with massive success, as they won the NBA Draft Lottery, paving the way for them to select Victor Wembanyama.

And with the entrance of Wembanyama into the picture, the Spurs are set to have a lot more attention on them. At Spurs Media Day, the attendance was much higher than last season, and it’s all because of the rookie.

That said, the outside noise doesn’t affect him, and he doesn’t anticipate it affecting his teammates, either. (H/t Andrew Lopez of ESPN)

“They know I don’t care about it,” Wembanyama said. “I’m here to make sacrifices for them and I think when it’s needed, they’re also going to make sacrifices for me. And they know it’s different. They know it’s going to happen. Of course, there’s going to be a lot of attention, but it’s at the end of the day when everything is done and we’re at practice and I’m like, ‘Yeah, OK, what do we do to get this thing better?’ So it’s really stuff we don’t care about. It’s basketball first.”

Not only is Wembnyama a freak in terms of his overall build, standing at 7-foot-5 with an eight-foot wingspan, but his pure talent alone will be enough to lead the Spurs for years to come.
