Over the years, plenty of stars have called the San Antonio Spurs home, but almost all of them were drafted by the team. David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili are all Hall-of-Famers who played in San Antonio, but the Spurs drafted all of them. They haven’t attracted many star free agents.
However, amid the recent drama surrounding Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future with the Milwaukee Bucks, the Spurs have been mentioned as a potential landing place. When discussing teams that could make a run at Antetokounmpo after his current contract is up, Sean Deveney of Heavy Sports brought up the Spurs.
He said the Spurs are one of two “darkhorses” to land Antetokounmpo.
“Two other darkhorses are out there, too: San Antonio and Toronto,” Deveney wrote. “The Spurs are not on the Thunder’s level, asset-wise, but they are loaded with cap space and could be a threat to sign Antetokounmpo if rookie big man Victor Wembanyama lives up to his hype. They could likely package enough picks and young players to give Milwaukee a trade package at least worth considering.”
Pairing Antetokounmpo with Victor Wembanyama is quite an intriguing idea, as the height and defensive potential would create major problems for opponents.
Obviously, the Spurs won’t be able to make a run at Antetokounmpo for few seasons, as he’s still under contract. However, the fact that the Spurs have even been mentioned as a potential destination is interesting.
Would you like to see Antetokounmpo in a Spurs uniform at some point in the future?
