The San Antonio Spurs are going to be the center of attention in the NBA for years to come, as they picked Victor Wembanyama with the first pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. The 19-year-old Frenchman is a generational talent with all the media training and charisma to be a star off the court as well.

Wembanyama has the skills and ceiling to lead the Spurs into the next decade of basketball, and though he hasn’t even appeared in an NBA game yet, fans are already envisioning banners. One former Spur is even excited to welcome the youngster into the San Antonio family.

Mike Taylor of Inside the Spurs recently spoke with Johnny Moore, who is absolutely “fired up” for Wembanyama.

“Anyhow, the old legend lit up when I asked him about Victor Wembanyama,” Taylor wrote. “He’s as fired up about Wemby as any local and can’t wait to use his freebie tickets this season to see the kid play in person. When your number is retired you get to go to the games for free, whether you have an actual seat or not. They will find you one.

Among the things we discussed was how polished Wembanyama is. He already understands the nuances of the game, something many American college kids or draft picks from alternative leagues in the states lack. This wasn’t just two old guys pretending that everything from back in the day was better.”

If Moore – whose #00 is in the rafters at AT&T Center – is this excited for Wembanyama, than Spurs fans should be, too.
